Basically, someone has set up a petition to the government to try and get them to give an extra holiday day because they want to celebrate the class 37 locomotive.

They didn't give us a bank holiday to celebrate Scotsman's 100th so they really aren't going to do it for class 37s.
This would get laughed out of the house of commons.

I will definitely not sign that. It’s ridiculous that someone should think a bank holiday should be given for a locomotive and I wouldn‘t want my name down on public record as supporting them. Totally potty.

I'm always down for more bank holidays, there's not enough of them during the year. They definitely wouldn't pass one over a Class 37 though, despite it being a brilliant locomotive.

Halloween and Bonfire Night however? They SHOULD be bank holidays. There's a lack of them in the latter part of the year, having those two would fill that void :)

This, basically. Petitions should be for life changing or life breaking issues (like the runaway energy costs and the government and Ofgen allowing it to happen), not a Bank Holiday to celebrate a diesel loco, iconic though it might be. Otherwise what’s next, a BH for the Routemaster bus?

Lol. Friend sent me this. Wanted to draw attention to it. It's probably useless anyway. Thought it would be nice to get a few more signatures though. :)

If we're talking holidays later in the year then it should be Armistice Day, 11/11.

Well I for one think it's perfectly reasonable. People celebrate animal days like chickens cows etc so I think it's perfectly reasonable.

Yes, but an official bank holiday isn’t granted for such things. Bank holidays have an impact on the economy, they’re never granted willy nilly.

So a randomly chucked bank holiday (with no purpose) happens on the first Monday of August.

And also August 1st. Another randomly chucked one.

I can’t remember the last time we had a bank holiday to commemorate a chicken.

I wouldn’t think those petitions have ever changed anything. Government response is always we plan to do nothing or say it’s already planned if it was announced previously and never do it. Parliament is similar response, bunch of yapper never brung up again afterwards.

Edit: sure the day would actually get more support from me than the football one… but if you’re up for celebrating a class 37 day, better to forget the central government and enjoy the day the way you want it.

The August Bank Holiday is the last Monday in August and is the Summer Bank Holiday (England, Wales and Northern Ireland). It’s the first Monday in Scotland. Doesn’t seem random in the least given it was trialled for 6-years beforehand.

But still the point is there's more pointless things than a Class 37 day.

Unfortunately we live in a society where people just hate on others for the fun of it.

Don't think anyone is hating on anyone.

Your opinion is that it's a good idea. Mine is that it's stupid. We just have different opinions. Doesn't mean either are wrong.

Unfortunately that's the trouble with society today. If you have a different opinion, you're a hater or worse.

Why does a difference of opinion = haters? If we all had the same opinion, the world would be a very boring place.

There are lots of celebration days, many made in jest, others for awareness or marketing, but none of them are public holidays. It’s the calling for a public holiday for a Class 37 and the starting of a petition to government for it that is the daft part. Whoever is the leading voice in Class 37 appreciation or heritage can easily proclaim a specific date to be “Class 37 appreciation day” and publicise it around train enthusiast circles and that would be grand and worthwhile. Expecting everyone in the country to get a day off with full pay for it is ludicrous and that is what the sensible people are pointing out here. No hate, just education.

So your trying to imply that there's no sense between the people who want this to happen?

    AtherianKing Guest

there was another petition for one (holiday) to trigger if England won the football match in World Cup, I think it had a lot of signatures (makes no difference anyways as the petition system is a joke)

just saying they’re not unheard of that’s all.

Only difference being the circus is funnier ;) suppose it will help their career in entertainment when they inevitably join a Rupert Murdoch show.

Best not delve too far into politics on the forum though ;)

I’m not implying it, I am saying it directly. Asking for a bank holiday for a locomotive and expecting that there would be any chance of it ever happening is something that no sensible person would do. It shows a total lack of understanding of what a public holiday is for and what would lead to an extra one being granted. A locomotive just existing is so incredibly far from what would lead to a bank holiday being granted that the thought of it should never have entered anyone’s head, let alone passed any kind of thought process that led to actually setting up a petition for it to be entertained by the government. I’ll extend that to everyone who signed it too.

Ok but I could be wrong but didn't it get 300 votes in a day?

In a way yes, the petition has got a few signatories, the word used for people who sign a petition. That doesn’t change how daft the whole thing is.

If you look at the underlying data, it's been running since the 7th June. It only has 10 days left to run. It got signatures yesterday because it was posted to a couple of Train Sim forums, I suspect it's not going much further.

We've discussed bank holidays, we've discussed the Class 37, but...

    Why June?

300 signatures vs the 10,000 required is nothing at all. Just a measly 3%. And if you think only 10,000 signatures would be required to make the Government even look at it seriously.

362 / 67,330,000 is not "so many people", it's "nobody"

it is, the system is just not worth using.

searching the topic of “Health” for example

this is the top result and response… every one gets no plans or a political answer which leads nowhere.

    upload_2023-11-28_0-31-51.jpeg

The full response just talks about what’s already there. No plans to do anything.

To put it in to perspective, 362 is 1/27th the number of votes that the Official Monster Raving Loony Party got in the 2019 UK General Election...

Personally I don’t sign the petitions as i see them as a waste of time as they never get implemented, not one regardless of topic.

if they were taken more serious (meaning if the government didn’t practically veto every one) then I’d probably reciprocate that.

Generally I would support it as a one off, but not every year :D
