I'm using the latest version of the .ini, and as for the type of ini, as described in the post tried all presets today. Asus Zephyrus G15 2021 GA503QM (R7 5800HS + RTX 3060M Max-Q + 40GB RAM + NVMe SSD) Running at 2560x1440p 144Hz GSync/FreeSync Off Temps are fine, laptop is using the original brick charger, plenty of wattage, every single other game performing just fine. TSW3 Settings: I've tried taking down all the Ultra stuff to Medium/High/Very High to no effect on this problem, it doesnt even give me that much more FPS honestly. Foliage I heard was a performance sucker, but again no/little change taking it to medium etc.
I’d say that looking at that your laptop just isn’t up to playing this game at those settings with ini changes on top. The ‘very low’ preset has virtually no visual enhancements at all, consisting only of changes to the lighting, so this should have no effect on the game’s performance at all. It looks, of the basis of what you’ve said, that your CPU just isn’t strong enough, that’s why you making changes to the graphics settings is having no effect. Your bottleneck is the CPU, not the GPU. On that basis I’d suggest trying to run the game in DX12 if you’re able. That should lift some of the load off the CPU and give it more headroom.
A blind taste test. With the exact same fog settings in the game, one of these is default and one is edited through the ini files. I have a clear preference but would be interested to know if others agree with it. Which is best, Image 1, 2 or 3 (post below)? Image 1 Image 2
Image 1 appears more natural for sure. How bad does that single light cone from the double lamp platform light look though?
Thanks but as mentioned I've already tried DX12. I still have my doubts that it's related to my laptop as someone else made the exact same report here earlier - around 12fps in only a few specific intense stations/areas but not others (really!), and butter-smooth 60-70fps performance anywhere else. Such an incredible drop of performance seems a bit odd, considering my laptop runs almost every other game (some even more intense) just fine. It could be a specific line of the ini not agreeing with a certain system configuration etc. I understand it would be quite hard to narrow down something like that though.
Can I double double check that you don’t have your Sky Quality set to Ultra? Your image suggests not but just in case…
Hey all. Just wondered if there is anyone that would like to test an updated ini (preferably now) on a mid-range ish PC with a mid-ish range preset. I'd like to know how the marginal changes to volumetric fog perform on other machines. TIA
am happy to give it a go. I am low to mid range hardware but use highish parameters - mainly ultra - in game. am curently using the Jetwash Ultra 2 ini. I find it slightly dark but this might be the way my graphics stuff is set up. The volumetric fog on the above works very well and seems to be as intended.
This looks so good Sometimes i have a hard time completing a run because i randomly stop at a station and just soak in the lovely views and sounds Cheers
I’ve just uploaded v2.1 which includes TSW4 specific changes. I am now suggesting that the use of the SkyLight Intensity slider in the GodMode mod is mandatory for this to work as intended, and would very strongly suggest using LondonMidlands signal visuals and Laika’s rain mod alongside this. Finally, from an audio point of view, my in-cab weather mod works much better with TSW4 than it did TSW3 due to the sound mixing in the units themselves and really adds a lot to the immersion in my opinion ToD4 v2.1 includes the following changes; Changes to the sunlight intensity figure to work better with TSW4 A refinement to the legacy emmissive figure to give the best looking screens I can across all the TSW4 locos. This is closer to the TSW3 figure than I initially thought. They are now readable at night instead of burning your retina’s out! A number of small changes to volumetric fog which are very much an evolution than a revolution as what is there already is very good. I have adjusted the way the loco lights (particularly) reflect off the fog to be a bit less intense and allow better visibility as a result, as well as altering slightly the way the fog looks below lamp posts etc to try and make the single light (where there should really be 2) a bit less obvious. Finally, the pixel resolution of the fog has been increased slightly to reduce banding https://www.trainsimcommunity.com/m...ini-tweaks/i3889-tsw4-to-d4-lighting-overhaul The audio mod is here; https://www.trainsimcommunity.com/m...nd-rain-thunder-sounds-in-cab-tsw4-compatible
Thanks for your hard work, JetWash. I had just installed v2.0.0 1 hour ago; i will give this new version a try.
I'll give it a shot, though my old machine is probably these days at the lower edge of "midrange" (i5-7400/RX580)
Thank you as always Jetwash, love your mods. Will your EP for SEHS and Peak Forest work currently in TSW4? I'm not sure what mods will and won't work currently.
Query for JetWash : have you (or anyone) found a way to make signal lights more visible in TOD4? As it is you can barely make them out until you're right on top of them.
As it stands none of those mods are working (I haven’t tried them obviously but believe that to be the case). You can try them but from what I’ve heard your game will crash. As and when it’s feasible to get them working with TSW4 I’ll endeavour to do so.
On the DL page for the ToD4 mod there is a link to LondonMidlands signal visuals. That should be exactly what you’re after. A massive improvement.
That’s a version specifically for TSW4. As it stands anything that mods the core (so my weather audio, Laika’s rain, LM’s signals (which DTG have moved to the core so the mod now works on ALL signals including US and German stuff - an awesome decision on their part!)) work fine. If the signals were on a route-by-route basis like they were in TSW3 they wouldn’t work. Anything that mods route specific stuff, textures and the like will currently very probably cause the game to crash. Obviously the ini tweaks work as they are outside of the game. There is a semi-workaround but I believe Matt has suggested not to use it as DTG are working on a fix to the problem. The good news is ECML uses the same foliage as Peak Forest so as soon as can be done we hope the Vegetation mod can be re-built with that as the requirement instead of Peak.
Hey JetWash Which setting does the following: A refinement to the legacy emmissive figure to give the best looking screens I can across all the TSW4 locos. This is closer to the TSW3 figure than I initially thought. They are now readable at night instead of burning your retina’s out! Cheers
The last entry before the one’s that start with ‘volumetric fog’ and includes the words ‘legacyemissives’. The default is 2000, I adjusted it to 500 for TSW3 and have settled on 550 for TSW4. I tested it across all the locos at night and during the day and it seems to work the best. Ideally we could set them individually but that isn’t possible.
It varies from route to route and weather to weather, but I’d suggest generally no higher than 0.45 and no lower than 0.2.
I have been using a november midday with full fog and cloud to make the comparisons between 2.00 and 2.1.. 2.1 looks slightly denser but retains the same subtlty. might prefer 2.00. Will try a few more. Don't normally run with fog so hard to compare but have tried a couple of times of day and night. All looks very good and no effect on frames.
Denser fog? v2 was just default fog, v2.1 should be pretty much the same during the day and less dense at night as per the screenshots. V2 didn’t have any fog changes in it FWIW. If you prefer that just delete any line starting with volumetric
No, I like V2.1 as it is. I would not bother with TSW were it not for what you and your modding colleagues do. You make it ! How it sells when the streams show such a washed out experience I do not know.
Fog aside, I have just run MML and Peak Forest and I am sure the lighting and definition are both improved over TSW3 by the latest Ini., Ultra V2./2.1
Makes me jealous, unfortunately, there is no way I can afford to spend $1000+ just on a graphics card such as 4070 which probably won't run this and all games at Ultra 4k. I saw the pricing for the 4090 series cards at $2000+.
You won’t need to have a 4 series or even 3 series card to do this. I am on a 2080Ti and I pass my exact config to a friend who is on a 1080 and we both maintain solid 60fps.
So I'm using the Beyond Ultra v2.1 ini (not the 12GB VRAM one), and generally everything is working well - although occasionally I get weird very low-res cloud formation right above me that casts a corresponding low-res shadow pattern all around. Any ideas what could be causing it? I have Sky setting on Very High.
I’ve no idea, I’ve never seen anything like it. What exact settings (route, service, weather etc) are you using?
Antelope Valley Line, AV212: Lancaster - LA Union. It's part of the Rail Journeys, so whatever the default weather settings are for that.
That image was taken somewhere between Sun Valley and Burbank - I can get rid of it sometimes using God Mode and environment settings, but it seems to happen even with Clouds and fog are set to zero, but it might be linked to Wind Strength oddly. Edit: I can't recreate it every time, but it's happened three times on AVL at different points.
Try as I might I can’t recreate it. I’m not seeing anything remotely like that. Is your GPU maxed out? Maybe it’s an artefact because your system is under too much strain.
Yeah it's possible it's linked to that, I'm running an i9-12900KF with 32gb RAM and RTX 3080 GPU. Sticking it in 4k with that engine.ini is going to be pushing it, I expect.
Have just run 5 or 6 legacy routes in September, mid day ish, light cloud. Jetwash Ultra V2.1. They all looked literally stunning and they really surprised me with the perfectly saturated autumn colours and beautiful lighting. Absolutely spot on. I only perceived two stutters on the whole session. Thank you for all you have done. This mod does help compensate for having lost the other mods we had in TSW3. I leave God Mode at the default 1.00 for best reults for me.
Hey all. I’m constantly playing around with these settings to improve things for TSW4. I don’t want to release them until it’s settled because constantly having to download updates is a pain for people. I could really do with some people with different machine specs to test things if anyone fancies it. Without it I’m having to guess where to pitch the level of changes which is an inexact science. For example, I’ve managed to push the Ultra settings to closer to the ‘Beyond Ultra’ setting on a 3090 without it harming performance much and it’s looking pretty awesome. As a consequence I want to push Beyond Ultra further but have no reference for how far is too far. I have a 3090 but could do with a couple of people with a 40series card (a 4090 would be super helpful), a 20series card (2080 or 2080ti) and perhaps a 10series too. I don’t know the AMD range so we’ll but would be more than happy for AMD users to get in on it too. DM me if you’re interested in helping out. Thanks in advance.
On your Ultra v2.1 for TSW4 I have a RTX 2070, some ram on board prob about 4 G, GPU I7-8700. 3.2 GH. 16 Gs of RAM and use Dx12. frame rates are 32 and a bit below in places, occasionally down to 17, but all smooth running. Virtually no stutters. Graphics superb, would be hard to see how they could be better. Screen full 4k. Don't know what DM is but happy to help out but am a rank amateur.
Better late than never as they say, Image:3 Also saw another post on using Reshade, and was wondering what would be the best use. And JetWash if you are still looking for a ginny pig to try out an ini setting for TSW4 ready to rock.
peterchambers SGTDRE That’s brill. SGT, could you remind me of your system setup? I’ll send you the lines via DM (Direct Message on here) when they’re ready. Thanks
Thank you for these updates, much appreciated. Is it okay to use the TSW3 UK foliage EP on TSW4 or will there be an update for that at some point?

I haven’t tried it but I’m fairly certain it will crash the game. In fact, that’s why I didn’t bother. We will update it as and when mods work as intended and reliably with TSW4. When that will be is anyone’s guess sadly.
