Introduction Hi, welcome to another post in my series "Improving Lineside Industry". I'm going to be looking at various routes in Train Sim World and highlighting what we have, and what we could have, in regard to railways that serve the various industries along them. I find these to be very interesting, and I think maximising opportunities for players to use them in TSW would greatly enhance our game. I've tried to limit any suggestions to what is just about already within the scope of the route, and might just need some extra modelling of scenery, and perhaps a few new wagons. It must be said that I haven't been a fan of railways for very long, and I'm from Australia, so I'd love for you to add your knowledge about these far-flung routes and correct anything I get wrong. I have speculated at times, as information can be hard to come by. (Some of the screenshots here of the in-game map are rather poor-looking as I couldn't do any better with their resolution when zoomed out. Some areas do not have 3D buildings on Google Maps so only some locations will have those images included.) Route In this post, I'll be looking at Boston Sprinter. I believe the route is set in 2018. Here is a map of the route as represented in game, numbered with each location that I will be highlighting. Industries Location 1 Starting at the north of the route in Readville, ABEX Transportation has a rail-served warehouse. Players could spot boxcars at the unloading docks that exist on the side of the building. (The final image was taken in 2023 when a third siding was added.) Location 2 M.S. Walker is an alcoholic beverage distributor and manufacturer of spirits. Their factory in Dedham accepts liquid materials by train. Players could spot tank cars here (and perhaps unload them with the game's interactive hose function, unless that takes too long). Location 3 Home Depot has a distribution centre in Norwood and it is connected to the mainline by a winding branch. Wood makes up most of the freight delivered. Players could run around their train of center-beam flatcars and spot them across the sidings at the site.
Location 4 In Stoughton, on the branchline, Cohenno Lumber has a rail spur via which they receive various forms of wood. Players could spot center-beam flatcars and boxcars here after running around the cars down at Stoughton station. Location 5 Tighe Logistics Group in north Mansfield accepts and dispatches palletised goods by train. Players could drop off and pick up boxcars from their siding. Location 6 National Lumber gets wood and paints to its north Mansfield site. Players could bring boxcars and center-beam flatcars here. Location 7 With a spur to their complex, Advanced Warehouses also uses the railway to take delivery of freight pallets. Players could spot boxcars here. Location 8 Just north of Mansfield's train station is some unloading equipment to move some sort of powdery material from train to truck. Players could spot covered hopper cars on top of the unloading pit.
Location 9 In south Mansfield, Miller Recycling Corporation focuses on the collection, sorting, and dispatch of a variety of materials. They use the railway to dispose of baled matter. Players could spot boxcars at the side of their building. Location 10 In the business of warehousing and transportation, Barrett Distribution has two sidings along the side of their facility in Mansfield. Players could arrange boxcars here. Location 11 CTX Group is yet another distribution company who is served by the rail network. Players could spot boxcars at their unloading dock doors. Location 12 Boston Cedar takes delivery of wood products via rail in south Mansfield. Players could bring and remove boxcars and center-beam flatcars to this location. Location 13 Milton's Distributing is a specialist in the alcoholic beverage supply chain. Players could bring boxcars to their siding that runs inside their warehouse.
Location 14 Just off the mainline in Attleboro, international gas company Linde has a distribution depot. It receives gases and liquids by train to later be sent onward by truck. Players could deliver full tank cars and remove empty ones (and perhaps unload them with the game's interactive hose function, unless that takes too long). Location 15 South Attleboro is home to Roberts Chemical who make chemical products used in water treatment, agriculture, and surface finishing. Some of their raw materials are provided by rail. Players could deliver tankcars (and perhaps unload them with the game's interactive hose function, unless that takes too long). Location 16 The Providence Journal is a daily newspaper based in Providence since 1829. It receives paper rolls to print on from its rail-connected loading docks. Players could spot boxcars on their unusual curved siding. Conclusion These industries are served by CSX Transportation and the Providence and Worcester Railroad. Locations 3 and 4 are served by CSX B710. Locations 5, 6 and 7 (as part of the "Chocolate" [CSX's name] industrial park) are served together by CSX B733. Locations 9, 10, 11, 12 and 13 (as part of the "Zayres" [CSX's name] industrial park or Cabot Business Park) are served together by CSX L011. Location 16 is served by P&W PR-3. In game, CSX could service all Locations for simplicity. I hope this was interesting. Please feel free to add to this and let me know what I've got wrong. Thanks for reading!
