Yeah if you like late steam/early diesel (it's late 1950s/early 1960s timeframe) in a rural setting it's nice. There are "unlocks" to work towards to open up more track and upgrade (mostly with in-game money you earn from maintaining contracts with businesses along the routes) It feels a bit more "role play" than other games. Not talking to people, but in unlocking things and interacting with businesses and running passenger routes, etc. It's that extra step that TSW doesn't have, which is more an A-B service, but as I said you can't do RR in an hour either. It's one map, set number of trains and rolling stock. Also it CAN be multi-player (although I haven't played it that way yet) I know this is a thread about TSW 5, but I think it's important to set comparisons to compare it TO, not JUST the ideal of "perfect" which is frankly unattainable in a game/sim. It'll never be "perfect" to everyone. We have different expectations. Console players are kinda screwed in this regard since most train content isn't on console, so TSW becomes that catch-all with a monopoly on console as far as I know. Is there extra focus on TSW because it's the "only game in town" for most of it's playerbase? Console players don't have those other outlets to find other stuff outside of TSW. So if they can't get steam or something on TSW then it's a "total failure"? Whereas PC players can just load up a different game and get that content there when they want it. It does seem to put some rather unrealistic expectations and hopes on TSW which if it can't make everyone happy all the time is then desperately criticized harshly. Some of this DTG brings on themselves with unrealistic timeframes and promises of course.
There's not really a meaningful roadmap as far as I can tell, just the endless conveyer belt of DLC..
That does sound like my cup of tea! I'll probably add it later. Thought provoking post too. Definitely fortunate being on PC for this genre!
Enjoy man! I don't play it as much as I'd like because you get sucked into it and can spend hours at a session if you're not careful. The branch line pace is slower and it's your own pace so I can lose a few hours on a Sunday to it. Put some music on, have a cold beverage and ride the rails. If you have any questions, just ask. TSW is more of my after work "I have an hour or so to get a run in." There's just a sense of satisfaction from building a consist, dropping off to 6 industries along the line, picking up empties and coming back to the depot and seeing money in the bank at the end of the day that you can't get in TSW. But that's not really what TSW is built for, and I think it does a good job of being what it is.... an A-B trip sim with lots of variety. Maybe I should start a thread for other RR games in the "Off Topic" section.
Xbox controllers have no bearing on the use of haptic feedback on the PS5. Every other PS5 game I've played has haptic feedback set up correctly regardless of the games being cross-platform releases. I have gone and modified the haptic feedback settings now that I've found them, but it still doesn't work properly. I genuinely think they have no idea how the system works, because the reason for the very existence of the PS5's haptic feedback is to avoid what DTG have done. Every action feels the same - the vibration may be stronger or weaker, but you can't tell them apart. Any DTG employee who plays a PS5 game that has it set up correctly (most of them) will see the obvious issues with the haptic feedback in TSW. It is no more advanced than the rumble that TS2013 added.
Massive? No. Flop? No, it's selling well and is certainly not the disaster that was the TSW4 launch. Of course, we'll see old content being broken again, more or less, over time.
I am finding it worse than TSW 4 in terms of reinstalling all our content and with every yearly release it’s going to be worse every year than the previous one if you continue to buy all the content. DTG have got to find a better way of dealing with this.
That's certainly true, but can't be changed unless they update the game in place, not making it a new app technically. I've let Steam do the stuff overnight and in the morning it was all installed. As long as the distributors (Steam, MS, Epic and Sony) are willing to play this entitlement transfer thing (which is not what they're laid out for, that's manual work), but DTG are known for that, being the first company to break the Steam store with RailWorks back then.)
They could probably have gotten away with not renaming/re-releasing TSW4 as TSW5, released the three routes when ready and actually planned and delivered some requested features in the by then ready for release core upgrade. I appreciate there's a lead time and dlc exist pretty much independently of what seems to be a largely mythical 'core', but other simulations seem to manage. DCS adds dlc over time and actual core upgrades that don't require every prior dlc being revisited. I suspect its a competency shortfall, or simply a case of short-termism.
I will not buy 5 because of DTG not fixing and adding things in older routes. Release and abandon, is getting old. Take for example, Peninsula Corridor scenery issues and silly overlooked GP38 problems, twin bay hoppers no longer has any graffiti or reporting marks, gone!! This garbage is acceptable? No! When it comes with the U.S. stuff, it's a joke. Lack of effort and time spent to polish the routes. Rush, rush, rush...then maybe fix a few things is not acceptable! No more money from me!
That's not entirely true. They are reworking older routes, and released a flood of patches for TSW4. WSR, SEH, DRA, GCC and now GWE are reworked. Just can't do everything at the same time while developing new stuff. Of course - waiting with a purchase until it's the game you want is rational.
Yeah you can use TSW4 as long as you want. Not sure if patches to the TSW 4 DLC will get the updates (I don't think so) so you'll have to download the TSW5 versions if you want those updates that do happen. But there's nothing stopping you from keeping that one if you want. Just make sure to get TSW5 freebie if you want to upgrade for free later. As long as it's in your library you should be good. You only miss out on routes released after TSW5 comes out since those I think will only be forward compatible.
But they're not gonna spend dev resources on a perpiheral only 1/3 of the playerbase can use. That doesn't make any sense.
No, not understanding what I'm saying. I have spent a lot of money on these games only to see the same practices, over and over again. I'm being biased because of being a fan of US content, but seems like it's getting the short end of the stick. I demand a quality game for these prices.
It's so frustrating having to keep downloading routes to transfer to a new game I know there's a problem with transferring stuff on Xbox this shouldn't be happening really
Train Sim Society (Pixelade - where's your nice logo gone? New one looks like AI generated with a strange "loco") apparently had all DLC downloaded within 30 minutes.
I you only like UK routes I would consider TSW5 indeed a flop. Have played now with all layers and what a huge contrast to the German route. Why even make UK routes if this is supposed to be the pride and joy of UK routes? How can a UK route be more boring than a US route in TSW?
Damn, just threw US routes under the bus. Or in this case, under the train. I like the US routes. I usually only play the US routes. But, I am American.
I dont consider it as a flop but I unfortunately have performance issues on the new German route. TSW4 ran fine on my system on highest settings but on the new route, I get constant stuttering (while the SSD light is blinking like crazy) and FPS drop from 60 to about 25. Then everything runs smoothly again. I know that it seems that shaders are built when driving on the route for the first time but meanwhile, I have driven a couple of trains back and forth and the stuttering continues. And it also does not matter if the settings are set to Ultra or to Low (including the lowest resolution possible): The performance is the same in both scenarios. Never had these issues in TSW 4.
It's a similar situation for me, but on Series X. However, what's frustrating is I can't complete some services. My first-ever time playing the route and the game closed due to a video memory error. Then, after finally finishing a few services - albeit with poor performance and frame-rate- - the game this time then just froze and closed to the Xbox dashboard. So annoying as I was really looking forward to this route!
After playing for a while - it's not a flop, especially because it's a free upgrade for TSW players. Did they do any better this time with TSW 5? Nah. It's the same. Unpolished, bug ridden. Same procedure as every year. But - despite that, it's not a flop solely because it's as I said, a free upgrade for TSW players. It would have been a flop if you had to buy it AGAIN.
I think there is a big memory related issue on gen9 atm. You can’t move the camera very far away from the train at all in some areas, before the ICE-T starts to get funky looking. I recall this texture blur issue being fixed on PS last year but it seems to be back in full force now.
I might check it out later, as I installed TSW5 but have continued my journey on an old route I was in the middle of. I have a RTX 4070 Super, so if it has performance issues, something is seriously wrong with the route development that needs to be fixed.
I am on PC and have only done the San Bernardino route from the new routes so far, but it looks great to me. Quick questions from a luddite: I can uninstall TSW4 from my computer now, correct? It wont make me lose my DLC now that I have updated all of that to TSW5?
I do have a 2070 Super and performance has usually never been an issue. I can also tell that my hardware seems not to be a problem because the game runs fine with 60fps but at some points starts to do something on my SSD which goes haywire without any reason. Sometimes it recovers but sometimes once the framerate goes down, it will be bad the rest of the route. I just played and it ran as smooth as can be but then frames started to drop at some point. I noticed that it happened after I opened the Steam Overlay - perhaps this can be an issue and I will try to switch the overlay off later. But it can also be coincidental.
You can delete TSW 4 now. All previously bought DLC for TSW 4 and its predecessors should have already been downloaded with TSW 5. If you are unsure, check if all DLCs are available in TSW 5: Right click on game -> Properties -> DLC
It could be the overlay... I never use that. I also have it installed on a M.2 card, so I'll see what happens if I get chance to hop onto that route later.
Been 25 hours since l started the download just past 40%, so should be able to play it again on Friday morning. All because of my slow internet at 1.1 mbs. Hopefully one day there will be superfast fibre in my area. I have bought everything, but if TSW6 is the same next year l will give it a miss, unless Metropolitan Line or Manchester to Crewe are in the game.
Might try disabling the Steam Overlay myself later, still getting micro stutters and pauses on the SBD even though second run. However that could just be the poorly optimised game engine.
It's Download Sim World for me as TSW 5 downloads at 162GB on 20mbps internet. However, I am sure you will debate whether TSW 6 is a flop before my download of TSW 5 is complete.
Managed to download some of my dlc onto TSW5 but obviously there's still a fair missing with the issue with Microsoft hope it's sorted soon
Just installed the free version as I heard DTG were going to re-master the GWR route, is that true? After installing it and 'aving a butchers all my routes are in there, is that it? I don't need to mess about getting all my stuff across? If so good job DTG. Haven't played it yet but the main menu screen looks a mess imo, is they a way of sorting it per region? As I said I got the free version, is it the same as the paid for versions or are you supposed to shell out more?
