Hi does anyone why the amps on the SD42-2 suddenly drop then pick up again making you loose a lot of speed. Especially when climbing (Sherman Hill). I'm on PS5 TSW2.

It's a transition from series to parallel (I think... maybe vice versa) inside the loco and it is prototypical, also happens on F7 for example.

so there are no settings i can change to avoid this from happening. Quite frustrating trying to climb going at only 25 - 30kmh

Well on Sherman Hill you are not gonna go much faster anyway, it's quite steep. But make sure to enable banking comms if you have locos on the rear of the train, otherwise they won't help you get up the grade.

It's the train changing gears, same as a car with automatic gearbox.
The F7 has a switch on the wall behind the driver. Not sure if it is emulated though, I never tried to flip it.
One more thing: this is not a PS specific question, so you shouldn't have applied the Playstation tag. We're all in this together.

I recall one fine day standing trackside at Sherman in the late '80s or early '90s, watching 6 SD-40-2s on the lead hammer up the hill about 15 mph with a train that had a couple of mid-train helpers and a couple on the rear, too.

AFAIK, nothing goes up Sherman Hill quickly. I was out there in August of 2021, and the locomotives are quieter and more powerful, but the speed is about the same.

Was there ever a time when freight trains on Sherman Hill actually reached the speed limit? Did they ever run trains powerful and short enough to have a big enough power/weight ratio to be able to go over 40MPH?

Not likely. RR only assign as much traction as is necessary to get over the hill, not to get over it fast. Extra locos = money.

Probably the hot TOFC trains in the 70s. UP even ordered special SD40-2s (Called Fast Forties) for these trains, they were usually paired with Centennials (DD40AXs) l.
