That's down to the track unevenness setting each route or even each track section has set. Niddertalbahn is quite bumpy. Other routes are more smooth.
Thanks for the ping Vern, I don't usually visit this part of the forum! I must admit its been a hectic few days and the last thing I have wanted to be doing after getting in is playing with 801s in TSW, but my plan is to give it a go tomorrow and see how it is. I haven't read through the thread, but from your post it's important to bear in mind the difference between the cab and saloon, because they certainly feel different.
I don't think the SRM 185.2 is working. Couldn't see any movement. Otherwise I like it, maybe it could be a little more refined with some more movement, and less abrupt sometimes when passing over points it feels like it's bottoming out rather than springing back to place. The coaching stock on the Blackpool DLC seems to have nailed it though. Wonderful on jointed track.
Edit : Fixed (PS5), Just needed to turn on Camera Motion Sway in HUD & GAMEPLAY game settings. Well, then I’m quite dissapointed becouse there is really 0% cab movement when passing junctions, I was looking forward for presented effect like in roadmap videos. if there is no in-cab bouncing movement for 185 and ÖBB Talent (on all routes except Niddertalbahn) like presented in promo video, the whole thing is kinda useless for PS5 German content players? Or just to roleplay placebo effect that something is happening down there and I can watch it through external camera (when 98% of time I use incab camera)… I saw some reels on Instagram today where some UK EMU was driving through junctions and cab was litteral bouncing like 15-cm up and down. So UK has bad quality rails and junctions, and DE (expect Nidder) has profi smooth high quality rails?
My verdict so far. Overall, it’s really good and an improvement to the simulation and overall experience and immersion. And I’m glad it’s finally out even it’s only on a few trains. There is room for improvement though of course. Firstly, JT have nails suspension on their stock (Class 47, 142 and 08) no complaints from me, both vertical and lateral movement is to my liking and they all look and behave how I’m imagine they should. For DTG, still room for improvement. I’ve noticed a lack of lateral moment which I’ve mention before and others have also pointed out too, there needs to be a balance of the two. The Class 380 I think is a little too aggressive as low speeds and the 801 may be a little aggressive with the bounce at high speeds, Class 66, 4024 and 185.2 are fine but the Rosenheim Doppelstock is missing it’s suspension. I also heard in another thread called ‘track unevenness’ maybe consider tweaking this in future route to see how new trains react to its effects?
I drove PAD-RDG on GWE with a Blackpool 47, there was hardly any cab movement. I don't know whether it was the same as before or just very subtle - hard to tell. Also spawning the 47 to drive DON-RET on ECML was no cab movement again.
I fixed “suspension movement not working in cab” on my PS5 TSW4, if anyone struggling too you need to turn on Camera Motion Sway in HUD & GAMEPLAY game settings. DB BR 185.2 now feels like a real thing, love it!
The accelerometer in the HUD is reacting to every bounce that the suspension simulation creates. I’m not sure it should be doing that as it shouldn’t really be reacting to up and down movements. It is therefore often giving incorrect acceleration and deceleration readings and is quite distracting having it bounce all over the place. Maybe this hasn’t been spotted during development if the devs have been using the mini HUD and not the regular one. Observed on PS5.
Yes it’s similar to wheel slip behavior of accelerometer, but much faster. I guess its a milisecond when wheel is off the rail in the gap over junction and spins faster for a moment, not sure if it’s corrensponds to reality cause in that moment all other wheels are sitting on rail. I can confirm it’s disturbing.
I was going to say. You mean the blue bar at the top or yellow if you accelerate and decelarate etc. I think I know what you mean. It does bounce around for me.
I had a go with the 801 this evening and I must say on the whole it is done rather nicely and I have no issues with the movement at high speed as they are not the smoothest ride up front by any means, like most locos and units, and if anything I thought it were a tad smoother than I were expecting (I may have cracked why this is later on in the post!). Of course, it isn't perfect and it seems to be a more general up and down consistently across the route, rather than there being sections of the route which ride rougher and other sections which are smoother but it can't be expected for them to put every single bump in the game. It does feel incredibly weird but I don't think this is the criticism of the implementation, but the fact I am not moving as it is not only a visual sensation but the actual feeling of the movement, which could explain what I said about it feeling a bit too smooth. The only thing which really stuck out to me were going over points at lower speeds is that it is a bit too much of a sudden and dramatic jolt and feels really disconnected from how it reacts on other sections of track. As mentioned this could be related to the fact that not only am I not moving, but neither is the in game camera position, as we do in real life. On first impression after a quick run it is not too shabby at all, I'd imagine I could think of a load more to say come the morning, but I reckon that is it for now! Just quickly I thought I'd mention the 47 too, as that looked lovely too and not as over the top on points at slower speeds and was a clear difference between jointed and CWR sections, as per the Pacer. Also, looking out the window down the train the MkIIs seemed to be bobbing up and down more naturally, though I don't know if they have had work or my mind's playing tricks. Glad to see suspension spring into the game and even happier to see it will be a standard feature going forward. Oh and on an unrelated note I see that the 801 had the rear pan raised, hadn't realised this had been corrected as I haven't used the route in months (there were various other moments I had like this too where clear fixes have been added), but good to see it done nonetheless. Looking at it in comparison to other TSW routes, and not being nit picky, it is a well done route, just a shame about the OHNS not working and the level crossing timings playing with the signals, which are very blatant errors. Sorry, I'll stop waffling along now, and I do apologise for any grammatical errors, or unclear wording as I am shattered as broken glass after today.
I've not had a whole lot of time to play the game since the update but from what I have played I've enjoyed the new suspension especially on the 47 with the MK 1s and 2s bobbing around. Just wondering how come the other variants of locos (66, 08, 323 & 47) didn't get suspension added as well?
Suspension is brilliant for me! Worth the wait in my opinion. I just wish it could be added to more stock.
Initially had mixed feelings about it but comparing it to driving stock without the suspension, the difference is suddenly very noticeable. A worthy change and I'm looking forward to all of the new content including it in the future. (I've so far tried it on the Class 801, 380 and 47, all of which I thought were convincingly good - 380 is very bumpy over the points on the way in and out of Glasgow Central!).
Looking at the Class 801's suspension, one thing struck me as kinda odd. There is a piston, one part of which is connected to the frame (red highlight), and the other to the bogie (orange highlight). But they're disconnected from each other, and as a result, clipping (arrow) is constantly happening whenever the bogie is turned or under compression. This cannot be an oversight, as it becomes obvious within 1 second of looking at the suspension working. Indeed, it's very apparent even in the promotional video (at 1:57, for example):
Ever since the update came out I can't even do a full run on the lner keeps lagging then going of back to main menu screen
It’s always been like this unfortunately. The only train where this isn’t a problem is BR 612 because it tilts
Yes, suspension update didn't include remodelling trains to make all the animation and linkages work - for some of the trains that's quite a sizeable job because of how they were built. We want to get there for new trains though. Matt.
Sorry, but why would there be a need to "remodel" the 801 at all? Suspension was a headlining TSW4 feature, and now you're saying that a train that's front and center on its cover art wasn't built with suspension in mind to begin with and requires "quite a sizeable job" to "make all the animation and linkages work". That's kinda odd. There are 100+ trains in TSW4 (and probably 2-3x as many variants). This update added suspension to 9 variants. Perhaps, and I'm trying to be nice here, promising this feature "within the first few months after launch" wasn't particularly wise.
Simple. That train was built maybe a year before suspension existed at all as a feature. You're totally right. It absolutely wasn't wise. But I can't wind the clock back. Suffice to say, suspension has not gone as expected at all. It's had a lot of problems along the way. Matt.
I think its just enabled when you turn on AWS, you can hear the hissing as soon as you get out the seat. Either its on by default or toggled with aws.
I played Limestreet to Liverpool with the Jubilee last night after forgetting about the suspension update as no trains I drive lately have it. The Jubilee at 20 mph going over points is just insane and not in a good way. I won't be going back to it. Steam locos were just passable is the game as it is, with the suspension update it's like driving on the ballast. Won't be touching it again. Have a toggle on off option for the suspension or remove it fully until it's working right. Only the 142 has decent working suspension right now.
The LMS Jubilee has not had its suspension upgraded. None of the steam locomotives have. What you're experiencing is the track's internal "roughness" property, which has always been set rather high on most of the SoS route. Look at the wheels when going over switches. They're not dipping down into the gaps. Then look at the wheels when going over seemingly straight track at speed. They're jumping around like mad. For outright hilarity, set the "Camera Motion Sway Level" to 200%.
Think I mentioned this here or somewhere else. Steam locos *have* been adversely affected by the suspension update for some weird reason - physics guy has submitted a fix for it and it's being tested, but no, the behaviour you're seeing is not expected and will be fixed so it runs as before. Matt.
We know steam locos haven’t had any suspension changes but the core changes to the game included in the suspension improvements update has caused some unwanted changes to how the steam locos react to the roughness of the track and that’s what the posts about it are referencing. They were always bouncy but now they are impossibly mobile in all different directions.
"some weird reason", right. Instead of thorough QA?? Do I assume correctly there is a difference between 6DoF "camera sway motion" physics and actual mechanical "sway motion" physics? Which is generated by Simugraph and acts on the player's virtual head? How is axle box, bogie frame, undercarriage (Class 142) and car body, driver's seat suspension generated, linked and damped for that 'ultimate in realism' driving experience? Unless the track is extremely poor, the mechanical "roll, pitch, yaw and bounce" should be very limited. Such extremely poor track should also look extremely poor. This is rather extreme, but most telephoto clips show trains doing the rock and roll, wobble and bounced routine, often in harmonic motion due to resonance and insufficient damping. Does the 'track unevenness' parameter have a visual effect even?
I thought I was going mad when driving the Scotsman earlier. It’s not completely unplayable but very bouncy at low speeds on ECML.
I like the update overall, going over junctions is much better now, but you can still feel this is rough on the edge, and imho requires futher improvement. I.e. the 801 looks like it has busted dampers, and I imagine having such motion IRL would really be nauseous for the passengers. Suspension should (to a degree) isolate the chassis from wheel movement, not induce weird oscillation... That would indicate bad damper design, as that is the whole purpose of dampers. And it obviously has issues with superelevation. I ran the class 66 yesterday on London Overground, starting near Gospel Oak, and the freight cars were vissibly moving around, even with the trail stopped.
I have been using the Class 801 alot recently and I have to say, I do really like the suspenion update, It adds more immersion to the drive and makes you feel like you are actually going over junctions. Im looking forward to seeing it on future trains.
It's a shame the 710 hasn't got suspensions as Aventra trains usually have a lot of character when they bounce up and down. The 710 would have worked well with suspensions
The coaches on BPO seemed to move quite realistically. The head out of carriage window view reminded me of railtours from the 80s (steam hauled) ( I usually use scenario planner in BPO to avoid the blue screen crashes PS4)
Please someone from DTG can you confirm you willing to fix broken BR 185.2 after suspension update, cab 2 doesn’t have any traction above 2km/h, can’t complete scenarios and some timetable rides which require usage of cab2. Problem mentioned in this topic
After another run with the 801 on ECML, this time in daylight, definitely feel the bounce is a tad overdone. Nodding away like a Class 142 when in reality on relatively smooth welded rail should be more in the way of lateral motion.
As i've said many times, a high speed ride in a Javelin was anything but smooth, on some of the newest high speed rail in the UK. The cab is different. Matt.
Tried all of my current suspension enabled collection on various routes I own. I'm satisfied completely with it. Doesn't need work or tweaking. Does show the 710 needs updating for the suspension on the goblin line though DTG team. Try Azuma on the south east line after running the ECML, don't change it;spot on. Thanks all.
I agree. The suspension is fine as it is. The original Steam physics from TSW2 were probably fine as well (I can't remember and am not an expert), but I suspect the community probably found it too hard, asked for it to be changed, and now we have the current physics. I hope suspension doesn't go the same way.
Only returned to train simulator after a 15 year break recently. Unfortunately missed the steam physics being simpler after player's feedback. I'm aware everyone has been waiting for the suspension update to become a reality . A great example for everyone; Watched Dan Cruickshank in Riding Britain's railways episode 2 Tunnel revolution. He's sat on a Class 43 service in the jump seat being filmed. The cameraman pans to the driver a few times, after watching that ,I was satisfied DTG had got it right. Those dissatisfied; please take a look at the documentary. Don't have a problem with those that want the option to turn it off, fair to have the option. Hopefully won't be spoilt,by nit picking.
The only problem is that I now notice the difference when I drive a train without suspension. It really adds to the immersion
