What are you trying to link up? would they be able to work together in real life? do they have the required power source? - in short - I think we need more information to help.

    Definitely need more details.

For the time being I wouldn't try to do too much with EMU and DMU style trains - there'll be an update that makes this work a lot better.

Ice 3 (br 403) in new formation editor :
Using only 2nd class for formation and it doesnt take any power.

Of caurse it cant be in real life.
BUT you can run this after modding :

So back to the question ,
Do we need editing RailVehicleDefinition to make illegal muti-unit formation to work?

    I understand.
    Only class 101 / class 43 / Ice 1(br 401) works fine ,
    others are not.

But I'm curious what modders did on illegal formation.

if you're trying to create formations in ways that dont really exist then you might not have any pickups, or you might not have any motors or something like that - the in-game vehicles are set up the way the real ones are, so should largely act the same way the real one would (or... wouldn't...) in that consist :)

If you therefore want to make such a formation work then yes, you'll need to hack RVD's to put in whatever missing components you don't have.
