Then again, DTG could be messing with us, knowing one of us might look.

There's still a chance TSW5 will be an app upgrade (similar to TSW2020 or TSW2 Rush Hour), not a new game though. Somehow I have a feeling they might go the TSC path that was proving to be very successful - and a lot less hassle (actually zero) for the distributing platforms with their web of DLC entitlements and dependencies. We know what happened last year. It took weeks for console players to be able to download all compatible content.

They can still just rename the game without making it a new app with new depot dependencies. Same app ID and depot dependencies, new revision and core route bundle. Just like Train Simulator.

I'd bet a few quid on that happening. Which is what the community demanded again and again, and technically it's the better way to upgrade in-place than to leave a trail of different builds around.

    Apparently, yes.

Anyway, it's (almost) been a year. In DTG terms that's ten years :D

We have the threads every year, and I’m sure we’ll even have a TSW6 thread not long after TSW5 comes out.

We have the usual protests, “cash grab” “never giving DTG another penny” “lazy DTG” we see it all the time.

The people who were never ever buying another piece of DLC, you know 5 DLC’s ago. Buy, refund, rebuy, repeat.

I’m sure then everyone on here who is disgusted at the thought of TSW5 coming out, won’t be buying it then will they? Right? Oh wait!

If it is as disappointing as TSW4, no, then I won't, just like how I never bought TSW4.

Thats exactly the reason why I opposed the subscription model they introduced on TS Classic….I gave DTG my reasons on the survey. DTG are fast becoming the new EA!

It wasn’t really meant as an analogy but rather pointing at what some people on these threads about a new release sound like when posting about it being a paywall. It works even better if you read it out loud with an agitated high pitched voice, the kind of voice I put on when reading posts out loud to my wife so we can have a chuckle about what people have posted here. I’m sure the staff at DTG read things out in the same voice, or at least they will start doing it if they read this, it’s great fun.

You have to someone remember, those of use on PC were extremely use (And still used to) DTG making the free yearly updates to TSC with the yearly route packages (Though IIRC most of those eventually included routes released in the previous year) so its probably one of the reasons we don't like TSW getting this yearly release like most sports titles and such, especially if some of the features are those that were teased or promised for earlier renditions.

Unless there is vast improvements and new features (or a blo*dy amazing route) I do not see why we need (or want) a new game.

    It seems speculative about TSW5.
as in nothing is actually announced?

what I would say though is that this could be a very expensive mistake if it’s true. I have for a long time bought the new UK routes and TSWs when they’ve come out. However TSW4 just doesn’t do it for me anymore, I rarely load it up. The content creators are just not quite hitting the mark for the money in my opinion. So I definitely won’t be buying unless it’s bargain basement price from the get go. Which it won’t be.

As ever, this will not be a real upgrade from the previous version. I bet that it'll be the same old Únreal Engine 4 with a few little tweaks be added the game, nothing more. Another yearly attempt at a cash grab from Dovetail. This really is getting tedious.

Why should they? They mentioned annual versions last year...

But as always: I don't beleve it until the official announcement. Those loading screens can also be a trick to let us think and speculate. This secret mongering wouldn*t necessary if everything was settled.

After I spilled a cupful of used tea leaves onto my deck of Tarot cards I became aware of this powerful prophecy...

TSW5 will probably be released with the highly anticipated suspension features that was promised for TSW4. The "feature" will not work properly and cause a multitude of new problems that will produce much gnashing of teeth and woe. DTG will offer the usual apologies and calm everyone's shredded nerves by insisting that patches and fixes are being worked on.

Several months will go by before a tiny patch is released that does very little to rectify this latest characteristic DTG clusterfrack and actually introduces a few new problems that had never existed before. Matt will then do one of his comical live streams desperately promising full fixes are just on the horizon in another laughable attempt to pacify the angry mobs who by now realise he is actually talking about a very distant horizon... on the planet Mars.

A few more months will go by and then Matt will announce that all the fixes to the patches and updates for the fixes that patched the updates are ready to be released and are just waiting for a nominal slot to be discovered. A few weeks of ominous silence follows and then TSW6 is announced along with the news that the fixes to the update that patched the original updated patch fix will only be available for people who buy TSW6.

The community will then erupt into the now traditional annual hate frenzy and Matt will disappear for a while keeping a low profile whilst they wheel out a flustered Alex to pump out the usual bland and meaningless corporate platitudes and promises that hold as much weight as a used car warranty deal from Arthur Daley. Months of pointless dreary waffle sprinkled with enthusiastically delivered false promises will follow and the whole cycle will repeat again in preparation for the next cynical cash heist that will be TSW7.

Welcome to the wild and wacky world of the DTG annual game title changing farce.

I have no clue what you have followed the last week but not what i have seen.... They announced that it will released end July start August so this whole suspension thing is not what you think!

Many were saying TSW4 was a mistake and could see the end of TSW! If that were true we wouldn't be on here now and they wouldn't be about to release another paid iteration, if indeed that is exactly what is happening.

I have used TSW4 since its released far more than any previous version, I am also keen to see what is coming in the future.

JT certainly hit the mark with the Blackpool route and whilst I agree some of DTG's UK releases haven't been the most engaging this year, they have been good quality, the GOBLIN line is one of the best. There has been some very good non UK content such as Rosenhiem and Semmeringbahn.

Hopefully we will have, from DTG, some longer UK routes this year with some non electric traction.

The thing I think of most is the price, and whether or not they follow TSW4's example. If a route came out for TSW today which was done to the level of detail featured in the likes of Niddertalbahn, Blackpool Branches, GOBLIN line ect, and had more than one train ready to go, a full loaded timetable complete with layers, I think the vast majority of us would gladly fork out the £30 or so required for it. Add on top of that an extra loco pack extension, and you've paid a little over £40 for the full route experience. Now that's for one route and one loco.

What about the exact same price tag for three routes and two loco packs? That's what TSW4 gave us, and that's not even mentioning the new features outside of the routes. Some might have seen those features as small or trivial yes, but they exist. It is way more than the same price tag would give you if it wasn't a new game.

There might not be any guarantee that those routes will match that standout level of quality, but TSW4's lifespan has definitely seen an increase in quality compared to TSW3, even on less remarkable routes. Compare the level of detail on Birmingham Cross City to Maintalbahn for example, there is a noticeable difference. The third party projects like Niddertalbahn and Blackpool Branches really showed up what TSW can do, and we got the likes of GOBLIN and the remasters of WSR and Glascow Cathcart in response, all standout in the looks and timetable department. DTG know the standard that they now have to work to, and while of course it is by no means guaranteed, I find myself surprisingly having a little bit of faith that they actually will keep to it.

I can't say much on bugs, I'm in a minority of people that just avoids them once I see them. My limit gets drawn on gamebreaking bugs though, like when the steam engines used to leap into space when braking. I'm lucky enough to be on PS5 rather than Xbox so I don't see those Zfighting issues, I know that would probably annoy me to high heaven and put me off the game entirely since there's no escaping it. Suspension physics not being fully implemented even now is definitely not a good thing, and they're slipping it in a patch literally right at the last minute before TSW5 is announced. One bug that I know does annoy me is the fact that I can't even sometimes place a locomotive in its own country in Free Roam because 'Formation Does Not Fit In This Scenario'. What sense does it make that I can place a NTP Class 47 on SEHS, but not a BPO one? Paywalling the fixes for things like this behind a new game is where I definitely agree with the masses, it's just wrong.

It's not great, the game and its community as a whole would definitely be so much better off without it being a thing. But it's far from the only game that does annual releases, and there are many far worse examples of this model creating impassable paywalls. Just imagine if they pulled a COD and charged us £70 for the next iteration. And no matter what, at the end of the day it will still be cheaper than building a model railway layout, going on a railtour or even riding on some heritage lines. It's actually surprising how railways really are an expensive hobby anywhere you turn.

At the end of the day, the sentiment a lot of people echo is true. Vote with your wallets, as is the way with a lot of things these days. On my part, if the routes and locos are done even at least to the same standard as the TSW4 launch ones plus at least a couple new base features, I'm buying.

This is all assuming that they follow the pricing model of TSW4 though. If they start pushing above that, then there's gonna be a problem.

Finally if I was to speculate what the new features in TSW5 will be, I wouldn't be surprised if there's a TOD5 lighting upgrade which features some level of ray tracing. Since they're now throwing suspension in at the last minute patch, all the standard locos and stock in TSW5 will probably have it from the get go. Formation Designer will probably come out of beta and will be sharable in the community hub (even though this too was stated to be a TSW4 thing). In the last roadmap stream they talked about the fact that community made timetables could be shared in the community hub even to consoles because they're just basic configs and not actual masses of data, or something to that effect, so further down the line I think that might end up being a thing.

TSW is a game that will played by many fans and people that write that TSW is dead this only a way to spread negative vibes and those people have a opinion thats way beyond the reality. The amount of 3rd party is growing and more of them have adopted the game in their way of Selling product for train Sim enthousiasts so thats absolutely not true

I think what would be a good idea is if DTG was to make TSW5 and make it a brand new Shiny game in Unreal engine 5 but keep supporting all current content ,and over time make less for the old game, but don't do it all at once, would add something exciting and enticing if you could'nt wouldn't or didn't want to move over straight away

it’s (‘TSW5’) more likely to be the same price as last or around £5-£10 higher due this years joy of inflated prices.

I was just wondering whether anybody had thoughts on the routes that could feature in the highly likely TSW5 that we could speculate about. My prediction is that it will be C2C for the UK route but I would love a London Underground route even more. A rush hour route would be highly interesting though.

We’re sure to get volumetric exhaust smoke from the game’s diesels which DTG will say is so realistic we can almost smell it. The cash loaded fans will want it before it’s even released, and will duly get on their knees in the direction of Chatham and praise the (very expensive) God Dovetail.

We really need to be on random routing and events by now, smoke fog and pianos don't feel they are worth paying extra for even if the dev team have spent all year on them.

I'm rather hoping they go for a similar pricing/packaging model that we've seen before where those who want to upgrade from 4 to 5 can do so by buying just one of the new routes at the usual £25-30 price point (depending on size of route).

I expect a three country bundle US/UK/DE and looking at the roadmap additional layers/content for each of those routes plus possibly a bonus route as part of a Deluxe £60-70 offering. Or the chance to have the whole lot if you sign up to a subscription for a year for £120 which would include all DTG releases plus one third party product.

Several posts on, this is all still pure speculation. Some of it may turn out to be true but, at this point, it's nothing more than conjecture. Surely you've all got something more important to do or worry about.
