A little music-themed thread for you: What's your favourite songs that reference trains in them - it doesn't have to be your favourite train reference in a song, just the best song that also references a train. I'll start: Indian Summer - Stereophonics Graffiti on the Train - also Stereophonics Town Called Malice - The Jam
Don't Stop Believing by Journey got to be there. Also one that is perhaps better for the video than the song itself would be 9 to 5 (Morning Train) by Sheena Easton. Probably loads more but these are the only two that come to me. Edit: Got to mention Kylie with Locomotion. I know she didn't sing it originally but by 'eck I'd happily join her with it.
Benjamon Symons. Although, Coronation Scot is one I find particularly pleasant - and it seems DTG did as well! Also, I feel like I've seen this thread before. Might just be for regular music, though... EDIT: Eh, I was wrong.
The Slow Train. Flanders and Swann's elegiac song written at the time Dr. Beeching's "Reshaping" was going on.
Southern Pacific - Neil Young City of New Orleans - Willie Nelson Orange Blossom Special - Johnny Cash Santa Fe All the Way - John E. McCollum Freight Train - Alan Jackson
These I guess count too, though they were used in promos or such for the actual railroads. Great Big Rollin' Railroad (Union Pacific) Southern Pacific Roll On Norfolk Southern: What's Your Function?
Marrakesh Express by Crosby Stills and Nash. Waterloo Sunset by The Kinks Last Train to Clarksville by The Monkees. (Sixties childhood!) Underground Music by Ivor Biggun (his least rude song). Also worth a watch on Youtube is the Every Tube Station song by Jay Foreman. And some more dubious references Waterloo by Abba Victoria by The Kinks Warwick Avenue by Duffy Sunny Goodge Street by Donovan And, of course, anything by Train.
Albert Hammond - I'm a Train of course! More for the fan-tas-tic clip, brilliant song anyway: And a bonus one:
Couple from the great late Frank Sidebottom, Next Train to Timperley Timperley Sunset And for another group ELO Last train to London
Oh yes. On the San Fierro freeway and over the Garver bridge full speed into the Desert in a pimped out Lowrider with Hyrdaulics . I miss 2004. :,)
Down in the Tube Station at Midnight - The Jam Midnight Train to Georgia - Gladys night and the pips. The Story of old 97 - Boxcar Willie
I have over 100 songs on a playlist. It's a long story how some of them fit in and some might not agree, but check it out. You can always take some for yourself and add them to your own personalized playlist. https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLL0P7r-L5OB06AbUnLWv9158PvZWfTJGp&si=55tvwXe2NlsuvOg8 ("Justified" songs are in there a lot because it started as just a "coal country" playlist which fits the Appalachia steam vibe for Clinchfield or Sand Patch, but it expanded from there to be more of a general "trains" playlist, so know that it's heavily American and steam focused for the 40s-70s) as I said, you can pick what you want and leave the rest.)
Thanks to the radio show Nekodesu from The Cat. I found out about this song Not sure what it's about but is called Voyager Train Aqours with Happy Party Train
Folsom Prison Blues - Johnny Cash Letter to America - The Proclaimers Oh I Wept - Free And the moving Waltz for George by Public Service Broadcasting.
"Another man, with eyes heavy with sleep, who limped along on painful feet because his boots hadn’t been off for five days And at his bag, a ukulele dangled from his haversack But he still had enough kick in him to ask the sergeant for a seat facing the engine when he got to the train" https://youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_kJs8mrrRlqRu_wan15fK_AKeHruU8EcnU&si=50NiqNHVgrB8XKQh The whole EP is a work of sublime genius... Another by PBC is Night Mail
Love Night Mail, I posted that in a similar thread some time ago. Love PSB, going to see them next month at Camden Roundhouse, which of course used to be the LNWR shed serving Euston.
Even though this thread is as dead as a dodo now, I have got another songs that mixes in with the Jolly Season. The Christmas Cannonball by Hank Snow.
I’ve just listened to a song I used to love and haven’t heard for years. I’m a Train by Albert Hammond.
