Upcoming Release Tsw5 First Look - San Bernardino Line

It shows San Bernardino scenery (Sherman Hill required) on the 1st video interesting.

I though Cajon Pass would be needed for San Bernardino scenery as Sherman Hill is not near California.

 

Sherman hill provides the Union Pacific freight consists for the AI layer

LATC yard near LAUPT and the mainline over the Metrolink tracks near San Bernadino are UP tracks, so they need UP stock to add in AI for them.

San Bernardino itself, and the tracks that most of the Metrolink trains run are have BNSF freight active on it.

Its actual a positive I see with DTG with San Bernardino, they kept the correct operators on the correct lines, and not did the dumb mixing of stock that was done for AVL. +1 for this route.

Only real complaint is that the manifests on the UP main are still too uniform, but at least it looks somewhat promising...

 

Its already looking better to me than WCML. Lets see how the stream goes first though before I say for sure.

But pretty good so far. And my expectations are the route looks good because it is a light timetable in real life.

But interesting how there is a weekday and weekend timetable. Instead of it just on one and activating only if you pick a weekend date from the sounds of it.

 

I just can’t get excited about this. The highway section worries me immmensly we still have cars with no shadows, wrong models, wrong road markings, unrealistic movement, pop in and the list goes on.

Should we close our eyes on certain portions of tracks?

 

Gen 8 should of stopped being supported along time ago imo they just can't handle it

 

According to Sony's own financial statements, as of 31 March 2024, they have 118 active users, their PS5 install base is exactly half that at 59 million. DTG aren't going to cut off potentially half of their console revenue when all they have to do is cull parts of the timetable.

It's also worth noting that the minimum PC specs are broadly in line with Gen 8, move those minimums up to Gen 9 specs and you cut off a lot of PC players too.

Having said that, it's long overdue for DTG to move the graphics needle upwards for those on high end PCs, but they could easily do that without cutting Gen 8.

 

I must admit, those comparison shots are pretty nice.

 

They are not that exact though and lacking a bit of dirt, grit and weathering.

Well if you are going to do a dedicated route and go for realism then things need to be as close as possible. We arnt living in the age of playstation 2 are we?

There are many valid criticisms of TSW and DTG, but those station comparisons aren't one of them- they look fantastic.

Ah we can't have people being upset over criticism of their precious train game can we? To answer above, ive been playing games since the early 80s. We are living in the age of graphic fidelity and power with some fantastic engines to build assets from.

Just for example, Baldwin park looking at this pictures are missing trees along the track and the buildings don't look exact. There's also missing fencing. Why can't the details be exact, why are they approximations?

Rialto is missing fencing, the light is on the wrong side of the fencing, the light looks smaller too, the building itself is missing detailing on the windows and the door. I mean I could go on. I thought the idea of building a route was to bring that immersion to the sim. You can forgive distance details but stations and trackside?

 

What do you expect? It's brand new.

I’m quite excited for this as I really enjoy driving the Baby Bullet on Peninsula Corridor and the main thing stopping me from playing Antelope more often are the tedious and slow canyon bits (which aren’t on this new route). Stations look great, just hope they’ve done the Speedway justice since they’ve mentioned it quite often and are using it for scenarios.

 

Yes, let's hope so. They built scenarios around Yankee Stadium and Belmont Park but you'd be hard- pressed to see either of them in game.

 

I have to say that, so far, this route looks better than WCML which is a shame as I was, and still am, looking forward to WCML.

 

I had a xbox one when i had bought TSW Founders Edition and the gameplay was very very stuttered. After some months i fortunately bought a xbox one X and it was very better. I think this last one is the only console of 8th generation can play on TSW. But i had just some issue with few TSW4's routes.
The gameplay on xbox one and xbox one s must be very annoying.

 

Yeah I am a fan of AVL, but I find sometimes I am all in at the start but by the time I get to Lancaster I am like thank god this service is finally over. This route looks like all the good bits of AVL crossed with Caltrain and they did a great job on the scenery and updated rolling stock from what I can see.

Can't wait for this one. Between this and the new Boston route it should be a good few months for people like me who love diesel loco hauled US commuter stuff.

I have been using computers since the days of dip switches to put in the address of the boot strap code on 8 bit machines and am well aware of the progress that has been made.

 

Overall this route looks good and it's nice to have both types of Metrolink passenger car running together to form mixed consists.

 

I wouldn't buy this route or also i would not but AVL.
It's just not my 'type of route'

So it was quite a good call to put them into the game upgrades.

There are moments i really can enjoy AVL (even full lenght), although rarely
The preview of the new one was actually quite wonderful and i'm happy i'll own it.

Just like the other one i won't drive it that often but when i do, it'll be wonderful
(this is just personal preference)

so it’s not important for scenery to be of a high standard on a train sim? Right gotcha. Maybe they should just do fictional routes then? I mean I was under the impression the beauty was in the diversity of the routes, the landmarks, the stations, the traffic, the whole kit and caboodle? Never mind then.

 

Watched around 20 minutes of the SB stream so far. I will always give credit when credit is due. So far, I’m largely impressed with the SB DLC, it’s looking and sounding fantastic and I’m loving the Airbus planes already.

I’ll reserve full judgement until I’ve managed to watch the whole stream, which will likely be tomorrow.

Biggest criticism so far. The roads look iffy in places either with their layout, or the lighting causing a problem. Also, the flying cars absolutely ruin the whole experience. They need sorting urgently. Given such a big deal has been made about mid-highway running, why cars are flying is simply baffling at this point. Maybe this is addressed later on in the stream, but if not - what the actual heck.

 

Literally though like I'd say DTG were really shining through with those comparisons. Route looks good visually.

 

So you are stating the assets depicted in the comparisons pictures are not good enough for you? If they aren’t, I feel you will be never satisfied.

They are not accurate. You can see it in the comparison photos. And no I’m not satisfied with stations with missing assets like fences and wrong placements, missing trees and missing/innacurate building details. We don’t get this stuff for free.

 

I don’t normally like US routes, just because I have no connection to them. I did think the preview looked good though and it makes me want to give this route a chance. I thought the comparison shots were excellent.

Looks like the route does suffer from the usual TSW Issues but hopefully, at least on PC, the modders will work their magic with ini files.

The only thing that really concerns me is that on both streams so far, there has been a lot of audio glitches. I’m hoping that that was just the stream and not the game. It was driving me mad and for certain I could not put up with that.

Still intending to pre order deluxe. The fact that this looks nice gives me faith that the German route will be good as well.

I think my strategy will be to pre order on Steam, but try the Gamepass version first. Then if that seems good I can proceed with downloading all my DLC in Steam (keeping my TSW 4 installed until at least the basic mods are confirmed as working). I’m on holiday anyway so the early access doesn’t really matter.

Ignoring the technical difficulties experienced on the stream:

Ballast Shadows popping in need addressing - worse than previous routes?
Floating cars on the highway sections - why preview a route with this?
Cars popping in and out on the highways - this wasn't draw distance, this was a implementation fault.
The route nearly crashed Matt's PC twice - hopefully this was a shaders related issue.

I thought Matt and Eddie did a good job showing off the route.

 

Shadows and popping scenery - especially trees as you get nearer - definitely need more work.
Also, the ballast shadow on SB (as others have mentioned) really negates the rail shadow improvements.

 

In the stream, Eddie talks about the horn sequencer. Are there boards on the track to tell you when to press it? I couldn’t see any on the stream.

 

Hard to tell as they decided to do each run with the sun positioned to be shining head on to the train, which put all the signs into a shadow, and also I felt made everything orange and shadow dense, not sure why that was chosen, also multiple runs in November when vegetation would not be at its fullest seemed a weird choice.

 

I thought overall it was quite good there's a few issues which can be sorted but the route looks alot better than WCML the night lighting was good also

 

The scenery deficits like floating cars, vehicles cruising through closed crossings, popping visuals etc. are not likely to be fixed, they are still present on AVL and CJP years after release as far as I know. The disturbing thing for me is that neither DTG Harry, DTG Matt nor Eddie chose to mention any of these very obvious issues while they were happening right in front of them.

I suspect that either Sam or Natalie would have drawn attention to them. But that was a different time and a different kind of stream.

Sorry, but I just don't believe we should be accepting these problems as " just the way it is " 7 years into the game.

The route looks right up my alley. Someone else pointed out the similarity in service to Peninsula Corridor, which is my favorite route in terms of the actual driving. I appreciate some people's issues with graphics glitches buy in my opinion that's at best a secondary concern to the timetable, scenery, route vibe, etc.

Also I'm utterly charmed by the way Harry says "Conductor Mode" and feel they should work it into the game somehow.

 

Auto Club is still under the 2 mile format. It needs to be a short track. Nice job of lack of research

 

Yes, there are whistle boards before most road crossings, and where there are multiple crossing close together the board shows a "x-" where '-' is the number of crossings the sign applies too. They are not very big, so not hard to miss with all the other similar sized sighs along the RoW. Now, if these are placed so the sequencer works if pressed when passing the sign, don't have an idea.

 

The track may not even exist in the future at this point, I rather have it present when it was still hosting races, basically in its 2.0 mile configuration.

 

Nice to watch a stream not on phone for a change.
Looked varied and detailed.
Enjoyed it and the aviation has proper flight paths, lovely.

AVL has "X" signs which are the indicators to start sounding horn. I am guessing that is where someone would press the sequencer. I am assuming that San Bernardino uses the same although I wasn't looking out for them. Keep in mind they are very small compared to UK whistle boards.

And super happy to have Eddie explain the fact that Metrolink has a delay on their sequencer when under 45mph.

For the last year, I thought the sequencer was broken on the F125 because sometimes when I pressed it, it worked. Other times it didn't, then it would randomly go off a while later. I thought it was bugged.

Turns out all along it works exactly how he explained: when you are over 45mph it sounds immediately, when you are under 45mph it will sound after about a 15 or 20 second delay. What I thought was a bug was realism.
