Can members please help out by listing TS routes that contain either fully or in the main, semaphore signals instead of colour lights? As someone who once saw the encroachment of colour lights as a signifier of the end of days, it’s nice to travel some routes without them!
Western Lines of Scotland set in steam/early diesel era. A lovely route. Settle & Carlisle has some semaphores, lovely route too. EDIT; to add The Riviera in the 50s set in Cornwall.
Have a look at some of the older 1960s routes for Semaphore Signals The Weardale network is a great route and only £7.49 for a few days more https://store.steampowered.com/app/277777/Train_Simulator_Weardale__Teesdale_Network_Route_AddOn/ Comes with a Class 08, Class 25, Class 37 and Class 101 The Exeter - Kingswear Riviera in the 50s is another good route for £8.99 https://store.steampowered.com/app/...in_the_Fifties_Exeter__Kingswear_Route_AddOn/ Set in Steam days but nothing to stop you using Diesels as the route did not change very much until the mid 1980s Peter
There's a version of the Settle Carlisle set in 1975 on the Steam Workshop. Great route for BR blue or older stuff. OTS Northern lines v2.0 (not electric) has semaphore signalling on a great part of the route too, including Blackpool North before they ruined it. https://www.ontracksimulation.com/northernlines.html North Wales Coast BR Blue https://www.wotawallysbits.co.uk/nwc-brblue
South Lancs and North Cheshire - BR Blue https://www.wotawallysbits.co.uk/liv-man-br-blue-route That has a lot of semaphore in it.
Unsure if you are only interested in UK stuff or not, but Raton Pass does have some Semaphore signals, but I think they only exist east of Trinidad and are not animated. https://store.steampowered.com/app/704250/Train_Simulator_Raton_Pass_Trinidad__Raton_Route_AddOn/
As an aside, my local station here in Hastings still has semaphores. One of the very few places that have them.
Welsh Marches, a modern route but someting of a backwater signalling wise, especially around Shrewsbury and Leominster.
you could try some of my Freeware routes all at UKTS just extending 40147 on WCML Trent Valley from Nuneaton to Rugeley, will take it on towards Crewe as time allows. Jetgriff... Your screenshots look stunning alas not the period I play unfortunately... Kettles don't float my boat I'm afraid... Eric
well my Birmingham 2010 route is now approaching Stafford WCML here is north end of Milford Tunnel a few miles from Stafford... all colour lights though...
Spending some time on the WLOS yesterday, I noticed that distant signals aren’t included on the HUD, whereas, of course, single or double yellow colour lights are. Is that normal for semaphores on TS routes (forget what Wherry, etc, are like).
Distant Signals are not normally shown in the HUD as the Driver is not required to stop at them Just because a Colour Light is showing a Signal Yellow or a Double Yellow does not make it a Distant Signal Lack of a Red Light in it's make up makes it a Distant Signal This is Not a Distant Signal It is a Stop Signal that can also tell the driver if the next signal is a Red this signal will show in the HUD
Thanks for the clarification- I overlooked the fact that a distant semaphore is incapable of giving a stop indication, so I didn’t pick up on the fact that only potential stop signals are shown on the HUD.
Are there any routes available that have NO colour light signals at all, that might otherwise break the retro spell?!
Depends where you are I know they have a long history in the south of England, but in the the northern parts of Scotland they were unknown. Certainly I never saw any in the Inverness area until I moved away in the late 1980s.
Well, over across the pond we have a route called the Bessemer and Lake Erie (also known as Pennsylvania Steam) set in the roaring 20s, and used to be sold for 39.99 on steam, but was taken down by the prototypical owners for copyright reasons (similar to the Virgin/Arriva Trains situation). It was re-released around 1 year ago for free actually, but unbranded. Nonetheless I would recommend it if you perhaps want a change of pace (or region) and it's 100% complete semaphore goodness, since color light signals didn't become mainstream in the states until after the second World War. https://railworksamerica.com/index....:pennsylvania-steam&catid=20:route-collection
Cornish Mainline has semaphore signals and North Wales Coast (which isn't much help as I don't think it is available atm). The Peterborough to Cambridge route on Alan Thomson has semaphore signals in the March area. I have recently subscribed to this route and am trying to make scenarios for it but every time I try and load Carlisle to place AI trains it crashes. I have unsubscribed and deleted the route folder but after re-downloading I get the same again. Looking at the comments on the workshop quite a few have suffered from it, a couple of people have got it working by re-downloading but many haven't, the uploader sadly can't do anything about it. I assume some asset somewhere has corrupted? The original S & C route works in the Carlisle area. Has anyone on here got it working at all or experienced this?
It is a nice route, better than earlier versions of Western Mainlines. I might have a go at singling the bit between Truro and St. Austell as it was in pre 2004 but not sure I am brave enough yet!
Okay interesting, I will try it again and see if it works. Some seem to have got it working successfully others haven't.
Stainmore, Shap and Eden Valley and they're the proper lower-quadrant NER signals as well which rather show up the Weardale and Teesdale now. It (W&T) is still my favourite but I do find myself wondering how hard it would be to swap the signals out and if it would still count as the same route.
It had never occurred to me that W&T should be lower quadrant. I presume they would have survived like that till the closure of the closed lines or modernisation by BR. I assume swapping the assets in RW/TS Tools as you can do with track would be out of the question? I would imagine you have to do it manually because of all the links etc.
How do you mean "count as the same route" It is on your computer so you can change what you want I would recommend a backup though as a Steam update to the route would wipe out any changes. I have the Electric version off the Workshop which is a clone of the original route and because all the stations and tracks are the same scenarios from the default version still work. You would not be allowed to upload an amended version to the Workshop if you used assets not available thru Steam
Yes- a few people I know remember them (although the semaphore signals on the Weardale line now are upper-quadrant). I mean still be recognised by TS as the W&T so if I find a Workshop scenario for the W&T it will still run on it.
I remember when DTG first released the Falmouth branch with the signals from the S & D (I presume) which caused quite a lot of upset until they updated the route with lower quadrant signals. I remember the Weardale route was a labour of love for its creator and is one of my favourite routes, probably above the Stainmore route, I will just forget the signals are wrong, I hate knowing something is wrong though. I noticed with interest that the Stainmore route had lower quadrant signals and wondered if maybe the LNER had changed the signals on many routes but had left that route as it was.
Providing you don't delete any track or markers then any workshop scenario will still work on the Steam version If you have a cloned version then the workshop scenario could be downloaded to the default then copied to the clone If you wanted to just change the Signals on the default version of the route make a backup of the Tracks.bin file Then any alterations by Steam could be quickly changed back
That's a bit enouraging thank you. I figured that changing the track layout would scupper compatibility but short of that I didn't know how far you could go. Maybe start gently by moving the signal at Brandon that's inside the bridge abutment.
This is not ready for release.yet. It is based on James Street in N Gauge which is an exhibition layout. I think we have enough signals https://dwanddrc.wixsite.com/james-street
I got a 404 on clicking this, but see Wollybits has moved. There's some good 'retro' routes on the list: https://www.wotawallysbits.net/routes.html I see there's two variants of NWC now: https://www.wotawallysbits.net/nwc.html
There has been two for some time Not sure if the BR Blue version is to be updated to work with the new route. The Conway Valley route is being updated by Xavier at Backdated Trainsim - info on his Facebook page
Because no specific country was stated, I throwe some german stuff into here: - Rodachtalbahn v3 [https://schienenbus.net/strecken.html]. Nice non-electrified route set in the past. It has been shortly updated with a new section from Neuenmarkt to Oberkotzau - [STWS] Wetteraunetz ´90 v2: A branch line non -electrified that is in parts today not anymore existing. Included are the so called "Horlofftalbahn" (Hungen - Beienheim & Hungen - Laubach) and parts of the "Lahn-Kinzig-Bahn" (Lich - Hungen - Nidda). Both are nice Freeware, but be warned: you need additional stuff to download and also need some Payware (Köblitzer Bergland, Konstanz - Villingen, S-Bahn Rhein-Main, Mosel Valley, Hagen - Siegen, München - Garmisch)
East Midlands Coal is full of semaphores, not the most exciting of routes as it stands but a candidate for retro, reinstating the stations (platforms are there) and extending east to a junction with the March - Doncaster line Nd west towards Chesterfield. Collieries have rapid loading but retain the old screen loaders so they can be retrofitted.
This looked good, then I saw the list of requirements….. https://alanthomsonsim.com/download...steam-shrewsbury-to-pwllheli-and-aberystwyth/
