There we come to my favorite saying in advance and there the problem begins, when I only we are extremely demanding here, but also the people who join the Thomas fans. And DTG doesn't even manage to keep up with it now. So yes it's the worst idea I've ever seen in my life. (Games related to industrial technology) And yes, I still remember when I saw this for the first time on YouTube and just thought wow. But to see this well...

Thomas reading the comments wondering why people are losing their mind at a fun dlc aimed to welcome people into the magic of trains and the hobby many of us love.

Maybe there's a few here who could perhaps use this wonderful thomas reflection tool and think about how their posts read.

I grew up with Thomas and now I get to enjoy him for minutes or hours again. You're not being conscripted into playing, they'll still be serious stuff coming...

You have to admit the marketing was spot on. How many people were excited and were waiting in anticipation. They hooked alot of us in. And thats what you want with a marketing campaign.

Disappointing yes but I don't see it as that big a deal. I saw lots I want with what else was revealed.

All I know about steam train is that coal goes in one and sheet comes out the other. And the neds are broadly better behaved than the diesel variants.

Some heritage lines do day out with Thomas railtours that would have made somewhat more sense than a complete fictional thing in a real life 'simulator'

Using cobbled-up "Thomases" based on something else, since there are no surviving E2s. So what's "fictional"?

I doubt they'd be similar as the E2 was a LB&SCR Locomotive that was made earlier than the Jinty and apparently wasn't great (issues with stability and bunker apparently). The Jinty was used across a wide range of the network I believe. So it'd probably have been better for Thomas to be a Jinty :D

Well, apparently it stemmed from Awdry handing his illustrator a photo to work from. What mattered was that it was an 0-6-0T, not that it was a good one.

Still, the E2s lasted for fifty years as shunters, right up until their replacments by diesels. It was in the attempt to use them on passenger service that they proved unsatisfactory.

So, apparently the previous preview image of my proposed Thomas series was a little too humpy, so here is a slightly less humpy version.

Also, for the love of all that is holy DO NOT EVER Google "Hump Yard" without adding the word "Railway" trust me just DON'T!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Certainly this big reveal wasn't anything I would have guessed at or would have wanted personally and I do have a bit of a sense of "really is this really it". However some of the reaction here is typically over the top. As said, don't expect too much and you won't be disappointed.

There is so much hyperbole, like, this is the end of TSW, nothing is ever fixed etc, etc.

Are people really going to stop using TSW or stop buying DLC just because an add-on they don't like has been released? I suspect not. TSW is not going anywhere, there is plenty of "serious" DLC to come and there will be more to follow.

The members of this forum are a tiny percentage of the user base. We don't know what feedback DTG has had beyond these forums.

This could turn out to be very good for TSW as I imagine Thomas will be quite a money spinner and get more people interested in the sim, which in turn will keep the franchise profitable.

I do understand why some are disappointed but to act like it is the end of the world and the end of train-simming as we know it is completely over the top.

Very true, the onset of world war 2 meant that the southerns grand plans for electrification were halted and all of the pre Grouping steam stock was run into the ground somewhat! Apparently they struggled with shunting sometimes as well due to their long wheelbase and brakes. I just find it fascinating that they were the basis for Thomas the tank engine and yet they all got scrapped unfortunately.

This video about the E2s is pretty interesting! This book has a few interesting accounts from a driver mentioning some of the quirks. Well worth the watch :)

Because he's always passing telegraph poles.....

What have you been searching? :o

I searched "Hump Yard" (without "Railway"), and the first thing that popped up was classification Yard for railways

There's high expectations, then there's high expectations.

Why fix bugs when they can capitalise on Thomas' 80th anniversary?

They didn't exactly go about fixing steam physics for Flying Scotsman's 100th, they just capitalised on it.

This reveal was like Sant Claus bringing me a stocking full of coal. You must give it up to their marketing team because they hooked us all for 20 days.

I am certainly putting something up to the marketing team. It is just about the only sign language I know and involves two of my fingers in a 'V' shape.

To build it up like they did is shocking really.

If they set it up like the old “Day out with Thomas” events at most heritage railways then I can see the appeal but instead it’ll most likely have no actual cab controls and no steam effects at all.

The one time as a community we are crying out for another heritage route or another steam engine and they give us this absolute joke of an announcement.

Hi folks - Just to add my perspective here, the reveals were meant to provide to different groups of people throughout the event (with various region/gameplay focusses), and this is the same with our Big Reveal too.

Although, independent of if the Thomas add-on is something for you or not, this is a huge collaboration for our teams, and a brilliant opportunity that we're all super excited about. There's definitely an element of expectations that could have been better managed leading up to the reveal, but I hope that helps understand where we come from when we say "grand/big".

It's a single add-on, same as anything else on the calendar, but it represents so much more, and hopefully a really special treat to those passionate about Thomas and the unique gameplay it will bring! :)

To be honest from the perspective of someone here for a train simulator, no not really. It may well be important for DTG as a company, but surely a staff Christmas dinner would suffice, rather than building up the whole player base to this, which is something many don't seem to care much about. How were this any more exciting than any of the other reveals from the perspective of a player?

When the words big reveal were thrown around, I did temper my expectations, though I feel that at least thinking it would be something to make the game better for a large majority of the player base, such as a core improvement, or the return of steam, but instead it were this. I think even a regionalised DLC such as a new British freight loco, US Freight or whatever the Germans want (sorry can't name any examples of my head) would have gone down better with the player base as a whole. This leaves a bit of a sour taste if I am honest. Speaking of sour tastes, I think a new Electrostar would be more exciting than this to me!

Obviously aimed at DTG/Focus rather than you Alex as I understand you can't really do owt but pass on messages.

Here's the thing, something can technically be a huge deal, but not necessarily be a big draw for the core crowd. A big example that comes to my mind is Nintendo's casual games, think Brain Age or the various Wii branded games. They sell millions don't generate excitement with the core Nintendo crowd, and thus often don't get revealed at Nintendo Directs. Meanwhile a series like Metroid, while by every metric is smaller, but is disproportionately popular with the core crowd that tune into Nintendo events. This is reason Metroid Prime 4 & Metroid Dread are often big reveals Nintendo Direct, while games like Labo & Ring Fit get shoved off to the side and revealed on Twitter or a random YouTube upload.

Sorry, but this whole narrative is a massive cope. I´ve been hearing for it years. Something disappointing gets announced and people keep coming up with this whole story of: "well, when they have made loads of money with this silly thing, they will return to building a 100 mile US freight route or some kind of steam route in 1950 or some super complex long German route".
The answer is no! It´s not happening and with stuff like "Thomas" it´s becoming less and less likely day by day.

C'mon guys, this is a great opportunity to see what REALLY goes on on Sodor once the cameras have stopped rolling? Does Thomas really prime in his sleep, and who keeps blowing off in the shed? I bet there's a gag or two about goods engines only needing 16 inches whilst passenger engines need 18 too!

Very disappointed with this reveal! Was hoping for the onboard announcements system to be ready or a special new route or loco dlc. Not a cartoon toy train for kids i dont even like. On one of the most boring Tsw routes the WSR... Thankyou DTG.

After all these years; I did not set any high expectations for this 'big reveal' having been let down in the past. I didn't read any of the hype threads and just let it runs its course....but to say I was highly suprised by the announcement is an understatement.
This should have been a regular DLC announcement or better yet (as many have said) a release for their Roblox game.

A classic case of DTG misreading the room

Think you misunderstand my intention with my statement and why I made use of the word "if".

As I have already posted in several places I don't think this is a good content decision for TSW and would have been better suited as a spin off game including the complete Isle Of Sodor, with a team brought in specifically for that purpose. Ultimately the only way we will know whether Thomas is a success or not is if they add to it or, as seems likely, becomes another one off unsupported DLC which in this case has probably cost them dearly for the licence plus commision on every copy they sell.
