Just spent an hour and 10 minutes on "Tis the Season" only to fail at the LAST stop by passing a red signal that was red for no reason.

How about instead of instantly failing, you just impliment a major point reduction? Id settle for a bronze than having to spend another hour+ repeating.

Why should we need to settle as a replacement for a standard gaming feature that should never have been removed from the game?

    Just a couple of observations:

    1. TSW is a simulation of a real life environment, namely railways. Railways have red signals, and they are never red for "no reason", the same applies to TSW
    2. If the signal was red (and you have HUD turned on) there is ample warning of the next signal aspect, and indeed the yellow that precedes it. If you SPADded, then you were driving too fast for the conditions of the route, if you couldn't slow down in time
    3. A SPAD is a game over. The mechanics behind this are debateable within a gaming environment, but again TSW is a sim, and running a red light on rail is a Very Bad Thing, with potential for loss of life at worst. Game Over is probably the best way of representing that

Save game of course mitigates the risk of running reds if it was available, and there are of course scenarios/services where the stop marker is too close to a red

This one was red for either no reason, or a very minor one. I was backing the loco back to park as the last step in the route. A stretch of track 50 feet from the red to the end of the track. No other trains around.

The save function is useful in many ways, in addition to "saving" you from having to redo an entire service because of a mistake. After all, this is a game that is supposed to be fun, not a simulation leading to actual to railway employment.

I do agree that a SPAD should end your service. However, I do not agree that red signals in TSW always make sense. I recall in NEC-BP where some signals won't clear until you make a station stop. This is not normal but a defect of TSW. And of course in SPG, the game forces you to stop at the bottom of a descent, just a few meters before a red signal that is very close to the previous signal. If you didn't save and you SPAD then it's 2 hours wasted. If you were able to save, then you could perfect your braking technique and become a better driver. Sometimes your service will even end because an AI train gets a SPAD.

TSW is not a perfect game, to put it mildly. It would be unfair to expect the players to be so. Matt has stated that save is a critical part of the game and I agree. And the sooner we get it back, the better.

I’ve never seen a red signal that didn’t make sense. Even the broken ones did.
