In the most basic way possible it increases air compressor output to restore air in the main reservoir.
So on the Sprinters the compressor is belt driven off the engine, as such the output of the compressor is tied to the engine speed. In theory with the reverser in Neutral pressing the button (if my memory serves correclty) it should cause the engine to rev up to allow the compressor to run quicker and hence build air quicker.
