    Hello everyone.
I have recently bought a new laptop that is the MSI Katana 15 B13V and I have installed Train Simulator Classic onto it thinking that it would right out of the box as this PC is a 2023 release. However I have encountered crashes and random freezes on the 64 bit launcher. However on some routes, I can use the 32bit launcher with no issues but not all routes will load. I have even set the graphics to medium in hope to alleviate the problem but it seems I am restricted to routes that were made pre-2018 which is not good. Is there any fixes or patches to get the game working. I have Windows 11 on this new PC and its a 16gb RAM if that helps. Also should I use the 4gb patch for the 32bit launcher? Or would it be find as it it? I have plans to make new let's play videos and I want to get this working properly like it did on my old laptop that has reached the end of its service life that I used in the last 7 years.

    Thanks in advance
    Peter.

I had some issues myself. I have two ideas about yours:
    • Do you have workshop subscriptions?
Extracting those used to be problematic, resulting in garbage, which in turn caused the scenario database crawler to fail.
    • Did you try installing just a couple DLC to see how it works?
My install currently only has good old ECML and the asset pack.
Minimal install, no 3rd party, etc. See that it works first.
Otherwise, I hope someone comes around with ideas on how to LogMate, although it may not actually help you.

(It is also possible that the game isn't entirely Win11 compatible. I have a game that relies on retired DirectX methods and therefore doesn't run.)

Thanks for the tips. I didn't think about the subscribed routes and scenarios. I will bin those and try again. Although I have been lucky with the Hamburg to Lubeck and the Koln to Koblenz and they work fine with the 32bit launcher. I have also had positive results with the RSSLO locomotives like the Eurodual and the BR247 add-ons that I get yesterday and they work flawlessly. It seems that the older routes work okay on medium settings with the 32bit launcher but not the newer 64bit launcher.

Very odd as I can run Forza Horizon 4/5, GTA V, GTA Trilogy and even TSW 4 runs without a hitch although they are heavier games than this and yet the TSC 64bit launcher seems to like having tantrums and doesn't want to play ball. Well I am happy to play in a limited way on 32bit. Also for the record, my GTA San Andreas from 2005 works fine on Windows 11 with the stability fix on it. So I suspecting there is a conflict somewhere in the 64bit launcher.

I am going to try playing the 32bit launcher again but with graphic settings to high now I know that medium settings are fine on 32bit launcher. DTG might need to look at what is working on the 32bit launcher and see what is not working on the 64bit launcher and work from there. Maybe they can reach a breakthrough.

If you have a GPU on your laptop, make sure TSC is using it. If it’s using the integrated graphics that will often cause issues in 64Bit. My fairly decent laptop just crashes with a black screen using integrated graphics, but switching to the 3060 gpu, everything works fine.

Ah thanks for that mate. I have a GeForce RTX 4070. I assume this setting is in the options menu within the game? I will check now :). I really appreciate the help and assistance on this.

No, not in the game. Google Force game to use Nvidia GPU and you’ll find it. It’s in NVIDIA control panel I think, but I’m not at home. So can’t check.

EDIT : Found the link I used to do mine https://www.alphr.com/force-program-to-use-gpu/

I am pleased to say that the game is working better since I have done this. Not yet tested all the routes but I can confirm that the game is more stable now and it runs okay even with graphics in high mode. I just need to do more tests and then I will install the Midland Mainline add on with the extensions etc. I am optimistic about my let's plays working fine but I always follow the rules of clear cache.

So this is what I did and this might help others that have bought a new gaming laptop with Windows 11. I have the RTX4060 GPU on this one so here is the procedure.

    1, Open Nvidia Control Panel
2, Click on "Manage 3D Settings"
    3, Click "Program Settings"
    4, Click "Add Program"
5, Find "Railworks64" and select "High Performance Nvidia Processor" and then click "apply"

This worked for me and thanks for the help folks. I will let you know how it all goes on the more hungry routes.

My experience after struggling for 2 years was to find out that my pc was loaded with an old BIOS which clashed erratically with the GForce video driver. Any updates I made to my pc or video system did not solve my issue until I managed to load an up to date BIOS.
Not saying this is your issue however it was unexpected with a new pc

I think I clicked lucky as my issue was that the game was picking the internal graphics and not the GPU but thanks to Tigert1966 for his invaluable help on this matter. I am now all set up and running and the game runs fine on this new PC. It doesn't overheat either as this game doesn't overuse the GPU too hard :).

I think it would be very handy if Railsimulator would list the Video Card in use somewhere in the settings menu.

Windows/System/Display/Graphics/Custom options for apps/scroll down the list of apps and set Railworks.exe and Railworks64.exe to high performance.

Did you change any settings in the Nvidia Control Panel or just leave it as default?

I have not been able to get the DX12 version to work satisfactorily. I crawls along at less than 10 FPS. I have confirmed that it is running on my RTX3060 12 GB card. Any suggestions? It Railworks64.exe works very well with FPS capped at 60fps.

I didn't touch anything other than add the Railworks64 Launcher. I don't recommend the DX12 launcher as its unstable. Just use the normal 64bit launcher as its solid and more stable. I have been using it for about a week with next to no issues.

The DX12 Version was an experiment that didn't really work. I run a 4090 and only get 15fps on WCML South at Euston. 64bit is the version to use. There is a long thread about it somewhere and pretty much everyone has the same issue. I did get it to run at a reasonable fps by switching some settings, but there was no point continuing to use it.

I am using the 64 bit beta and it runs good. I try the DX12 once in a while to see there is any improvement. So far it's just a boat anchor.

    Thanks,

I had not updated my Nvidia drivers for some time - as they worked ok.
But I have installed a new version and previously people had mentions about using different settings in the control panel.

I had to allow Steam through my Firewall on the first installation but the game should reference the Nvidia GPU automatically but if it does not. Just follow the steps on my earlier post that I did and see if that works. The chances are if the game is crashing is due to the fact that the automatic detection of the Nvidia GPU didn't work and you will need to manually add it. As the game is likely calling on the integrated graphics instead of the GPU. This will cause the game to freeze and randomly crash. Also make sure you do a clear cache in the game every session as a bad cache can cause the out of memory errors. This has happened to me.

Yep it's really strange will work one minute then not again for several hours I did notice windows auto turning back on firewall and anti virus and some scenarios work then don't the next load even after clearing the cache

Okay. Now here is a question. Is Railworks64 in the list of apps in the Nvidia Control Panel? It's under Manage 3D Settings>Program Settings. If its not there, then that is highly likely the reason why you are getting crashes because Railwork64 is using the integrated graphics instead. I am not an expert on this topic but when I added Railworks64 to my Program Settings. The crashes went away and the game works fine now.
