Hello TSW-Community. Since I'm trying to build my own route at the moment, I have a quick question. Can I use 3rd-party assets for my own route, like the trees from the Niddertalbahn, for example? Or is it only allowed to use assets and trains from DTG? Thanks in advance, Fahrgast.
You can use assets from any DLC you want since it's just linked and the players who will want to play your route will need to own that DLC as well.
It is allowed to use any assets (trains, scenery elements, buildings, vegetation etc.) from Third Party Developers like TSG, Rivet Games or Just Trains for a project of your personal purpose. Premise of course, you own the DLCs having them. However, if you plan to release your project becoming an official third party one in the future, you need to get in touch with the respective creator and make an agreement about the value of their contribution to your product and probably need to give a share to them. Not quite sure whether it is even necessary to get a permission first for releasing a project including (references to) third party content on a freeware site, but I guess not. But with or without permission, as Tomas9970 already said, the players of your route need to have the same DLCs installed as the assets are referenced only in that case. If they don't have the DLCs, said assets won't spawn when they are playing on it as the referenced assets are missing.
Also consider reading this, it's about third party content on the Unreal Marketplace which you could use for your project: https://forums.dovetailgames.com/threads/unreal-marketplace-compatibility.75327/
