Loving Rivet's West Cornwall steam tour. Really great to be able to drive properly timetabled steam trains on a new route, though nine scenarios for £10 feels a bit expensive, despite the updated engine, and a steam train with AWS on the line with the least number of signals (and near zero chance of finding a red one) is an odd choice. It feels like an experiment. The light WCR timetable has room for more services on it, and this is a Rivet steam tour on a Rivet route. But having tasted it then... it works. Hopefully sales will be good and we can maybe look for more steam tours packs on London:Brighton, or Edinburgh;Glasgow, or maybe just West Somerset (crying out for this, surely?) *** There are actually 10 scenarios because there is also one on Edinburgh:Glasgow... but its quite well hidden!
Agreed with everything you said. I downloaded this and the Mainz route earlier today, and figured I’d give this quick spin- didn’t even plan on finishing the run. I ended up not being able to back out, it was that good. It’s a really engaging run with all the grades, definitely need to pay attention. I had good fun with it. And it made me wonder, man, how good would this route be as a full steam route.
Yes - there is an Edinburgh: Glasgow run as well. TBH I had missed it because of the slightly odd way that Train Depot categorises things (its listed under "LMS Jubilee Black: West Cornwall", which is a less than obvious place to look for a route in Scotland!).
I have to say that I was a little annoyed to see Dovetail say that you could use this train on other routes with Scenario Planner, as teir usual get out when you say you want to see a train on another line. No - you cannot build a timetabled route on Scenario Planner which appears on the platform displays and have passengers etc. These Things Matter. It's why TBH I rarely bother with Scenario Planner.
Agreed. Sadly they’ve spoilt this particular add-on by giving it an unrealistic 5-coach load, so I haven’t bought it, but the principle of add-ons which give an added dimension to existing routes is a good one. Hopefully we’ll see more of it. We just need Rivet (and to a lesser extent DTG) to get out of this infuriating habit of spending hundreds of hours making graphically excellent products, and then ruining them with basic operational inaccuracies which would cost nothing extra to correct.
It’s a good concept but it’s overpriced, and I don’t know how any can put up with the comically bad steam physics.
I've just tried the Edinburgh:Glasgow scenario and... its very lonely. I mean, the journey is fine - it's a good ride and there is a red signal to watch out for - but it is was a journey with no passengers, and no visible fireman to keep me company.. So... a bit weird... The steam hissed. I cleared my throat, but No one left and no one came On the bare platform. What I saw Was the 19:54 to Glasgow — only the train
Hard to argue TBH - it'll be £5 in the next sale, like as not - but I felt that the idea needs supporting as otherwise they won't do this sort of thing again, and we'll just be stuck with the apology that is Scenario Planner
