Yep – it's coming! New locomotives, new routes, new operators, new features, new music, new options, and even a new country. It’s all new for Train Sim World 4 – coming September 26th!

If you’ve been keeping up to date with everything going on then you’re probably fresh out of the mammoth 2+ hour-long Dovetail Direct: Train Sim World Keynote where JD, Matt, Lukas and Jordan went through everything you could possibly want to know about our next big release. If you missed it, don’t worry! You can go back and view the whole thing (again, if you want to) on YouTube.

But if you want to take your time reading all about it, we’ve got you covered. Below we’ll outline each of the routes and locomotives, the shiny new gameplay features, the different options available including pre-order extras and Early Access. There are also some handy FAQs that should answer plenty of burning questions on Train Sim World 4.

We’ll be publishing further articles focussing on individual routes and new features in-game in the run-up to launch, so keep an eye out for more articles and more YouTube content, follow us on socials (bottom of page), or sign up to our newsletter for more information over the coming weeks!

    The Routes and Locomotives

    S-Bahn Vorarlberg: Lindau - Bludenz
    [IMG]

Introducing: Austria! The seventh nation to be part of the Train Sim World.

The S-Bahn Vorarlberg Line winds through the Alps to the Austria-Germany border courtesy of national operator ÖBB, also new to Train Sim World. Big mountains and stunning scenery are the order of the day, as are a plethora of station stops on both the main line and the branch line that heads in the direction of the border with Switzerland.

Making the journey is ÖBB’s 4024 Talent (or the Talbot Leichter Nahverkehrs-Triebwagen) EMU. Variants of this unit are well accustomed to real-life service throughout Europe and even over the Atlantic in Canada but the 4024 is specific to Austria.

With new traction, a new operator and new signalling to learn, this addition to the Train Sim World map is the start of a journey through Austria. Who knows where it might take us further down the line...

Antelope Valley Line: Los Angeles – Lancaster
    [IMG]

The challenge of operating through the varied terrain of California continues!

On the other side of the Atlantic, the power of American diesel can be harnessed with Metrolink’s F125. Yep – you guessed it – this marks yet another new operator in-game, familiar to those in and around California taking passengers out from Los Angeles to the wider suburbs and counties.

The Antelope Valley Line runs out of Los Angeles Union Station, the largest railroad passenger terminal in the Western United States. After powering through urban LA, the line heads north to Lancaster, California and through areas that have seen dramatic changes since the late 1800s, including the impact of the 1994 Northridge earthquake.

Along the way players will recognise locations synonymous with Hollywood movies such as the LA River and even get involved in the action as part of one of the many in-game scenarios.

East Coast Main Line: Peterborough – Doncaster
    [IMG]

The East Coast Main Line is one of Britain’s most important routes, guiding trains of all shapes and sizes out from London and up through to Edinburgh in Scotland. The stretch between Peterborough and Doncaster, famed for its record-breaking location at Stoke Bank, continues to provide thrilling high speeds for LNER’s Class 801 Azuma which brings a sleek, modern new train to Train Sim World 4.

Along the way lie three more big station stopping points at Grantham, Newark Northgate and Retford. Near Newark, trains will traverse the last remaining flat crossing in Britain at Newark Flat Crossing, where the Nottingham to Lincoln Line intersects with the East Coast Main Line.

LNER are another new operator to Train Sim World, with the Class 801 ‘Azuma’ being their flagship train. This overhead EMU, complete in-game with a small diesel engine for depot moves and emergencies, represents contemporary traction along the ECML and a train that British travellers, commuters and railfans will have long been waiting for.

    LNER Class A3 ‘Flying Scotsman’
    (Deluxe / Special Edition only)

In Train Sim World 4: Deluxe Edition, the historic importance of the East Coast Main Line is enhanced with the introduction of the world’s most famous locomotive: LNER A3 Class Flying Scotsman. This icon of the railways, built in 1923, today runs at up to 75 mph across Britain bringing joy not just to railfans and enthusiasts, but to anyone with an eye for incredible engineering and an appreciation for the past. On 30 November 1934, Flying Scotsman broke the 100 mph barrier, becoming the first steam locomotive officially to do so.

    Railpool BR 193 Vectron
    (Deluxe / Special Edition only)

In Deluxe Edition, players will also be able to learn and operate one of the most high-tech locomotives ever to come to Train Sim World: The BR 193 Vectron.

Represented by leasing company Railpool, the Vectron will be available to run on freight services (formed of new EANOS wagons) across the Dresden – Riesa route Add-on (more on that shortly) as well as S-Bahn Vorarlberg, providing a rare opportunity to use the same locomotive across two different countries in Train Sim World.

    Nahverkehr Dresden – Riesa (Upgraded)

The home for the Vectron is an upgraded version of the hugely popular Nahverkehr Dresden – Riesa route Add-on, complete with new Vectron services, volumetric skies, TOD4 lighting and the full set of Train Sim World 4 features.

Players that already own the previous version of Nahverkehr Dresden – Riesa can take advantage of the upgrades by purchasing any edition of Train Sim World 4. The BR 193 Vectron is exclusive to Deluxe and Special Editions and cannot currently be purchased as a separate Add-on.

    New Creative Tools

Your Hobby. Your Adventure. Your Way.

In addition to the routes and locomotives, new features form a crucially important and exciting part of Train Sim World 4, bringing new ways to enjoy your railway hobby, embark on your adventures and play your way.

    Scenario Planner 2.0
    [IMG]

A key feature of Train Sim World’s Scenario Planner has been the ability to utilise a diverse range of owned content to operate any train on any track using your own created scenarios. For Scenario Planner 2.0, this tool adds a number of options to move closer towards detailed scenarios and movements, with Chained Paths now a feature for Train Sim World 4 routes. Chaining paths will allow you to plan a route from A to B, but then continue back to A, or even onto C and so forth.

The ability to set times, weather and add more detail to descriptions for sharing in Creators Club will also be implemented, giving the tool much more flexibility for creativity!

    Livery Designer 2.0
    [IMG]

Livery Designer also gets some upgrades. If you’ve ever made a mistake using this tool, then the addition of Undo / Redo options might just save your next masterpiece! Unlocking more creativity is the lifting of the layer limit to 1000 and text options now appear by inputting characters into the UI, rather than placing individual letters. Font selection will also be available, including the Johnston and Rail Alphabet fonts.

Once your livery has had its final touches and you’re ready to start using it on the rails, the options to Toggle On / Off the livery ensures that it appears when you’d like it to, without having to delete or recreate it when you want to enable it into your favourite route.

    NEW FEATURE - Photo Mode

Screenshot depicts Photo Mode for Train Sim World Compatible: Linke Rheinstrecke – available as part of Train Sim World 4: Special Edition or separately as a route Add-on.

Screenshot Competitions just got a bit more serious. A dedicated Photo Mode now gives you the option to pause the live action, set up the angles, admire the scenery and enhance shots with filters, blur and exposures, giving more freedom to capture your journey at its best. Examples of the kinds of shots you’ll be able to take in Train Sim World 4 can be seen in this article and we’re very excited to see what you, the Train Sim World Community, can capture with this brand-new creative tool.

    Creators Club Improvements
    [IMG]

In line with the improvements and new creative features, Creators Club itself has had an upgrade which includes:
    • Reworked, easier to use UI
    • Search filter based on the content that you own
    • Other improved search functionalities
    • Improvements to Dovetail Live

New Gameplay Features and Graphical Improvements
    Scoring 2.0
    [IMG]

Scoring has long been a way for Train Sim World players to judge how well they’re driving a certain route. But the measure of Action Points has focussed primarily on timing and the accuracy of stopping at stations.

In its updated guise, scoring now reflects the challenge posed by enabling safety systems in the cab and having things set up in the correct configurations. Driving without wipers on in inclement weather, leaving the train in an unsafe manner, braking too harshly or coupling with too much force will also penalise you, making the final scoring much more representative of how professional your run really was!

    Ease of Access
    [IMG]

Ease of Access features are crucially important for those new to Train Sim World (welcome!) but also make the journey easier for existing players or those getting used to the new and exciting features that Train Sim World 4 offers. These include:
    • Locomotive difficulty tiering
    • Improved player assists to get you out of sticky situations
    • Simpler HUD (plus new mini-HUD)
    • Automatic coupling and yard routing
    • Improved key mapping for accessibility
    Graphical Weather & Lighting Improvements
    [IMG]

More generally throughout these new routes (including the updated Dresden – Riesa) a number of graphical improvements around weather and lighting have been implemented to enhance the driving experience from inside the cab. These include:
    • Volumetric Fog
    • Improved rain on windscreen effects
    • Controller Haptics (+ lightbar & audio functionality for PlayStation Controllers)
    • ‘Moments' in Scenarios
    Free Roam
    [IMG]

If you’ve ever wanted to be serendipitous or enjoy more of Train Sim World on the fly, then Free Roam’s new spawning and despawning tools will allow you to do just that. Whilst on foot, options within the UI will bring a whole new dynamic and an adaptive play style, so that you choose what train to operate, where and how.

New Feature - PC Editor (Beta)

We’ll have much more to talk about on the PC Editor (beta) in a future article, but in essence we’re giving ambitious PC players the tools required to one day make your own gameplay features including routes and locomotives! This highly technical feature will test the skills of the Community and we can’t wait to see what amazing creations players will make with this feature.

I'm so underwhelmed it's unbelievable regarding the TSW 4 base routes - there's hardly anything here that excites me, if at all being honest, compared to previous editions of TSW. Ironically, the Vectron and TOD 4-updated Riesa-Dresden is the most interesting...

Was really hoping route-wise and content that TSW 4 would offer something really interesting, but instead there's:

    - Voralberg: 44 miles potentially with just one EMU for the bulk of services; really hope there's a lot of extra content that can be used, so far they've mentioned the Vectron and in the stream I noticed a RABe 523, but really hoping there needs to be more. Was hoping a new Austrian route would be like one of the modern German routes in terms of lots of content and playability.

    - Antelope Valley: it's a long passenger route without tunnels which is great, but from what it seems there's very limited services and single track which makes me wonder what the long-term playability is - I'm thinking what about the LAMP system? Will LA actually be busy, or mainly empty? Where's the MP36H, surely can't be just the F125!

    - Peterborough-Doncaster: Very disappointing overall. Just 5 stations with mainly high-speed services; are these stations too going to all be mostly empty - well Peterborough will have the Class 700, yet ironically the /0 doesn't even serve here in real life as the Horsham services are all exclusively the /1. Really wanted ECML South, as the Azuma could have been complemented by the Class 700, 387 and so on. :|

Overall, disappointed that TSW 4 is a thing, especially considering the work and that a lot of older routes in TSW 3 and 2 etc is still much needed. It feels like with every new TSW edition that previous routes get left behind, and it's so frustrating when there's so many fantastic routes already in TSW that are crying for more DLC and/or content/features.

So does this mean that just like 2 TSW3 is going to be dropped like a hot stone and left with tons of bugs and broken achievements?

I mean they did say they will update tsw3 but considering what they did to tsw2, I wouldn’t trust DTG to do what they say

They'll continue support for a few weeks then drop it I read, so no chance of fixing the multitude of bugs that plague tsw 3 in such a short time I bet.

Very well done dovetail! This looks LOVEking amazing! Absolutely hats off to you guys! Brilliant! Just a question, the ECML says it's a route extension. Is this an extension for midland Mainline?

Why was it listed as an extension on the stream? Guess they made a mistake.

Which Unreal Engine version will TSW4 use? UE 5.x or still UE4?

Disappointed.... all the features could be implemented easy into TSW3 but it looks like TSW will probably get new iteration from year to year.
I dont see any interesting routes and locos for me so there is no reason to but it.
And i think i will stop buying this game in the future aswell.
Ive thought TSW3 would be a base for further updates and addons (long term project) which would keep this game bigger and better but i have deceived me..... all the features and community requests were for TSW3 and now you drop it and show us the fancy "new" TSW4.... Really disappointed....and i say this as an fan/owner (previous TSWs) of nearly all Dlcs for TSW3 and approx 350h playtime....

I'm struggling to understand what's included in the Deluxe version, it says an additional 4 compatible routes. But which are they?

Are we not getting regional bundles for pre order?
I am only interested in the ECML and Flying Scotsman and really don't want the Austrian or US routes.

And fair price of nearly 49 euros. For people they complaining... Its very simple you can never pleased everyone in this community and i don't understand some overreacting reactions here in the forums. You never been pressed or its required to buy this game! You can alway stay at the actual version. I can not wait to play! Again thanks :D And my personal favorite is the Flying Scotsman what a stunning loco!

Finally an Austrian route for TSW!

Preordered the Deluxe Edition , because I already own all TSW3 routes featured in the Special Edition.

    But I have some questions:

Am I correct, that all TSW3- Routes will be transferred to TSW4?
And will the Addons-Manager be included in the PS5-Version?

Very little freight (one diesel freight engine and an Eanos wagon! Gee whiz!!) and no mention of shunting/switching work. Despite the (rather meager) discounts, I'm not very enthused yet.

If you're porting the DLC to TSW4, please don't forget the People who got Rapid Transit back then with the Founders Edition Upgrade.

Cough, cough. What about preserved collection of TSW2, which remaining unfixed for ages? 187? Passengers rush hour system for London to Brighton? Additional fixes and improvements for MML and so on and so on? I highly doubt that all those bugs will ever be fixed. Instead of this DTG again attract us with raw half-arsed bugged product in shiny wrapper. Will it work for old players, who have already bought all previous parts? I don't know. As for me I'm still on TSW2 and haven't ever installed TSW3 yet, but I have 3 in my library. The king died long live the king. My feelings are absolutely contradictory

Those 4 routes are in the special version!
Delux has Vorarlberg, Antelope and ECML along with Nahverkehr Dresden if you don't already own it (updated to TOD 4 if you do), The Scotsman, the Vectron 193 and a decal pack.
Special edition has all that plus SEHS, Linke Rheinstrecke, Boston Sprinter & LGV Mediterranee plus a second decal pack

HA! I thought TSW4 was true and a lot of people have been vindicated including that French web site. Have DTG stated what they doing with TSW3 routes and more importantly TSW2? To think I nearly bought TSW3, dodged a bullet there eh?

The East coast route only looks interesting to me but I need to know the above before even looking at it. One thing puzzles me with the Flying Scotsman. They talk about the importance of the East Coast main line and the record set at South Bank. So why didn't they do the train that set that record, the MALLARD! Looks miles better that the other one.

Looks like a miss for me and if you pre order going by DTG's record you are in for pain. Will DTG actually do a version with the routes people want and without that 'training Centre'?

DTG: "I'm gonna pay you NYT timetable to [I'll censor this myself]"

So yeah, TSW3 is dead, along with TSW2, of course.

DTG JD Sorry not sorry for pinging, but may I ask for the community - since when did you know the promised TSW2 fixes will NOT release? TSW4 probably wasn't made yesterday, so it had to be in planning and development for quite some time and the TSW2 fixes are still on the June roadmap. I am SURE it was all axed by that time, so this is the moment when I very confidently and accurately can use the word lie. Thank you in advance for your honest reply.

But what about the routes? That will be the heart of the matter. Some people have spent a fortune in previous versions and if they don't get a free upgrade to the latest version they are going to be miffed. This is undoubtedly a money grab worthy of Bethesda or even EA. I can also see DTG dropping the GWE altogether. And of course JD knew all along as they all did but of course they will not admit that.

ease of acses... why? After a month of playing this game represents a dumb level. Instead of making it harder they dumb it down even more...

Hi DTG Alex just wondering: Will TSW 2 & 3 routes come to TSW 4? Haven't heard it mentioned anywhere.

A shame as I'd love to pre order. Guess I'll just have to wait until September 26th.

    Looks like you need subtitles...
kolesnikvictor was asking about the promised stuff, and my reply was "Ain't nobody got time for that" as if said by a DTG developer.
The translation: the development team are very busy working on new stuff, they have no time for fixing the old stuff.

    2 Things:

1: I'm not blind, I can see 2 foot in front of me

2: I hadn't a clue as I just seen it in my notifications and if multiple people reply to one thread it comes up as one person.

Very nice to bring the icon the Flying Scotsman in TSW.

Also nice to see the Vectron. Interesting to see if it has ETCS like in real. Very nice to see the Siemens logo at the loco. I think that's the first Siemens loco that has that in TSW.

Hopefully there will be playable freight services at Antelope Valley Line. A future Pacific Surfliner loco Add on for that route would be nice too.

I hope so? ECML has passing interest but more interested in the forthcoming Blackpool - Ormskirk route. Hopefully this might come as a bundle like Birmingham Cross City did (although I think that was done to placidate those interested in UK routes as TSW3 core route was the SEHS extension).

What will the update be to the Dresden route? Any extensions?

No extensions announced or known planned, I believe they called it the TOD4 update, it’ll be mostly to do with how the route looks, it will include the route features of the new routes like the the new fog system what will be in TSW4 routes & I think it will be open to the scenario planner new things in TSW4 (I haven’t seen that confirmed about scenario so it’s a maybe possibly currently)

Heres a question that i have. Will Scenario 2.0 Functionality including Chaining Paths will Come to older TSW 3 routes eventually?? It doesnt make sense to have this ability for JUST TSW 4 routes IF there are lots of routes that have limited pathing options

sounded in the stream that they may but didn’t confirm it precisely.
