https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-66967170 Our newest TSW Steam Loco, The Flying Scotsman, was involved in a collision at Strathspey, on a heritage line - in real life. Two people injured.
Yes, from what I have read and been told it was a rough shunt and both injured parties have been discharged. Nothing too serious with most damage being the catering equipment from what I have gathered.
Unfortunate there were minor injuries but TBH seems another case of the media jumping on the bandwagon and blowing out of all proportion. Not trivialising what happened but back in the days of portion working or loco changes travelling by train, experienced more than my share of lurches when things got pushed together with more haste than should have been applied!
I got shown this earlier today and my exact words were, "Is that it? Hardly a tap" because that's all it was and from my own personal point of view the driver is not fully at fault here. There should have been absolutely NO ONE on that observation platform during the shunt, though I am sure that the RAIB will have something to say too. Shunts like that are not a rarity, and I have seen much worse than that this year alone but especially when I first joined the railways shunts like this happened everyday, obviously without injuries as there wouldn't be people stood where they are in this case. Just to clarify everything above is my personal opinion and personal 'scratching the surface' view on the incident.
I remember when I joined the railway in 1977 in the Parcels Office at Northampton, on nights "sheeting" up the traffic for the Bedford delivery rounds, myself and the railman who did the calling out would jump in the vans that arrived in the bay, sort the stuff out and start writing them up (so you could get your head down later). The 08 would be busy shunt releasing and reforming the vans ready for departure and I can tell you there were some rough old moves while that went on! Strictly against the book but no-one, not even the Station Supervisor minded, got the job done and it was more interesting than sitting in the wooden shack freezing your ***** off after waiting for the traffic to be unloaded.
