It is said that "In February 2021 the locomotive was moved to the Danum Gallery Library and Museum at Doncaster on a three-year loan from the National Railway Museum. It is planned that another locomotive will replace Green Arrow within the three-year period." 1. What locomotive is replacing Green Arrow on the mainline as he stays on static display, awaiting its overhaul? Anyone know? 2. After Green Arrow does have his overhaul in the future, will he be back on the mainline again?
I don't have any info at all yet, sadly, but green arrow is an absolute favourite of mine and when I was younger my grandad had so many stories to tell about Green Arrow specifically and the V2s themselves from when he was a lampboy. I do hope to be able to see her in steam again one day.
That is something I have always wanted to do since being a lad but we will have to see what the future holds.
As far as I am aware the NRM have no plans to return Green Arrow in the foreseeable future, although it is on the list of potential mainline steam locomotives. I understand the monobloc cylinder of the V2 makes this restoration particularly difficult. The NRM's Operational Rail Vehicle Strategy can be read at https://www.sciencemuseumgroup.org....19/03/op-rail-vehicle-strategy-2019_FINAL.pdf
There's been some speculation that Green Arrow may benefit from the work of the A1 Steam Trust in Darlington which is currently building the new P2 2007 Prince of Wales (mechanically the P2s were almost V2s with an extra driving axle- and notably larger cylinders) and, when that's finished and presuming World War Three hasn't started, then plans to build a V4 which was essentially a light-weight V2.
