I've just opened GWE and the first thing i notice is the Class 52 & class 47 from WSR in the timetable on Class 66 services and I'm thinking to myself WHY !!!. they look totally out of place on this modern timetable so im thinking this is a bug.
I have “Diesel Legends of the Great Western” and its a bit of fun, but as the original timetable is set around 2015 the two trains in question have long been withdrawn from main line service.
It's easier for DTG to use already existing stock as filler for other routes, instead of actually releasing new locomotives and rolling stock. Fed up of driving the same boring Class 66 on everything? Well, now you can run wildly outdated and unrealistic stock on the same route instead.
New trains are hard to make from what I gather. Makes economical sense to reuse assets where appropriate, although the line is crossed when it isn't realistic.
The reason for this is Skyhook oddly adding Cargo Line Petroleum services to the WSR 47 and WSR 52 as well as the Class 66 included in the pack. A weird decision I know but that's what the problem is here.
Very uncommon but preserved locomotives have been used for main line freight in the recent past: Class 52 D1015 'Western Champion' on Loaded Freight at Bristol Parkway 17/09/21 - YouTube Guess Skyhook did this to add a little more variety rather than having just the Class 66 hauling everything.
It not as horrendous as it first looks as Freightliner have a BR Green 47 they use for various duties including freight and as someone else pointed out a western did pull some tankers on the mainline. It's still not ideal as none of the locomotives in the game have all the additional features a mainline certified locomotive would have. I appreciate the attempt at extra gameplay and i would enjoy driving it once or twice but I wouldn't want to see it as Ai.
For the class 66 you can replace the original one with the newer version from Southeast high speed or the RHTT. Remember non custom skin RHTT Class 66 is the weathered and dusty paint EWS. As a matter of fact whenever I play the Great Western Main Line I always make sure I get the newer class 66 because it has the working train length indicator display on the top left corner of the cab
personally I don’t mind as long as it’s not selectable by Ai and is only player choice whether to see it or not.
Surely more driving/route options in game is a good thing? It may not be 100% accurate or typical, but does it really matter?
According to Adam, This was an unintional effect todo with Cargo Line Vol 1. Personally I see no problem. There has been a 52 on freight a few months ago (ableit) having a GBRF 66 as insurance, also the other week there was a Green Class 37 helped out a 60 on the Drax workings afdter the 60 has failed. So vintage locos are still about and can be used. really see no problem and think it should stay. The same as the 72 stock on one of the stations on GWE towards London (can never remember which one) it looks out of place but theres something there in the station. (blame me for that). It was boring going past and not seeing any underground train there. It adds to the realism and seeing either a 47, 52 or a non EWS 66 on the oil trains whether on MML or GWE adds to an air of intrigue. Hentis
How the ‘Diesel Legends of the Great Western’ pack included the Class 08 & Class 101 but left out the Class 42 Warship, a real western region legend, is utterly beyond me. It was an extremely lazy effort by DTG, reusing the ubiquitous Class 08 and the 101 which was used across the country and is not particularly linked to the Western region. Warships & Westerns go hand in hand when discussing Western region diesel hydraulics, and it was very disappointing that DTG didn’t put the effort in to create the Class 42 Warship.
