Hi everyone I use TSC on a Mac and run it via cross over however I've never downloaded anything other than off steam and was wondering if anyone knew how to download just trains routes while running TSC via cross over
I cannot answer your question as I play TSC via Steam on a PC. I am curious as I have a Mac and tried to install TSC via a program I think was called Wine without success. Please would you inform me how to play TSC on a MAC! Is it an easy process and do you have to have the MAC modified in any way.
there is a programme called Crossover which you are able to play windows games on MAC without any modifications to the MAC
Thank you Jonah, I will definitely buy that. Can I suggest you contact Just Trains support or even DTG they may be able to answer your question.
I'm assuming crossover just lets you run Windows, so just buy it, download it, and run the installer. I'm assuming also that you already have Steam and Train Simulator installed on your Windows partition, yes?
Unfortunately not. Crossover does its own thing without windows and one of the things that doesn’t work is the Just Trains installer. Strange that an installer doesn’t work but the game runs pretty well. A work around is to install on a PC and copy The assets and contents over, but no use if you don’t have a PC. I don’t use it after the trial ran out (also didn’t try it on an M1 Mac, but it’s supposed to work). It’s very clever, but easier just to use a PC for me.
I am using disk space to it’s limit on my PC so Crossover looks a solution as I have nearly 200gb left on my mac and can reinstall my foreign routes. Does Crossover work satisfactorily or do you have to do some modifications?
I used Crossover on my M1 Macbook Pro for over a year (and still do from time to time). It works pretty well and on medium settings you get around 20-30fps on older routes and 15-20 on newer ones. M1 Pro/Max and M2 would almost certainly have better performance. You have full access to the game files as it installs a 'bottle' which is basically a shadow C drive with all the relevant files like 'Program files (x86)' etc. A big advantage is that Macs have a very low power output so you'll be using a lot less power and producing less heat than a windows PC. The SSD and RAM is also very fast and I get less tile stutter than on my windows laptop. Unfortunately the Just Trains installer does not work as it says you need a windows framework update. I haven't tested the ATS one but the AP installer works fine. You are also liable to anything in Steam/TSC being changed which would mean it no longer works properly. I'm getting more crashes for example since the recent TSC updates when really there should be less. Having the latest version of Crossover installed may help with this but that can become expensive as it's basically a yearly subscription. After the year is up you can still use the version you have but no longer download an updates that CodeWeavers release.
how do you download AP add-ons etc, I've not attempted to yet so a description of how to do that would be very helpful
Firstly, download the add-on from the downloads section of your account on the AP website. Then bring up the Crossover window and right-click on the bottle that has your TS install in it and click on 'run command': Then click browse on the pop up and locate the extracted installer from wherever you downloaded it to: Then click 'open' and then 'run' and follow the steps.
Crossover is basically a virtual machine - it runs windows kind of like a virtual box. Back when Mac computers had intel processors, there was an awesome utility known as "Bootcamp" which allowed users to run Windows natively as if it was on a PC, the only difference was that you had to restart if you wanted to change from one OS to another, and the fact that most iMacs had laptop versions of proper GPUs, so in effect, one couldn't actually swap parts out. Those who owned the 27 inch intel macs could only upgrade the ram. That's how I got back into TS - ran it via bootcamp on a Mac. Side topic: Wonder what the odds of DTG actually making a native Mac port of this game?
