How many routes are there going out of London? There are way more than Manchester has.

Man I hope this one will be good. Yesterday I've played the S-Bahn services on Köln-Aachen, and it is so much fun just changing ends in Düren or Horrem and return to Köln. Imagine one could change in Köln into a completely different direction. That is what I'm hoping for in Cardiff.

Don't think you'll be able to change for Köln in Cardiff, could be wrong though

Haha, I'm assuming they mean, complete one route from say Cardiff Bay, and then jump into a train heading towards Barry Docks.

When do you think we’ll get any more info on this route?

I suspect this is probably beig pencilled in for the same slot as the Goblin Line last year and the Glossop route the year before, which was what - March time?

Goblin was March, Glossop was June.

What trains are expected in this route? I can imagine a 153 and 150 being made but what about others such as the 197 and the 231?

197s don't run on this route. There's a remote chance the 231 could appear though.

I suspect we will get an updated 142 and an updated 150 as the rolling stock for the route. That way they don't have to make anything from scratch

There is no way DTG would reuse the 150 in its current state. So A new 150 would be nice though.

142 not correct for the time period. It will be a 153 and 150

Yes it was mentioned on their recent roadmap livestream I think, pretty sure they said it was a “modern day” route also if you look on the route map they gave us for the first roadmap, on each individual station there is the current TFW logo.

It's definitely said it's a TfW Diesel route, so it rules out the pacer.
So I'm going with most likely an overhauled 150 and a 153.
We won't get 3 trains, so I'm suspecting maybe the 231, and a 153, with an overhauled 150 coming later as a loco pack

True, but the current 142 would need a rebuild to be the modern spec.

JT have made three different versions of Pacer, including the one 1993+ with new engine and hydraulic(?) gearbox so it should probably fit? Or are there more differences (except the livery) that would need dealing with?

IIRC the (then) ATW Pacers were refurbished with high back “Chapman” seats to replace the bus style bench seating. Well certainly the 143’s were. So any use of the JT model would require fairly major internal changes.

They changed the doors too as if I recall the original bus type doors were prone to opening when passing another train at speed.

    Like these?
These are from a former ATW class 143623 (my photos).

Even these doors could cause interlock problems when a high speed train passed

I know Matt previously explained the reasoning behind the choice of the condensed network but I’m more and more convinced at least one of the main lines into the Valleys should have been represented in its entirety, preferably Rhymney as the most scenic.

Yeah with a network I’d rather have some full route runs connected up as opposed to several chopped up routes combined into one. It’s a shame here as most of the lines we’re getting aren’t exactly massive in milage so it still would have been one of the more suitable areas to do this.

Matt’s also said they’ll be using this to see how networks sell, but I feel like this is going to go the same way as the others. The scope is being artificially limited by DTG & they won’t see that as the issue, it’ll just be that players don’t want networks. The same as it was with BR Blue & steam etc.

In any case I’m glad we’re getting some TFW action & more sprinters (hopefully it is a new 150 & 153).

I'm hoping they've announced the route early enough to see what the uptake of serious responses is like.
Obviously covering ALL the lines isn't feasable, but if people are saying. Why not extend to Barry or cover one of the Welsh Valley lines, they might review and adjust.

You've clearly never been on the Merthyr line North of Abercynon.

It would have to be the Merthyr line. It's far too important to the history of railways to not be included.

Will we get further details in Novembers roadmap?

Hopefully we have Heath High level and Cogan as the end stops being very close to Dingle road and Heath low Level

150 and 153 paired is far more likely.
Make the 153, then reuse its physics/sounds on rivet's 150 model, modifying anything needed to make it more like a 150. Both sprinters and sound/handle very similarly

I still can't bring myself to get very excited for this route due to it's limited scope. I think if they had gone north to Pontypridd and/ or Caerphilly and included the Barry Island branch, we could have had a really special route on our hands. As it stands it will always feel incomplete, which is a terrible shame as the network around Cardiff is quite fascinating.

This. I was initially intrigued by the idea but as time has gone on, enthusiasm has waned a bit. It's not as if any of the Valley Lines are too long to have represented at least one for its full length. It's not as if in this day and age there's even going to be much in the way of industry or mining to represent.

Maybe with a future extension. We have some routes 100 miles + so a local route instead of a main line route shouldn’t be that hard to do.

I know this will be TFW not ATW but will the timetable be post June 2024? Coryton - Penarth insisted of Coryton - Radyr

I was wondering about the timetable too. Post June 2024 would also allow for Radyr - Cardiff Bay routes. Still only a fraction of the full Pontypridd - Bay route though.

People wondering about the timetable Matt said on the August roadmap about the longest run being Radyr to Coryton full so pre April with cardiff bay to Cardiff queen street full, Penarth to Cardiff partial and grangetown to radyr via llandaf partial.

Really happy we're getting a Class 153!! I do hope they'll have both the single units and doubled up units in timetable mode and not just the doubles up ones, as i do love a single Class 153 unit!

what i really want to know more about is the timetable, both driveable services and AI services, that really will determine whether this is a good route or a truly great one for me.

finally i really, really hope Heath High Level is both included in this route, and has scheduled services running to/from it, it's only about 100m off the Coryton branch and would add yet another layer of driveable services

Bloody glorious! What units, guys !! Shame about the short runs (I'd preferred a complete line included, just to give the right variety...). There's some real potential here... 150 also usable on Northern and GWR (maybe debranded) routes. And that 153... I dream of its Scotrail version! Anyway, this will be an interesting route... Can't wait :D!

From what I recall there should be, at least, self contained services as well as presumably ones going elsewhere.

I am very very excited for this. A proper 150 and a 153 in TSW will be amazing! Can I ask who's making it? Dtg or third party?

Will certainly be keeping an eye on it. Glad it is coming with some good old sprinters, rather than the Flirt things, and perhaps may buy it just for this fact alone. Hopefully the 150/2 in this will sound like a train, rather than the wife's tumble drier.
