I’ve been out all afternoon and managed to sneak 10 minutes or so while I was out to watch the reveal on my phone but I’m back now and it looks like I’ve got a lot to catch up on the forum. By the looks of some thread titles and some posts I’ve seen already, the reveal hasn’t gone down well with some people. I’m hoping some people are happy with it though.

Completely separate from me guessing it correctly (eventually), I’m actually very happy with the reveal and that Thomas is coming to TSW. It makes sense and also makes sense to reveal it this way. I was never really that into Thomas, being possibly a bit too old when the TV series started and had never read the books, but it is a big part of some people’s lives and it being in TSW is not only expected but can only be good for the game. It’s going to be a lot of fun for a lot of people and will bring new players to the hobby.

It’ll probably take me a couple of hours to catch up on all related posts here on the forum but I was actually very excited after watching the reveal video and will be watching tomorrow to get more details. I think it’s good news and for anyone who thinks it isn’t I’ll also be very interested in finding out why. So I’m going back a few pages now to read everyone’s reactions.

I hope not, I’m probably going to put on enough weight over Christmas without everyone doing that. Unless of course everyone’s just chipping in to get me exactly two mince pies and one brandy snap, I could probably manage it.

Man, what a bunch of Debbie Downers! I think it's a clever move- and for those who think trains are Deadly Serious Business... well there's still Over Shap and Mittenwaldbahn. Like any other DLC, if you don't like Thomas then don't buy it. I think bailing out on TSW entirely is real drama-queenery.

Are you for real? I mean, there's poisoning the well and then there's... whatever you've been doing for all these years.

For the people not paying attention: it's all relative/directional. A review is normally equivalent to about 20 copies sold. The number goes up or down a bit depending on a multitude of factors, such as the genre, the franchise, the demographic. As all these factors have remained largely unchanged for TSW, the review numbers dropping by half is a strong indicator that the sales have dropped similarly.

It does not mean that there were 80 people playing and now there's 40. But it almost certainly does mean that whatever the number of the people who were buying TSW DLCs a year ago was, it's been cut in half. At least.

Thomas the Tank Engine is hard to acquire the IP for, Mattel are very strict with everything Thomas related. That makes it worthy a big reveal, they've accomplished the impossible.

Thomas is also a steam Engine. Reworked steam physics maybe?

I used to volunteer on the KESR a long time ago. I don't think Mattel had the licence then but whoever it was were very strict about what could and couldn't be done on Thomas days and it all had to be presented exactly as they wanted.

I’d like to thank DTG JD and everyone at DTG for giving me a nice little Christmas present just for correctly guessing Thomas is coming to TSW. I’ve been expecting that Thomas & Friends may come to TSW at some point but it was a last minute brainwave that led me to guess it as being for this reveal.

Cheers guys, and Merry Christmas one and all :D

I have absolutely no relation to Thomas, never heard, never seen. But I'm not from UK, maybe that's why. It's been said already, looks out of place. Sad for the devtime that could have been something useful everyone profits from, like a patch. I guess it was financialy lucrative to sign with Mattel to do this and hype it to the community. No idea why they choose to make this the big reveal at all!?

What an absolutely brilliant idea and I applaud it unreservedly.

I suspect I probably won’t buy it (the first ever dlc I haven’t purchased) but many will and hopefully we will see a further step change in growth for DTG.

Fair play and if it means that the development of steam is being reviewed again then I hope it transfers into the rest of the game.

Well done to the team at DTG for securing the license and bah humbug to the forum thought police

I hope we get Trevor, Percy, James, Emily etc.

I wonder how many trucks Thomas can haul over Shap?

I have no interest in Thomas DLC personally so I won't be buying it. I watched the Original Series, but grew out of it at around 6 years old and already had quite a knowledge of railways by then.

But at the same time I don't really see the issue with having it. Heritage lines like the West Somerset Railway (and if it comes as part of the future Esk Valley route being developed, as intended by the creator, the North Yorkshire Moors Railway) run or have run Thomas events, so there is an element of prototypical operation (albeit these are models based on the TV show, rather than locos made to look like Thomas that run at those events).

I know it's a Simulation game, but other simulation or partially simulation games have also had fictional elements or crossover with Franchises in the past, so it's nothing new here.

He won't have steam is my guess, so 2 as he runs on 12v DC.

I would place actual real money on Thomas not having simplified controls.

The thing that gets me the most about this is not how they've hyped it up as a massive reveal, but don't get me wrong overhyping is one of the most angering aspects of most DTG releases (DLOTGW and NYT are foremost in my mind), but mainly how DTG so brazenly turn their back on their playerbase. Whilst I'm sure there are people who will buy this and no doubt enjoy it; seems to me that the most heavily requested routes, think London, Tilbury & Southend Rway or the GEML, which would cater to a lot of the wants of the players, and in my eyes are perfectly suited to the nature of the game, are not the ones that get developed and worked into a fully fleshed out passion project, much like SEHS, which at this point seems like it was only so heavily invested in because the company's base is in Chatham.

Whilst I am of course limiting my experience of the people who play TSW to my own opinions, and those of the forum members- I would have thought that the first port of call for DTG to look at the desires of their players, would be their own forums. From what I can gather, most people here want TSW to be heavy on the simulation aspect of it's title, aiming for as high standards in their route & trains as possible, with sensible end points, and decent quality traction. not routes that either don't have suitable start and end points, PFR, ECML (to an extent) and massively WCMLS, which whilst highly requested hugely underdelivered on release- but credit where it's due DTG have since improved it... somewhat.

Perhaps this should be its own thread but I just wanted to put forward my opinions on the overhyping of the announcement, and DTG's practices as as of late.

That has made me think - I have certainly seen a lot of people suggesting the LTS and the other routes you mentioned, but has anyone seriously suggested Thomas The Tank Engine? I wouldn't be surprised to see Sodor on a suggestion list (there's a brilliant recreation mostly based on the Railway Series version of Sodor that sadly will never be completed, but is still great), but I struggle to believe someone would have unironically suggested a Day Out With Thomas loco pack.

Sodor has been discussed and I think Hogwarts Express got some discussion back in 2022.

And I thought i did see a suggestion for a Day out with Thomas DLC around that time.

And if I remember people said DTG would never be able to get the licensing for it just this spring

    Well challenge accepted said DTG

Not going to happen ever. Why are you so mad lol. It's literally one single dlc. Just ignore it and move along

    • Like Like x 5
  32. But it is not a single DLC. It is like the 3rd one in 2 years. First that elf route, then the rivet paint pack or whatever it was called, and now this.

Everybody defending this poor excuse of a DLC seams to "forget" that fact when they flame me.

So what lol. There's plenty of other realistic dlc. You're comparing only 3 to the other 100. Also what even is a good dlc. Every person likes different types of routes which means a good dlc is only when you like it. The world doesn't revolve around what you only like buddy

What may be poor to you may be great to younger people and to other people thay may like the dlc. You may think you speak for most people or the majority but you dont. You speak for one person... you. As per people flaming you well this is what happens when you put stupid things like this down. Incidently are you the same person that started the petition over at Change.org to try and get Dovetail to delete the Thomas and friends DLC?
You only have yourself to blame. Dont go whining that people are not likeing you for it. You can sulk, pout your lips and stamp your little feet as long as you want but Thomas and friends are coming to TSW whether you like it or not!
