Hi I'm trying to get a service going on sand patch grade but not having much luck the forward locomotives are the SD40-2 and the rear are AC4400CW is the reason that I get nothing from the rear locomotives is because the front two are different?

Did you turn on banking comm before touching anything else? It's one of the buttons on the radio

In your case no. All of the locomotives in Sand Patch (Aside from the SD40-2S) should work in sync with banking comm. As Rennekton said, Banking Comm is essential when running with DPUs (Distributed Power Units). It can be a bit finicky sometimes, so make sure it's on in the lead units and the rear units. On Cajon Pass, you only need it on in the front. On the older routes like Horseshoe Curve, Sand Patch, Sherman Hill, and Cane Creek, it needs to be on in all of the units. This can be achieved by the freecam, opening up the window and turning it on, or walking to the back. Hope this helps!
