The Coast Rail Express (COASTER) of San Diego County has a small, but reliable locomotive fleet. The backbone and majority of COASTER's motive power is five F40PHM-2C built by Morrison-Knudsen, now Motive Power Incorporated. Unlike Amtrak's F40s, COASTER's F40s were lengthened to allow for a seperate HEP system that is not directly attached to the prime mover which increases fuel efficiency and savings.
