They are ready, only waiting for a free time slot to be released... until they will be impossible to be released, because they weren't actually that ready.

Shouldn't there have been a TSW3 patch today? I thought it was meant to come alongside the launch of the thing they released today. Or was it put under the dreaded "coming soon" title?

Exactly. The TSW3 patches, including but not limited to improved NYT timetable, SFJ fixes, and BR 143 tutorial, were always listed as coming at some later, inexact time after the launch of TSW4. Of course some things that were promised, such as Class 700 stop markers, will never come to TSW3 at all. I mean, you wouldn't expect DTG to give you something that you paid for for free, now would you?

I think I just confused myself.

I bit the bullet and brought tsw4. I ran it in default and had flickering on the trees. I quit and changed then ini file and it all stopped and the brightness is so much better, it is so toned down.

I hear you so loud and clear - but have no trouble being satisfied with TSW3 - or back to TSW2 if updates are not applied to 3 or it is left kind of broken.

Someday, who can say when, some poor, unsuspecting person at DTG, maybe even someone who doesn't even work there right now, will announce that something is ready to go, but just waiting for a release slot. The reaction, I think, will be... unkind.

Kind of makes you wonder why better ini settings aren't the default. It's like they purposely send the game out in a poor state?

Those lucky 33,333333% of players who can fix their *.ini files in an ordinary text editor ...

But, but, but wait a sec ......................... that means to 66,66666% of their playerbase DTG gives [EDIT - Jan - Language]. Not really clever, no?!

    Hello everyone,

regarding the ini discussion, there is a very insightful thread you can find here: https://forums.dovetailgames.com/threads/please-optimize-tsw4-engine-ini.73687/
Both Matt and Will are giving much better answers than I ever could, so it's worth a read.
We do welcome your feedback and are taking it in, but please be aware that making any changes comes at your own risk.

    All the best,
    Jan

Appreciate that Jan but still begs the question why the default settings, particularly brightness, are so off centre to start with. Enough people have complained about this now, or are we up against someone on the production team being convinced theirs “is the way” (sorry for Mandalorian reference!) and too pig headed to change things.

Better still why should we have to mess about with the ini and not given sliders to adjust from the UI?

If Matt would at least have provided a response after asking me what my issue was, perhaps I could accept this.

Don't force me to buy a newer version of the game when you haven't fixed the problems with the older one yet.

    Or

I don't have to like the response but if one was at least given, I'd be OK with it.

Of course! Much as I respect and admire the efforts of the modders, players should not need to make any changes to the software to make the game-play, lighting, sound or any other feature acceptable or better than the release version.

We are not software engineers, nor are we beta testers. The game should work to a high level right out of the box.

I hope we haven't reached the point where the developers rely on unpaid amateurs to bring the game up to snuff. It does seem that way sometimes, when you read about DTG " working with modders ".

I see the whole brigade of users who defend dtg still have their Rose tinted glasses on.
While those in the real world have a buggy, stuttery game/simulation/beta.
And to think, all those who knew this would be the case were chased with pitchforks and lambasted by ambassador wannabe's

Thinking about the download difficulties, IF I would buy TSW 4, just one more item on the list not to buy. I wonder if DTG is aware that they let their customers suffer through this stuff just to let them publish some changes in the game. And thinking one year ahead for TSW 5 even larger libraries must be redownloaded. Unbelievable people let this pass.

This stuff will happen with each new release. Also bear in mind the download fiasco only affects those that choose to buy it up on the first day. Better off waiting a week for all the stores to update and fix entitlements before even attempting to import your old content. Beats having to pull your hair out and hearing "we're working with store partner X to resolve Y". Why bother putting yourself through such chaos? Use your older game (it's 99% the same anyhow) and better yet buy the new one much later at a deep discount when a ton of patches are applied. Learn from past experience for next time. Launch day will never go smoothly.

I wasn't even expecting to get TSW4. I'm no less against putting fixes for existing content behind the pay wall of a so-called new game; the only reason for getting TSW3 was the save game fix. But I was sold on the free roam mainly, QoL features secondly, and I really do like what I've seen of the new routes and Flying Scotsman, so with loyalty discount that was actually really good pricing.

But this DLC fiasco isn't a major issue for me. It isn't great, but I'm not short of other things to do with my time while it gets sorted. The only time I'd be annoyed is if it doesn't get sorted for every bit of DLC.

On this one ^^^ I do believe wholeheartedly that they are and yes are expecting the modding community to patch/fix/repair, why they learned very fast as they watched the modding the community do their best to patch/fix/repair. Just as Bethesda did with FO/Skyrim and now one of the biggest DLC-sized mods and it may even be bigger, it is called FO London, for FO4, Bethesda even hired two of their best modders that worked on that community-made mod. Now they have a job working on whatever Bethesda needed them for.

So when will DTG do the same? I can feel in me ole bones, everything in me is screaming this will happen, and we may get better DTG content and lose good talented modders that do this for the love of it because they want to, in one way good for them they make good $$.

The one other thing that I have been biting my tongue on, is Two "ex ea game employees" now work for DTG, Yes you can call me an ole tin foil hat nutcase, well I'm a bit of an ole geezer, and looking for my Tuesday discounts :)
But are they really "ex ea game employees" why would I say this you ask, well I will point you to the game I talked about Earth & Beyond, and so many other studios ea gobbled up and shut down, I'm sure with a bit of searching anyone can find plenty of info on this as well as the devs that were let go by ea.

I know what I sound like, but here is the question, am I really that far off? Only time will tell. Oh yeah, TSW5 is already being worked on as we talk here. TSW4 was not done in just 2 or 3 months, though it kinda seems like it.

Had to have taken at least a year as the routes aren't that easy to make.

Would still put it around the time of TSW3 though.

The killer is how easy it actually is to do and if it does not work, you just delete. Shame for console players it does make a world of difference.

Now managed to grab 90Gb of the data, which has jumped from a total of 164Gb to 180Gb...

Reminscent of one of those corridors of illusion where the faster you walk the end gets further away.

Ah well, just let it all trickle in over the next several days. Managed to finish up Taymyr in Snowrunner, taking a look at Kola - boy that one seems tough!

Actually DTG (RailSimulator.com) was founded by an ex EA employee ;). Being an addon developer at first (called RSDL, they did the Isle of Wight route for Rail Simulator), they saw the massive commercial potential of Kuju's Rail Simulator (which was started as Microsoft Train Simulator 2 until MS lost interest and dropped the project, leaving Kuju to look for funding and publishers) - Kuju interestingly had just bought themselves out of a publishing contract with EA - and bought the game, enhanced it and named it RailWorks, later Train Simulator. Some of the Kuju staff went over to join RSC(DTG), but the company still exists.

    Short version:
    - Small developer studio named SIMIS from Shalford, Surrey gets hired by Microsoft to make a train simulator - MSTS
    - SIMIS (now named Kuju after a management buyout from Eidos) are hired again by Microsoft to code the followup, MSTS 2
    - Microsoft sees no commercial potential and drops development on MSTS 2
    - Kuju continue to develop their engine and look for funding and publishers
    - EA takes over and publishes Kuju's "MSTS 2", now called Rail Simulator
    - Kuju are not happy with EA and buy themselves out of that contract
    - ex-EA employee Paul Jackson, founder of Rail Simulator Development Ltd. (RSDL), buys Rail Simulator from Kuju
    - RSDL becomes RSC (RailSimulator.com), Rail Simulator becomes RailWorks
    - RSC are firming under the trading name "Dovetail Games", RailWorks becomes Train Simulator
    - RailSimulator.com is bought by Focus Entertainment, founder Paul Jackson retires as CEO, ex EA employee Jon Rissik follows as DTG CEO.

    :)

Interesting, as I just bought a few Railworks games on Disc and they came from the UK, it looked like it was separate entities/companies, and ea was just the distributor. Yes, I should have done better research but was a bit quick on draw, appreciate the info.

You'd probably be hard pressed to find a studio that doesn't have ex EA employees given the turnover rate of redundancy waves there.

Oh and someone said it would cost DTG money to keep older versions of the game in the store.

It's not like Dovetail is a multi-million dollar organization.

That I'm not surprised at, ea employees as in devs ie; working stiffs, or those that had a corner office with a view. If these were people in positions of decision-making, as they are now at DTG.
A bit off-topic here, but To find the bad guys you find a way to think like a bad guy and with that the who what where why when. Many have said it, maybe in passing but I'm having a hard time not believing DTG is going down the ea road where to?, and who is whispering into whose ear?

Just did a quick search of them, and some of what they made I have not heard of, they were around a long time in the UK and yeah now under ea, that is what they do keep growing.

I don't think it's right to think in terms of good and bad. It's business vs creativity. Depends on the balance.

Like Ayrton Senna once said "Formula One is 95 percent business and 5 percent sport" (quoted from memory)

Some of your details here are inaccurate:
    • Simis was purchased by Eidos in 1995
    • Simis was then purchased back from Eidos by its founders in 1998, who renamed it Kuju
    • Kuju was thus already named Kuju when hired to make MSTS
    • Kuju independently started work on MSTS2/Rail Simulator with no direction from Microsoft
    • They pitched it to Microsoft, but Microsoft at that time was working on an MSTS2 with a different studio and turned them down
