ICE on the Northeast Corridor? Not as far fetched as it sounds. Back in 1993 Amtrak was looking to improve on their high speed service on the NEC, replacing the aging Metroliner trainsets. 2 sets from Europe were tested during this time, the Swedish X2000 and the German ICE 1 train sets. These trials eventually lead to the modern day Acela. Here an ICE 1 is seen on the Portal Bridge over the Hackensack River, New Jersey.
