Thank you DTG for making the core update free. I guess all the criticisms of yearly paid updates paid off. This was the right thing to do
As has been noted by the (really positive, thank you everyone!) response so far, this is a big departure from what we've previously done. We need to be able to see if it works for us - both practically and financially. We felt the 30 days (plus also GamePass for Xbox players) gave people enough time to upgrade.
I'm going to ask a stupid question, just to make sure that I understand it poorly...... when I have almost all the German maps in TSW4, vehicles, etc., I download the TSW5 Starter Pack for free on the PlaystationStore, which is actually a bare TSW5 simulator without maps and will I be able to continue driving? Or if I decided to buy TSW5 straight away, e.g. Deluxe, I no longer need the Free Starterpack TSW5 and I will still have all the DLC (TSW4) available for free in the TSW5 version? Thank you!
You cannot just copy your old content across...they will all need to be re-downloaded for TSW5 I will join the chorus of praise to DTG for offering this option (albeit for a limited time)
TSW5 Starter Pack does not modify your TSW 4 installation at all. When you get a TSW 5 version, be it the Starter Pack, Standard, Deluxe or Special Edition, you will have to download all your existing TSW DLCs for it.
No. The package you get for TSW 5 is not the same one you have in TSW 4, even if it is for the same route and visually it looks the same to you.
I'm not sure how re-download and copy are the same thing....they couldn't be any more different Anyway....yes, you do get all your owned content in TSW5 (With the exception of the old and now long forgotten NEC:NY route)
Thank you for the answer, I understood the fact that I have to download all the DLC again in the version for TSW5 ..... my question should have been a little different, but that's probably because English is not my hobby )) I was wondering, if FreeStarterPack TSW5 will actually be a full simulator of TSW5only without new DLC (TSW5).
Is there any thoughts on TSW5 addons being made as shared addons? It won’t affect older games and the game will be upgraded so it wouldn’t matter if it did break older ones
I think this is not possible due to how the console distributors handle their stores. Afaik only Steam can do this (package containing multiple DLC entitlements, like the shared European Loco & Asset Pack or JustTrains CommonLibrary). Not to be confused with a bundle containing multiple packages. (eg. three routes)
Looking at the chart, using the free starter core with my existing routes from TSW4/3/2 etc(3rd column); - No achievements? Also route hopping and improved track shadows on "new and enhanced routes only"? All my routes will be old won't they? Appreciate any help.
Yes, someone can buy TSW 5 Starter Pack (without owning any previous TSW4 version) and will get just the Training Center and the trains that are in it. That person would then need to buy additional routes separately if he/she wants them.
All your routes will be the best versions available, if they get fixes or even a remaster you will have that.
You might want to read this about the achievements in TSW5. Yes, your routes would be "TSW 5 compatible", as DTG calls them.
So please tell me your working closely with Sony to make it better? Currently with TSW4, if I download a DLC it automatically downloads PS4 version as well as PS5 version despite only having the PS5 version installed. On top of that if its a TSW3 DLC then it automatically downloads TSW3 PS4, PS5 version, TSW4 PS4, PS5 version. Now with TSW5, it will do all of those plus the TS5 PS4 and PS5 version. Theres got to be a better way, although I do understand this is most likely a Sony fail.
The track shadows is not a dynamic thing in so far as just calculating shadows on whatever route - it's an effect that is added to the track material that gives the same effect without the costly calculation of shadows, but this then needs to be added to each route. We have added it to most of the routes that are included up to the special edition - so some of the compatible collection will have them, not just the three new ones. We'll supply a full list of which routes have it later. The point is - because it requires a non-trivial change on each route, it's not there on all routes. Matt.
Can someone write an ELI5 on what this actually means? I already have TSW2020, TSW2 and TSW4, and bunch of additional routes and extra locos.
l don’t see the point of a free update. You are going to have to buy TSW5 if you want to play the game. If it was a free update to TSW4 l could understand.
So, I get the starter pack and I can play ALL the TSW content I own just by getting the starter pack and not buying the actual TSW5 game?
You own TSW2020, TSW2, and TSW4, plus some DLC. Good start point, and thank you. You get the FREE starter pack. It costs nothing, and it adds an entry to your system thats called "Train Sim World 5" very much like the others did (except with a different number). You can now boot that game up, and all your DLC, including all the routes from TSW2020, TSW2 and TSW4 will appear inside Train Sim World 5 and you can play them there. If you buy a standard/deluxe/special edition, same applies, your existing content all comes across. In all cases, your profile comes across too if you want to import it. Matt.
No, you get TSW5 for free in your library. You can then install all your owned DLC and play them on the new TSW5 engine.
You only have to buy it if you want the routes. If you don't want the routes, but want to have the new features and be able to buy DLC that comes out later (like JT's Shap route) then you just need the free edition now and there's no need to buy anything at all. Matt.
Yes. With the exception of NEC:NY from TSW2020. That one is not compatible but everything else will work fine.
Hi Matt, thanks for the explanation! Yeah, big fan of your trains and routes. Okey, this sounds AWESOME! I was curious whether to get on with TSW4, as I'm still playing TSW2 because of trophy hunting, but now I may just go straight to TSW5 with everything I have! Great stuff!
I just went to the PS Store and the only options currently are the pre-orders for actual games. How do I enlist for the starter pack? Do I need to have TSW4 installed and do the latest update?
Nothing to pre-order for the starter pack, just wait for it to release on launch day and download it. Matt.
On PS5, hover over the game in the top menu (where your installed games are listed when you first boot up) and press Option. Then select Manage Game Content, which will display all your available DLC/Add-Ons for the game. If you download from there, you will only get the PS5 version. You can also delete DLC/Add-Ons from the same menu. Downloading DLC from seemingly anywhere else in the PS ecosystem will pretty result in getting the PS4 version as well, as you well know!
Since I am so often critical of DTG it seems appropriate to congratulate for a job well done. The free starter pack is an excellent idea. The freedom to only pay for the content I want is like a breath of fresh air. I do feel like they have listened to some of their most vocal critics in order to enact positive change, which is not an easy thing to do. Before today I was apprehensive about what would happen and thought I might have to consider leaving TSW. Now I am glad to have stuck around. I think some trust has been rebuilt. At least, to me it has. Looking forward to more great train experiences. Thanks DTG.
I wasn't referring to TSW5. I was implying now that TSW5 is a free update, it could remove the need for a TSW6 to be a seperate game. So I hope TSW5 is the last time we need to redownload our whole library of DLC.
Really good news, I was worried that it would be requiring to buy the game again with routes I dont want just to get the new features.
It probably won't. Console stores "hide" older games. 2 Years of TSW5 would mean that console players will only be exposed to the TSW franchise once in two years. Not even the DLC will make it to the front page of console stores. Only owners of the game will be notified about new routes in "stories about your game" on PS5. Not sure how Xbox works these days.
So if I go for the starter pack but at a later point decide that I want the routes included in the standard edition, do I have to buy each route separately, or can I still purchase the standard edition for £ 50 ?
A little late to the party but hey- Personally I think 30 days is more than sufficient time to claim the free upgrade starter pack. You don’t need to install it within those 30 days - you could literally just log steam or Xbox or whatever your relevant platform is and just claim it and add it to your account. It’s what I did with both the LGV Promotion offer and the initial launch of TSW on Epic store when it was free for a short time
This may be a silly question, but as someone who has TSW4 and pretty much all of the currently available DLC's for it, which TSW5 version should I get to ensure I get all of the new stuff without paying for routes etc that I already own?
You could either get the Standard Edition to get the three new routes, or the Deluxe Edition to get the Pendolino and Flixtrain Vectron and ignore the fact that you already have Cajon Pass. The Vectron will sell for £12.99 and the Pendolino for £14.99 separately, so the Deluxe Edition may still give you value for money, depending on what you are looking for.
You can buy any of the other editions (Standard/Deluxe/Special Edition) later. In fact, DTG will be very happy if you do.
Get the Deluxe edition. This one includes all the new stuff. Yes, it also includes Cajon Pass that you probably own already, but you are still saving money by buying the new content this way.
The standard, deluxe and special editions will remain on sale (as indeed the TSW4 ones are still) so you can always take advantage of those packs, or you can purchase individually if you prefer. You should never have to pay for routes you already own. I guess the only exception to that is when they are part of a bundle package, in which case you can decide for yourself if the deal is still right for you based on the fact you already own them. From where you are - you could go: Starter Pack - free, all your content comes across, you get none of the new content ,but you also don't pay a penny. You get to benefit from new features where the routes you have support them. Standard - All new content, pay for that, everything comes over, and you get three brand new routes. Deluxe - Mostly new content - if you own Cajon Pass already, you just need to decide for yourself if the upgrade in cost from std -> deluxe is still good value for you based on the two locos included and how much you'll use them. Special edition - again, depends on whether it's got enough new content for you vs the price of buying that content individually and how much of that content you want. Matt.
