There are no steam trains released yet in TSW.

Don’t worry we are all going to find driving a steam locomotive in TSW2 a new learning experience. On last nights stream Matt showed about six tutorial exercises and also commented on how to drive the train, so watch the stream and play the tutorials in eleven days time.

OP - Assuming you are running TSC, you need to ask the mods to move the thread to the relevant section.
If you're running MSTS, Open Rails, Trainz or Derail Valley then you're in the wrong place altogether.

You also need to be a bit more specific. Which route, which engine, what type of train are you hauling?

If it's a tank engine hauling 8 coaches up a 1 in 50 gradient the 40 MPH is pretty good going.

In any event if you're not getting up to speed there are two main reasons, actually connected. First you may be using more steam than the boiler is generating so eventually pressure will drop to the point at which the pistons in the cylinders won't move. As speed increases you need to wind the cutoff back from the 60 - 75% you start with to around 30 - 40%, then set the regulator for a gentle acceleration or to cruise, without blowing the fire through the stock or having a deficit in steam production (that's okay for a short while e.g. to get over a hill but you need to get positive generation back ASAP).

Finally check you have released the brakes fully.
