Ah interesting didn't catch that part of the stream, though not sounding good at all. Even though it is an 'automatic' process it is still good practice to power down before to prevent any sort of jolt from the sudden cut of power and it requires driver input to do this! In actual fact her being a TM I would have thought she'd mention that herself, as when we got our new trains I didn't power down for one and never made that mistake again as it didn't provide me with a happy TM! So, I don't see why this should be an excuse at all. Though not for this thread so I'll shut my gob here.

How will the driving experience be on this route? Considering the low number of stations (the little branch they’re including basically doubles the amount), I’m kinda worried this will be an ECML 2.0 which gets boring after a few runs for most players. Or are there interesting gradients/curves, landmarks or service patterns to look forward to?

The Preston to Lancaster section is, admittedly, fairly unexciting. Attractive enough, but fairly flat, fairly straight, and with no intermediate speed restrictions. After that, though, the route is much more interesting. Running through dramatic scenery, there are lots of curves and changing of line speeds, and significant gradients in both directions, but particularly Northbound on the climb to Shap summit.

Although it’s true there are a fairly small number of intermediate stations on the mainline, the majority of trains stop at them (whereas on East Coast most trains don’t stop at the majority of intermediate stations), so those stops also add interest to the run.

The most interesting aspect, though - which in my view is the biggest way in which this route will be more interesting than Peterborough to Doncaster - is the motive power. The class 87 is very interesting to drive, with the tap changer controls making it a totally different driving experience, requiring you to think ahead much more than on other trains. The combination of this control system with the rapidly changing line speeds and gradients will make it a real driving challenge - I promise you won’t be bored.

I also think that having major railway centres and regular real-life crew-change points at both ends of the route - Preston and Carlisle - will give it a much more satisfying feel than Peterborough - Doncaster. Starting or ending a run at Peterborough, particularly, always feels a bit unsatisfying. Preston - Carlisle will feel like a ‘complete’ and realistic run.

Hopefully if enough of the Carlisle area is modelled we will get the various 9Txx trip workings with the 08 shunter to play with. There should also be freight traffic in and out of Hardendale and Harrisons Sidings on the main line.

Mention that as still tied myself in knots on the SimSig Carlisle 1979. Had to delete a couple of trains now as their engines just seemed to vanish!

IIRC the freight-only station avoiding lines were still running then.

Preston to Carlisle is one of my favourite journeys, gradients, curves, passing loops, Shap is famous for it's severe gradients. Locos will be worked hard.

This is going to be epic. Now we have the 390 and 350 it would be great if we could have a modern timetable too, set in 2018 with Avanti 390s and TPE 350s. I know they're not 350/4 but close enough.

    No, they closed in '84.

My very first run will be HUDless as I have driven the route many hundreds of times IRL and I'm looking forward to seeing how well the simulation replicates the feel of weight and power, and if all is correct.
The electrics will render the climbs irrelevant, but once we start using diesels (and steam challenges ), driving will be interesting.

It'll be interesting to hear whether the scenery is closely enough recreated for you to be able to maintain your orientation and pick out your real life braking points.

Yes, that's my thinking. It will also be interesting to see how well simugraph does with the physics, and I will also do a run in VR for full immersion.
    I can't wait ;)

So I'm guessing this route will be on sale next year, March ? More people are indoors during Winter months, so perhaps Winter is a good time to release the route , but it's more to do with getting the route to run well, rather than time of release.

Hopefully… This is the one route that might redeem TSW5 and keep it installed on the PC, well at least the components that will be required for any layers.

Still plodding through the SimSig Carlisle simulation and every time I got a WCML loco hauled express approaching Upperby on the Down, I can hear the rheostatic braking on the Class 87 spool up into that delightful scream which subsides as you start dropping down Platform 3 at Carlisle.

    New Dev update!

"In this route we’ve authentically recreated the 1986/1987 timetable using the correct working timetable and photographs of said services to provide as realistic an experience as possible, including formations and train lengths accurate as close as possible to that of the real trains."

Is this some kind of dig at recently released routes :D

Honestly, this is giving DTG a run for their money, makes the current WCML S look laughable in comparison

I’ve just read the latest dev update and taken a look at both the pics and video - that’s how you do nighttime lighting. Also it’s how you do a timetable.

It’s clear from this update that JT have put a lot of thought and care into this new route, and what is possible with TSW when a developer does this.

Have you seen the Timelapse video they posted? The night lighting looks spot on. It really does make the WCML south look laughable.

Edit. I’m wondering if the night Timelapse video is shade being thrown over the criticism over WCML night lighting.

Day one, full price purchase for me. You can see the effort and care that has gone into this already. I don't normally get excited for routes, but I am really, really looking forward to this.

Same here - this is the one bright light I can see in TSW's future. Will need to see what needs to be about to provide the layers, as a huge triage is looming for my TSW install.

By the looks of the 08 shunter at least some of the 9Txx trip working is included - great stuff.

The only issue with JT that I can see is that they're keeping people buying WCL for the layers :D

But I have to agree with what's been said. Loving the look of this the time lapse shows the care and detail going into the route! Really looking forward to this one! Hopefully DTG will take some notes.

Loving the layers list especially and all the interactions. Loving how typical this is becoming of JT content in TSW :D

Have they mentioned whether the 87 will come with a high-intensity headlight version too? I know they appeared in the 80s at some point, but my knowledge of pre-noughties is sketchy at best.

I really hope the hype is real for this! It looks stunning. My childhood memories are more early to mid 90s (NSE specifically) but I did spend many childhood hours at Bletchley and those memories must be 89-91 period. So the intercity rakes are bringing it all back. I'm honestly missing a good few of those needed routes for layers, so I know where my money is going in any upcoming Playstation sales.

I've been spending more time on BPO lately, don't know why. Something must be drawing me in.

I dunno... the 86 looks more "British". =-)
Like the rest of the locos up to that point (Class 47, Class 52, even class 66, etc)
None of them had sports car noses and they worked just fine!
Grandpa Duff doesn't appreciate the new kid's styling.
If the pug nose style worked since the 1950s, just keep using it!
    Haha.

"Are you sure this is right Mabel?"

"Its what the station master gave to us to announce Edna, we can't argue with him or he'll send us out to that hellhole Morecambe again to get Lancashire teacakes for all the management"

"Well if you're sure Mabel..." <into tannoy> "The train, er, transit now standing at, sorry on, platform 4, calling at M6 services only, will depart once the driver works out how to get it back to the road"

I know the route itself isn’t out yet, and it’s a little early, but what we have seen with blackpool, I could probably say is going to happen with this as well.

This will certainly be light years better than the current WCML S, which was quite disappointing.

With these screenshots, you can see that this made with insane passion, almost every little detail is right here, this doesn’t look like something pumped out for profit, you can see that the person running just trains, really, and truly does care about the community, and wants just as much attention to detail, and accuracies as we do.

a world away from WCML S, and JT deserves the praise. They are making a lot from this route, and rightfully so.

WCML S tripped and fell over.

    this will be a masterpiece

I just wonder whether an electric loco will be challenged by the gradients. I'd much prefer the route was set a few years earlier with mainline diesel traction.

Noticed a container train in the video IMG_1134.jpeg
Reading further,:The feature loco is the iconic and complex Class 87/0, along with the BR Mk. 3a coaches, FFA/FGA container flats and BBA steel wagons.

I agree I like diesel locos, but the Class 86/87 were very powerful and accurate for the time period and "earlier" would be pretty early given that they went into service in the mid-1960s.
Dunno the exact figures, but it was more powerful than the Class 47.
I'd guess they still had diesel traction on the line at some point too since they didn't do ALL of the substantial traffic, but we'll see what's modeled. 1980s would seem to me to be prime Class 47 era, but I am still learning this UK rail stuff just since starting TSW. I'm more of a US rail fan in general =-)

    Class 86 3600 hp
    Class 87 5000 hp
And both were 30+ tonnes lighter than the Class 47
