With the 101 can I immediately go from 4th down to 2nd gear or is there a different procedure one has to follow.

Additionally, what is the down indication mean on the amp or rev guage. I know what up means but what does down signify?

    Interesting loco to drive.

You can drop gears out of sequence as long as you are going slow enough to engage the lower gear.

The down indication means that you should not change gear until you are below that rev range.

And assume you have to be below down indication for changing to a lower gear?

You can switch from any to any gear

Down on the RPM dial indicates where the RPM needs to be before engaging throttle again after changing gear

    A few quirks if you want to drive it realistically;

    - Any time you aren’t applying power (coasting) you must shift to 4th gear. And then when you want power again switch to the appropriate gear
-When stopped, and before you come to a complete stop, you must put the gearbox into neutral
-When throttling up or down you should move the handle in notches, stopping at each power setting and waiting a moment before continuing

There’s a lovely collection of videos from the 50/60’s on YouTube that goes through the operations of a 1st gen DMU, just search ‘how to drive a DMU’ and you’ll see it at the top.

No, but if you've switched gear and attempt to throttle up before the needle is below Down, the engine will just rev its nuts off

Pro-tip for the 101, you can instantly put the brakes in the lapped position by holding Square/X on controller and pressing L1/LB. There is also a way to do this on keyboard but I don't know the shortcut.

What is difference between lapped and service?

    Service: Applies the brake
    Lapped: Holds the brake steady

Once you've applied enough service braking, move the lever to lapped to maintain current brake force without applying any more.

Ah okay so it's akin to the class 66 with automatic brake where you can hold the brake

    Exactly as it says.

Release means you're no longer braking.

Ah okay just curious as to what overcharge meant as when i used it it seemingly applied some brakes.
