TSC and TSW are comparable but different. *shrugs* It's really more a PC/Community vs Console/Marketplace model rather than the game itself or company since DTG runs both. I play both for different things. And then other games for yet more different things that neither TSC nor TSW have (such as Derail Valley for it's dynamic economy and content), Railroads Online for track building and steam content, Railroader for a more narrative experience and railroad builder, etc. They all have their place.
To be fair, If one was lucky enough to have all the old AP sound packs, it makes the RSC stock a tad better to drive in a way - obviously not in looks (unless there are texture patches that overwrite the originals (like the Class 421/422/423 texture patch as shown in the screenshot, available over at ATS). That being said I do have a fair bit of AP content, just not enough space on my PC to store it all unfortunately.
Best purchase recently was a 2TB NVMe for RailWorks. It openend up new countries for me with content better than I'd thought, Netherlands, Czechia, Hungary, Spain, Belgium, Italy and France. All of which I had not pursued before due to lack of storage.
I do need to get myself a replacement for my 256GB C drive, although I'd have to figure out a way of making a perfect copy of what's already on it so I don't lose anything. My computer has some OEM drivers on it that can't be installed separately from what I've read. Currently my TS install sits on a 2TB SATA SSD, and it has made itself comfortable in 800GB of it. I have TSW 3 and 4 installed on separate drives because I couldn't be bothered to redownload all my mods for the later games. I could probably get rid of them at some point to make some extra room, but I'm sure I can find the space for TS somewhere else for now.
There are good hardrive cloning tools out there https://www.techradar.com/best/best-disk-cloning-software I'd recommend if possible using M.2 NVMe SSD, SATA is incredibly slow in comparison - depends on your motherboard of course. Mine has a few M2 slots, installation is really just plug and play.
I'm due for an upgrade soon, given my PC is nearly 5 years old. Definitely going for some bigger M.2 slots and finally get rid of that old 1TB 7200rpm HDD that's still chugging along -I'm running TSC on my C drive that now takes up roughly 350GB - my drive capacity is 500GB (according to windows its actually 465GB)
My C drive is M.2, but the other two slots are SATA and one already had a 2TB hard drive which I kept. I also have a 4TB external USB which I mainly use for backups and lighter games. I think my motherboard may have a second M.2 slot but I don't know for sure. One interesting development is that within the next few years graphics cards may have M.2 slots added to them, as currently they don't use the entire bus.
I have an additional 4 TB spinning HDD where I store all personal data like photos, also do modding (lots of data shuffling which can quickly heat up SSDs), my TSC downloads and important stuff. In other words everything stored on SSDs is replaceable (Windows, Apps, Steam games) and not vital in case of failure. For means of storage I still trust HDDs more, my old PC's WD is still running well and it's twelve years old. No data corruption. An amazing video on SSD technology
I got a 2 TB SSD about two years ago and I can install anything I want, without worry about diskspace. It´s definitly mandatory for TSC freaks. I also have TSW on that SDD... if it ever gets filled up, I will ditch TSW.
Yes. And you should never remove assets to save space - you will regret it at some point due to dependencies. Apparently some people had the bad idea of uninstalling Academy... If I'm not playing some routes I just move their Route folders to a Storage folder. And when troubleshooting freeware routes, I'm removing all other routes for ultra fast restarting of the game. (Editing templates need rebooting, as these are cached in memory)
I´ve actually ran in to problems with this in the past. As you know, almost every German route has deluxe, reloaded or whatever version. A couple of years ago i deleted all the vanilla German DTG routes from the content folder and only kept the reworked ones.... I started having missing groundtextures on some routes. Did I do something wrong?
Has nothing to do with it. A route cannot access any other route folder, so you must have removed more than the route folders. If you untick on Steam, both Content and Assets will be removed, and additionally the DRM will kick in if there's still assets belonging to that DLC in your game somehow. Large triangles
