Which I guess is also applicable to other Bossman steam locos. With Difficulty set to "1" (so the auto fireman can be activated for coaling) having problems getting water in the boiler. Hit O/L and I/K to open (assuming closed by default) left and right steam and water injector valves. However even though the tender water level starts to drop the boiler level continues to fall. I'm guessing it has something to do with the trim setting particularly if pressure has dropped but what the manual doesn't tell you is whether the trim needs to be open (Ctrl K, Ctrl L) or closed to ensure the water continues to reach the boiler. I have also found the blower does not respond to N/Shift-N to open and close. Any guidance welcome, so I don't drop a fusible plug.
I believe you just need to adjust the trim until you hear the "whislting" sound and water stops overflowing out the side. Theres not specific way to trim. Different locos handle it differently and pickup at different points. I know on the real locos i have fired, sometimes i need to completly open the water inflow (Victorian injectors don't have seperate trim valves) and other times it needs to be pretty much closed for it to pick up properly despite the Boiler pressure remaining constant.
Thanks John, trial and error then. At least now I know where the water is going if not in the boiler!
At least on the JT Brit, apart from listening for the 'singing' sound when the injector picks up properly, you can also look for water pouring out of the overflow (below the footplate on the Brit) when it hasn't. I haven't driven the Jubilee but the BMG 5MT is similar in needing the valves to be adjusted until the injector works. Agree with Johnno that this is pretty true to life (from very limited experience!). On a real injector though, you can use the overflow to run a bucket of nice hot water to wash your hands at the end of the day!
