Does anyone no what the limitation is?
I was going to buy the deluxe edition but considering I already own everything and will only be gaining 2 routes, one of which I don't want, 59.99 seems like a waste of money for me.

So it would make sense to get the free upgrade and just buy wcml and the pendolino or have dtg made it so I will have no choice to buy the standard or deluxe if I want all the core updates?

Okay. So I believe this has caused confusion for a lot of people but I will try sum it up simply:

The Starter pack is not listed as having all of the core new features because essentially the starter pack is just the training centre with a selection of stock - thus making things like guard mode irrelevant as it wouldn’t normally function on training centre anyway. I believe this was done this way to not mislead any newcomers.

If you get the free upgrade and port all of your existing TSW addons over, I believe features like quick jump, enhanced display screens and route hop etc will be functional (providing you own the relevant addons to jump between routes) with the exception of track shadows, which I believe is TSW5+ and remasters only.

Guard mode will currently not be compatible for previous TSW Content. It will only be compatible with the newer TSW5 routes, and presumably any routes that receive a future remaster, such as the upcoming GWE remaster. I believe DTG have no plans to make all their older content compatible with guard mode, but as always, they may do so with some.

If you’re only interested in the free upgrade and buying the WCML and Pendolino separately - I would strongly think that you would have access to the core features as essentially you would have the same game as those who bought the Deluxe version. The only difference being that you would have bought the addons separately, whereas those who ordered the Deluxe and Special editions got them in a bundle

If you get the free starter pack, you get all the new TSW5 features (providing you have the correct trains available), you just won't get any of the three core routes (WCML etc) unless you buy them separately.

  4. The first few minutes of this DTG video should clarify it for you. Short version, you can buy separately is my understanding.

They answered this in the stream last night. If you get the free edition it only comes with the core game and training centre. If you only install your previously owned content then you won’t get the latest TSW 5 features. If you decide to buy some TSW 5 DLC then it’ll come with the appropriate features.

Basically you’re not missing out on anything by getting the free version. The only reason they say it doesn’t come with all the core features is because it only comes with the training centre which doesn’t use the all of new features. If you just want specific DLC then it’s the best way to go, and you’ll not lose out on any of the new core features.

I think they also mentioned that buying the Deluxe edition is still cheaper than buying wcml and the pendolino separately

I think it depends where you’re from.

In the UK, you can get the free version of the core game for free (Surprise!)
If the pricing remains unchanged from recent releases, I imagine the WCML alone will be £30 with the Pendolino being confirmed at £14.99, totalling £45 which is cheaper

    Possibly.
Getting the deluxe or special editions is definitely cheaper if you don’t have any of the previous content and want it all - this includes all the US and German content, but I think if you’re solely interested in one country such as the Pendolino and WCML it’s cheaper to buy separately

FYI; the price for all the new locos and routes is listed here in the FAQ if you want to buy them seperately after launch.

I shall be getting the free core update and playing all my current stuff, plus GWR remastered (which has me excited), until prices drop enough for WCML and 390. Will be something to look forward to.

Thanks guys that's cleared that up. Didn't realise there is a new us route also included in the bundle.
