I thought that I was going to get away with creating a formation of two rail vehicles that, in theory, shouldn't couple together.
The Formation Editor let me do it and both the 'boxes' appeared in the Timetable Map and main screen which looked hopeful. However when I pressed the Play button only the front car actually appeared in game when I started the scenario.
Is that correct or can you "force" together two rail vehicles of differing types?

So some things are made to be together in a certain way. Putting them together in not the way their designed stuff may not work right etc.

Some stuff though will happily got together if couplings match. Again though some stuff that aren't meant to go together if they are put together you'll get wierd stuff.

No you cannot. The couplers are simulated in simugraph. E.g. a vacuum braked van will not brake if the engine is set to air brakes.

Thanks guys. I thought that that would be the case but no harm in asking.
