Not sure if the theme this week is for locos that are broken down, or locos that weren't successful, but here a test....
    Screenshot_Arizona Divide_35.20460--111.40815_08-26-29.jpg
Built between 1973 and 1974, the EMD SDP40F was the 1st diesel locomotive to be built brand new for Amtrak's fleet. Amtrak ordered 150 of the units, and they were the main power for Amtrak's long distance trains when they arrived on the scene. The days of the SDP40F's were not long on Amtrak, as thru the mid 1970's the locomotives were involved in a string of multiple derailments, and investigations pointed to issues with the locomotive. Starting in 1977, Amtrak moved on from the SDP40F onto the F40PH, trading most of them in for the newer units. A handful of SDP40F found success in freight service however, as Amtrak traded 18 of the units to the Santa Fe railroad for 43 switcher locos. The ATSF modified the units for freight duty (Where they were redesignated as SDF40-2's) and stayed on the roster post the BNSF merger into 2002. Only 1 unit is preserved, Ex Amtrak #644.

Here a trio of SDP40F's lead the Eastbound Southwest Limited east of Flagstaff, Arizona sometime in the mid 1970's.

    Route: Arizona Divide
    Locomotive: EMD SDP40F

Could be either, my main idea was broken down locos but I think unsuccessful designs as well work :)

A pair of Union Pacific locomotives come to the aid of a stalled BNSF train near the summit of Tehachapi Pass, on a summer morning in the mid 2000's. The BNSF train stalled, due to the 4th unit in the consist, a CSX AC6000CW, breaking down. The loss of the 6000hp unit meant the train didn't have sufficient power to make it over the summit.

Situations like this is why the 6000hp prime movers never caught on in the 90's and the 2000's. The loss of such a unit was more devastating on a train vs the lower HP locomotives that are pretty much standard in the modern world. The 6000hp units from both GE and EMD both suffered issues with their units (The AC6000CW and SD90MAC respectively). CSX repowered their AC6000 fleet with 4600hp prime movers, but as 2018, most of these units are now off the roster. With CSX only retaining their 3 pre-production units (600-602).

Route: Tehachapi Pass: Mojave - Bakersfield
    Locomotives: GE AC4400CW, GE AC6000CW, GE C44-9W, EMD SD70M

Stanier Black 5 45183, She might be old, she might be a bit rusty, but at least she still works, which is more than can be said for the gleaming new Class 25 that has had to be rescued after breaking down at Darlington. (Weardale Teesdale Route)

It's January, 1958 and winter has not at all been kind to the UP. An FEF-3 is seen rescuing a quartet of F7's on a mixed freight, after parts of their engines froze over while waiting at a signal the previous night. The train is to be taken to Evanston, where a fresh set of engines will take the train the rest of the way to its scheduled destination.
Route Used: Union Pacific's Wasatch Grade
Locomotives Used: Union Pacific FEF-3, EMD F7

It's early September 1988 and I was travelling on this train, the Southwest Chief, from Chicago to Flagstaff. At Kansas we were delayed 12 hrs by flash floods and then at some point before Trinidad one of the F40PH units failed. A Santa Fe SD45-2 was borrowed to make up power, but we were then limited to 60 mph. The train crew then started to hit their max hours at unplanned points and the relief crews weren't immediately on hand. I remember one crew changeover taking place in the New Mexico desert. We arrived 18 hrs late!

    SD45-2 and F40PH, Raton Pass

At some point in most engines' lives, they fail permanently and have to be taken away to begin new lives as razor blades, torque wrenches or anchor chains.

Class 03, Class 08 and Class 37, West Coast Main Line over Shap. The derelict engines are from Doncaster Works

Not sure if it's because of the theme, TSW3, or people's feelings for the contest in whole, but this was an extremely light week in terms of entries....

Guess we'll see if freestyle has any change on it.

I think it was the theme of the contest that did not interest to many people.

I was not interested of it so that is why I did not join.

Freestyle sounds more fun so probably many screenshots this week.

It got more votes than any other theme over the last month, so the theme should have been popular. It also got more votes than the number of people who entered. I hope we haven't got people voting for themes that don't interest them.

Congratulations Craigie-C. I hope DTG have got it loading correctly.
