*Note: This program has been released with the permission of Armstrong Powerhouse, however they do not endorse it and are not liable for any issues that you may have as a result of using the Auto Updater. Any issues or bugs should be reported directly to the developer Jack Hales using the following Google form https://forms.gle/osPvcQFDtB1gtVQU9 *

Yep that's right, finally there is an easy way of downloading/extracting and installing all those AP updates!
I have just tried this for the first time today and I've got to say it's absolutely brilliant!

I could write a wall of text explaining it all but really all I need to do is post the video and a link to the download page..

    The video

    And the link

I just tried to download the file, the download was blocked and I got the following warning. I can see online that there appear to be a number of false positives relating to this particular threat. Has anybody else tried to download the program and received the same warning from Windows Defender?

I had a look at the info: I’d imagine the fact that it needs to access your browser and AP account and do things that malware might do that triggers a warning.

Every time I install something from AP itself, I have to bypass Windows security alert.

    Oddly I didn't

I suppose that warning is directed more to usage than the initial downloading of it, but either way you expect it from small scale developer downloads, how on earth do you expect Microsoft to know this software?

There’s heuristic learning: newer items tend to get flagged up (eg by Norton) and the more they are downloaded and trusted by users, the more they are likely to be given the green light.

Often it can be a bit scary when you have an alert referencing a particular Trojan, as here.

Does this AP Installer download from AP then install or does it let you download first?
I might want to get the latest version of the train I use a lot but I'm not that bothered about the stuff that sits in the background

AP have updated their packs for Wheelslip/Wheelslide which I don't want to change in my packs

I’d have to reread the info about it, but you’d want to make sure you trusted such an application, as it needs the granting of permissions that impact both on privacy and security.

One thing also to be aware of is updates that change the train in a scenario: eg a replacing 205s with the newer release of 411/2s. Something you might not want (easy enough to swap out again, I guess).

Once it has finished does it delete the contents of the C:\Users\YourUserName\AppData\Local\Downloaded Installations as well or do you still have to do it manually? I'm like P749 I only want to install certain updates that do not include ones that just change to a newer loco for a particular set of scenarios.

Gave the program a try out earlier today and it appears to work well but unfortunately you still have to empty the Downloaded Installations folder manually.

And possibly to a newer train that you don’t have: does the scenario then disappear from your list is such cases?

You can set what you don't want updated via the .csv file. It's all explained in the video.

If you watch the video, one of the first things said is that you need to disable anti-virus.

I agree you can, but you have to look at each AP item purchased to find the code and correlate that to the code number that is in the csv file (so that you can tell whicj AP product to update or not) - in my case around 100 items. I wonder if this id number is universal for all subscribers - if it is we could create a master list of the id's.

Afaik Peter the I.D.'s are all the same.. A little test.. I will PM you a loco/DMU/EMU I.D. number of your choice (assuming I own it of course) so drop me a couple of options and I will respond with my I.D. numbers, if they are unique I trust your intentions enough to know they will be discarded and shared no further if they are the same then we know that we can indeed create a master list as you suggested.

In regards to looking at each I.D. then it's a simple case of hovering your mouse over the download button and viewing the link that then shows to the bottom left of your browser (Chrome at least, I'm unsure how other browsers handle it), you don't need to click each item, so quite quick and easy to view the I.D number really, and let's face it you probably already know what items you definitely don't want updated anyway so that'll narrow down your 100 items considerably.

Seems AP installers are like buses at the moment...

I can't/wont post the full details as it's on the Alan Thomson Simulation Facebook group which is a private group plus I haven't contacted the author to ask permission to post details outside of that group, so if you want to find out more and watch the guys little demo video then you'll have to go on Facebook and join the group if you aren't yet already a member.

Is anyone using this had an issue with it not downloading the correct installers, I have just used it to download a heap of updates but 22 out of 77 of them came through with incorrect installers, noticed when I have saved the installers that the files inside the folder dont match the folder name. There was so many as I tried a second time reverting the last updated field to the beginning of this year and had the issue both times

I tested just doing one and found that it did download the correct installer so it seems to only do it when multiple are downloaded which kinda defeats the purpose of the auto installer.

This occurred with 1.2.0 the first time and 1.2.3 the second time

Why is it necessary to use a third party (ATS) installer to install an AP Product that comes with an installer?

It’s not ATS, it’s by On Track Simulation and now lives on the Train Sim Community Website.

It’s quite useful. It logs in finds all the latest updates and installs them all without you having to touch anything. Normally I’d do them manually, but when there are as many updates as there are this week, it really helps.

[1] the thread is about the AP Update installer - so you see my confusion
[2] if this On Track Simulation is causing problems why use it?

Just to clear things up in case I caused confusion. I’m talking about the AP installer (Auto Updater is probably a better description). (Not ATS). It’s written by On Track Simulation.

All I can say is that it’s not causing problems for me. Downloaded all the latest AP updates within an hour while I did something else last night. A very useful utility.

Of course nobody has to use it. But I get really bored with multiple updates and then potentially reinstalling all the branding patches and I find it very easy to lose track of where I am. This just does it all for you.

Not had any issues using the latest version of the AP Updater either, however I haven't done the latest batch of updates yet as I'm holding off until confirmation that the new feature is working correctly as mentioned in another thread.

This can have a downside. It would automatically replace any scenarios you have with ones that require new stock that you might not have. It might also remove scenarios that are no longer included, but this seems less likely to occur. I have not tested this and cannot confirm any of this, but make sure you back up any installed scenarios from prior installations before running any updates if there is stock you do not own in the newer copies. You can move yours back, but keep a copy of them safe.

As far as I'm aware it never removes anything, updates/replaces existing yes but no actual file deletion occurs with AP installers.

That would be my expectation. Thank you for confirming. An example in mind was the HHA (might be HAA), which no longer includes three scenarios.

Thanks for replying all, at this stage I will troubleshoot presuming it is an issue peculiar to my setup.

Those that are holding out, if and when you do use the updater would you mind using the save installers option and double check if it is the correct files inside the folders. As an example I have a folder named 'Class 56 Enhancement Pack' but inside are the installers for the TDA Wagon Pack (inside zips of course). Again this is only seemed to be an issue when using it to do multiple products in one go.

Should have mentioned earlier that I had the virus protection switched off while running the program.

It Flags as a False Positive because it is trying to download numerous files whilst running and is not yet a "Trusted" program. It is down to the individual to decide to do that though. Only the manual suggests to disable AV,

Yeah I get 'Virus Scan Failed' on some of the installers if I dont switch it off while running the program, seems to be mainly the branding or extra stock packs for me

I've installed all branding patches together into a separate folder. Just one click to copy it over after updating.

Yeah. I Personally don't wish to use it because of that. But from what i have seen you can monitor the entire thing. But it is up to the end user to decide to use it or not.

'Virus Scan Failed' isn't a false positive, so has anybody had a real virus issue rather than one of the program not being able to do the job?

If you are getting a virus warning on the download, this is not your Virus Checker. It’s chrome. It used to do it on the Extra Stock and Branding Patches for me. Yet if you download them one at a time, they scan fine.

There is a registry setting you can set to get around this. I can’t search for it at the moment as I’m at work. I’ll try to add it later. If you google the message you should find it.

It turns off scanning of downloads by the browser, so use it at you own risk and I suggest you set it back afterwards.

I do not trust any downloaders (and Windows also doesn't unless the developer pays to get a MS certificate). Doing it the old way, download, double click, next one, done. AP installers are super fast.

Just be sure to clean Appdata\Local\temp from time to time. (That's just the way the .msi installers work, nothing to do with AP.)

What's really[Edit - Jan - Language] is the seemingly uncorroborated, unproven and untested advice to turn off AV.
"IT IS ALSO HIGHLY RECOMMENDED THAT YOU DISABLE YOUR ANTI-VIRUS SOFTWARE AS IT IS PRONE TO REMOVING AP EXECUTABLE FILES WHEN YOU TRY TO RUN THEM"
I can probably name a dozen AV solutions without thinking too hard, have they all been tested to deserve the collective title of "it"?

I was referring more to the AP installer verses individually clicking each installer.

And you do get that the disabling of the AV software is a temporary action whilst installing, and should be reinstated upon installation completion?

And let's talk a little about AV software whilst we're at it, you are hopefully just referring to Windows own AV aren't you or are you advocating McNortonSki bloatware chocolate fireguard software?

Best to stay off your "other interests" websites whilst installing things is my advice to you Gary old mucka.

    Doh...I didn't realise that... I'm soooo fikkkk...

Of course I know it's a temporary ploy, but system security shouldn't be and such advice should be more measured and explained properly.

How did you read "I can probably name a dozen AV solutions without thinking too hard, have they all been tested to deserve the collective title of "it"?" to mean Windows Security or to be any kind of recommendation for any AV product? (and by the way I would never advocate McAfee, Norton or Kaspersky)

    "Your way sucks."
    "No, your way sucks."
    "Your way sucks more."
    "No, yours does."

I heard the ATS app did something like this at one point, too, but I've never used it so can't comment. I also do not know if it's resolved. I don't see either AP or ATS wanting to fork over money to Windows for this.
