Good afternoon everyone. New year, new batch of TSW suggestions from me! Today I'm definitely going out of my comfort zone, creating an "open" proposal: one route and 4 possible different layouts to make it! You'll choose which one! But now let's get back to us... Today I want to propose you the Chiltern Railways (I know...). This Network runs through the Greater London urban area, as well as 3 different South-East counties: Buckinghamshire, Hertfordshire (short stretch) and Oxfordshire. Our route/s starts from the London terminal in Marylebone, crossing the West Hampstead common area and reaching Neasden Junction (Wembley). Here, the path splits into two: Towards Aylesbury and Ruislip (Northolt Jn.). First case the route will end there (Parkway Terminal), while in the second it will continue towards North-East (Main Line). Crossing the countyriside up to Bicester: here it will split for the last time, towards Oxford and Banbury. All this crossing the dense urban area of London, the surrounding towns and countryside. Reaching the mid-point between the capital and Birmingham! Which one will you choose? These are my Chiltern Railways: Marylebone to Oxford, Banbury or Aylesbury! GENERAL FEATURES The network is made up of 4 different lines: a) Chiltern Mainline (Marylebone-Banbury): - 69mi (110.6km) total lenght, including the St John's Wood Tunnel stretch. - Dedicated double track along the entire stretch, except for Tube lines adjacent sections (up to 6 tracks). Standard gauge (4 ft 8+1⁄2 in), unelectrified (except for Tube tracks' 4th rail, 630/750V DC). - 50-100mph (80-160km/h) maximum permitted speed. b) London–Aylesbury Line (complete): - 39mi (63km) total lenght, including the initial Mainline shared section. - Dedicated double track, with 4 side-by Tube ones (Neasden-Harrow on the Hill), unelectrified (except for Tube tracks' 4th rail, 750V DC). - 4 tracks (2x shared), 4th rail 750V DC powered (Harrow on the Hill-Hamersham). - Double track, unelectrified (Hamersham-Aylesbury). - Single track, unelectrified (Aylesbury-Vale Parkway Terminal). All standard gauge. - 50-75mph (80-120km/h) maximum permitted speed. c) Aylesbury–Princes Risborough Branch Line (complete): - 7mi (11.3km) total lenght. - Single track, standard gauge (no passing loops). Unelectrified. - 40mph (64km/h) maximum permitted speed. d) Oxford-Bicester Link+Oxford Common Stretch (complete): - 13mi (20.7km) total lenght. - Double track, standard gauge, unelectrified (except for the Oxford common stretch, with 4 tracks). - 75mph (120km/h) maximum permitted speed. All lines are equipped with Automatic Signaling (2/4 aspect signals), AWS/TPWS supported. Including Automatic Underground Signaling (common sections/side by tracks), ATP and ATO supported (depends on which Tube line). The network is managed by: - Network Rail (UK national railway infrastructure manager), except for the LU areas. The passenger service is operated by: - The Chiltern Railway Company Ltd (Arriva UK Group private operator). - LU/LO Ltd (TfL public company operators). - First Greater Western (First Group private operator) [some areas only]. - XC Trains Ltd (CrossCountry), Arriva UK Group private operator [some areas only]. Plus all WCML brands (where needed). The freight service is operated by: - DB Cargo UK Ltd (Deutsche Bahn sub.). - GBRf Ltd (GB Rail Freight), Infracapital private operator. - Freightliner Group Ltd (G&W Company private operator). - DC Rail Freight (Cappagh Group private operator). You can find they on the TfL website: Jubilee, Metropolitan and Central lines. LINK: https://tfl.gov.uk/travel-information/timetables/ FREIGHT SERVICE Freight service on this network is very limited. Only some intermodal runs between Oxford and Banbury (Cherwell Valley line); Midlands to the South East and vice versa. It's possible to see them in action (AI Only) in the two locations! There are also some services to support the new HS2 construction, north of Aylesbury. Some JNA convoys run regularly between Quainton HS2 Terminal (aggregates/ballast) to Tytherington. Obviously via Aylesbury-Princes Risborugh branch line and down to Northolt Jn (mainline). There were also some waste transport services (until 2019) to Calvert freight sidings, now suspended due to the HS2 and EWR worksites! ROLLING STOCK The following rolling stock can be seen on this route: PASSENGER - Chiltern BR Class 68 UKLight+Mk3a TSO/RFM+Mk3 DVT Mainline Convoy. - Class 68: Modern and powerful mainline multi-role locomotive. 34 of which were built (2013-17). It's one of the latest additions to the UK fleet. It's powered by a powerful Caterpillar V16 turbodiesel engine, combined with electric traction. Its maximum speed reaches 100mph (160km/h). The Chiltern fleet consists of 6 units, delivered on lease (from DRS) in 2014. - Mk3a TSO/RFM: These are the classic Mk3 loco-hauled coaches, heavily updated and modified for mainline use: new interiors, automatic plug doors and new toilets. Both the TSO (Standard Class) and RFM (Business Class) types are present. The Chiltern fleet consists of 25 specimens (20xTSO+5xRFM), making up 5 complete trainsets. - Mk3 DVT: This is the cabcar used for mainline push/pull services (with Class 68). It's equipped with a driver's cabin, suitable for working with different types of locos (68, 67 etc...). There's also a luggage area (not in use) and a technical compartment, equipped with HEP (air conditioning, electric and pneumatic power). The latter is meant to keep the carriages "active", even when the loco is switched off or disconnected. They're used on fast mainline services, between Birmingham and London. - Chiltern BR Class 165/0 Networker Turbo DMU. Old and reliable NSE origin DMU. 39 specimens were built in 1990-92. Serving with Chiltern since privatisation. It's powered by Perkins I6 turbodiesel engines (one per car), combined with hydraulic transmission. Its maximum speed reaches 75mph (120km/h). There are two variants: - 2 cars (28 examples). - 3 cars (11 examples). They're exclusively used on stopper services! - Chiltern BR Class 168 Clubman DMU. Modern DMU belonging to the pre-Turbostar ADTranz family. 19+9 specimens were built in 1998-04. It's powered by MTU I6 turbodiesel engines (one per car), combined with hydraulic transmission. Its maximum speed reaches 100mph (160km/h). There are 4 variants: - 168/0: 4 cars only (with cabin similar to Networkers). 5 specimens. - 168/1: 3 and 4 cars (with bumper similar to Electrostars). 6x 3-car and 2x 4-car specimens. - 168/2: 3 and 4 cars (completely similar to the 170/172s). 3x 3-car and 3x 4-car specimens. - 168/3(former 170/3): 2 cars only (different headlights and engines). 9 specimens. They're mainly used on mainline and semi-fast services between Birmingham, Oxford and London. OTHER LAYERS - Underground: S Stock (Metropolitan, driveable), 1996 Stock (Jubilee, AI Only), 1992 Stock (Central, AI Only), 1973 Stock (Piccadilly, where needed), 1972 Stock (Bakerloo, on WCML). - Overground: Class 378 Capitalstar (on Mildmay, where needed) and Class 710 Aventra (on Lioness/WCML). - WCML: Avanti 390 Pendolino, LNR 350 Desiro, Southern 377/7 Electrostar. - GWR: Class 165/1 (From GWE remaster), Class 800/0 and /3 IET, Class 802 IET (AI Only). - XC: Class 220 Voyager and 221 Super Voyager (AI Only). Page 3 WHY YES, WHY NOT POSITIVE ASPECTS - Perfect UK suggestion for this game, having great flexibility of implementation. - Modular layout. Possibility of choosing between different conf. - Excellent setting and change of scenery: city center, suburbs and countryside. - Excellent number of daily services, with an excellent mix of mainline, semi-fast and stopper. - Presence of freight traffic (even if rather limited and localized only in some areas). - Excellent variety of the rolling stock proposed: with DMUs and loco-hauled convoys. - 165/0 could be created starting from the already present 166 (GWR), modifying and remodeling it as required. - 168s could be remodeled from the 170 already in game. The /1, /2 and /3 subclasses are really similar to it. - Class 68 would also have an extensive use as freight unit (DRS), to be deployed on different routes. - Mk3a could be remodeled starting from the JT model. - Possibility of creating an S Stock, if the Aylesbury line would be chosen. This could be directly reused on future appropriate LU routes. NEGATIVE ASPECTS - The route would start from London city centre, not exactly an easy place to recreate and with potential performance issues. - The stock choice is crucial. I also consider its creation somewhat complex (Maybe DLCs?). - Some areas may be empty, especially in absence of LU stock. ROUTE PICS Left: Regent's Park, immediately next to Marylebone terminal. Right: West Hampstead node area, note the three stations: Thameslink (top), Mildmay (mid) and Jubilee (bottom). Chiltern tracks are the bottom two. Left: Wembley Stadium, with our mainline and the namesake Chiltern LMD alongside it. Right: Neasden LU TMD. Note the huge junction: Chiltern mainline below and Chiltern/LU common section (to Aylesbury) on top. Left: Ruislip LU TMD, serves as main depot for the Central line. Right: Upper Heyford AFB, former NATO Air Base near Bicester (now commercial area). Left: Denham Viaduct, just before the namesake stop. It crosses the Grand Union Canal. Right: Chinnor & Princes Risborough Railway, small preserved 4 mile branch between the namesake towns. The association performs heritage railtours with steam, diesel convoys and DMUs. The two Souldern Viaducts: South (No. 1, left) and North (No. 2, right). These are the most famous railway structures on the Chiltern mainline. They're located just before Aynho Junction. Note the line from Oxford, in the second pic. I also remember the presence of the Northolt Air Base (active), the Chalfont Viaduct (on the M25) with its famous writings... Oh, without forgetting the Buckinghamshire Railway Centre, which runs small heritage railtours in the Aylesbury area. ROUTE VIDEOS POV cabwiew, Birmingham Moor Street-London Marylebone (mainline). All RIGHTS and CREDITS reserved to the original authors. CONCLUSIONS It's nice to smell the burnt diesel in the morning (from Marylebone)... ... It was more or less like that, wasn't it? Anyway! Welcome back to London! Ride Chiltern services from the iconic Merylebone terminal (in the North-west of the city) to their final destinations in the countryside. Travel through one of the capital’s busiest railway areas, with several junctions between lines from different operators! Choose from the veteran 165s, the modern 168s or the fantastic 68s with Mk3 racks. You can also run services on a decent stretch of the Metropolitan Line, using the modern S Stock! Choose your route conf! Would you like to go towards Banbury, Oxford or Aylesbury? Perhaps treat yourself to a quiet break on the little Princes Risborough-Aylesbury branch? The choice is yours! These are my Chiltern Railways: Marylebone to Oxford, Banbury or Aylesbury! Caravatt. PS. Integrations and corrections are always welcome! Don't hesitate! Since I live a few thousand km from this route, there may be some small errors!
Really good detailed suggestion, and with the time you put in to this. I mean I am surprised this isn't your home route with the detail in these suggestions. I really hope one of these options are made and released. I think if they do make Chiltern Mainline it will be TSW6 cover route and will be London to Banbury with maybe the Oxford branch at a push (could maybe come later like SEHS.) All in all though great suggestions and I hope at least one of them succeeds!
I think which one to go for depends on whether DTG or a 3rd party can do the Met Line and S stock. Having commuted on the Aylesbury branch a lot of what would make the services interesting from a driving perspective is how the dispatching of the Chiltern services is fitted in with the fast Met services to Amersham/Chesham in particular. In fact given currently DTG has the TfL license but the status of Chiltern is uncertain there's a case for doing the Met Line but using unbranded Class 166s to represent the Chiltern services on the section between Harrow-on-the-Hill and Amersham. If they can get the Chiltern license but don't want to do the Met Line I would say do one of the longer distance routes suggested with the correct Chiltern rolling stock to Banbury and/or Oxford. At Oxford the GWR and Cross-country services could be represented using HSTs if they don't want to or can't use the current rolling stock for these services (until recently GWR did also use Class 166s for some services to Oxford).
Yeah but they did it on the wcml with the overground and could do cross-country scenarios rolling start and if you own gwe you can drive the Didcot to Oxford part. Edit:10:56am - Also isnt there a freight depot at Didcot
lots of rolling stock variety, nice length, looks like there would be lots to do and to keep you on your toes with action... definitely approved
watching this bit by bit and it's amazing... slow, fast, lots of changes, interesting and often changing scenery, nice rolling stock... yeah, I would definitely buy this
Yes, there's a DB Cargo yard (mostly) there. However, I would see such a route as being in its own right. Let's say Paddington to Banbury via Didcot and Oxford. With the "fake" 165/1 (from GWE remaster) and maybe an HST... I'm doubtful about its feasibility (licence) ! razmatus#2517 Yes, this is a perfect UK route for this game! I totally agree with your thoughts! PS. Personally, if I watched those videos in full (especially cabcars), I'd end up falling asleep...
it is one of those cases that derail (pun intended) my old misconception about diesel trains/locos being super sluggish and slow and stuff like that... I mean, yeah, they cant really compete with well fleshed out electric machines, but they are still strong and decent... and I am finding myself playing a lot of UK and US diesel content... there is sth nice and calm in steady but firm acceleration and chugging along
Would love to see any form of this route, as I have often travelled on it. It would be great to see a class 68 in the game as well, and this route seems to have lots of variety and plenty of AI services to keep things interesting and busy. It would be great to see Oxford in the game as another station on the GWR. You’ve put a lot of detail into the suggestion so I hope it gets noticed
MAIN INTEGRATION Regarding a potential future DLC, two concrete opportunities: 1) Underground S Stock (DLC). Modern and iconic series of LU electric trains, belonging to the Movia family by Bombardier. 192 trainsets were built in 2008-17. Electric traction (4th rail shoes, 630-750V DC). They're equipped with CBTC and Tripcock safety systems. Their maximum speed reaches 62mph (100km/h). There are two versions: - S7 Stock, consisting of 7 cars, 133 units here. - S8 Stock, consisting of 8 cars (slightly different roof and other details), 59 units here. They're used on the LU Circle, District, H&City and Metropolitan (suggested here) Lines. It would be great to drive them between Finchley Road and Amersham (it's a long stretch), seeing it AI Only also towards Chesham and Watford! 2) Chinnor & Princes Risborough Preserved Railway (Expansion?). This is a small preserved railway, about 4 miles (6.4km) long that runs from Princes Risborough (dedicated platform) to Chinnor, in South Oxfordshire. It's single track (standard gauge) served and has a maximum speed of 25mph (40km/h). Unelectrified. This is a very old line, opened in 1872 by GWR (to Watlington) and closed between 1957 and 1989 (when C&PRR was born). The Chinnor operating area, with its station (single platform) on left. The Princes Risborough Boundary (note the original signalbox) on right. Stops present: - Chinnor, with dedicated signal box and depot, in addition to the maneuvering area. - Wainhill Crossing (currently not in use). Thame Junction (former Wycombe Railway). - Princes Risborough, with dedicated platform and sidings area. It also features an original signalbox and access to the mainline. There are regular heritage services, between April and August (weekends mainly) and two Steam/Diesel Galas (March and September). The railway can also be seen operating over the Christmas period. The association runs both steam and diesel powered train services. During Galas, it's also possible to see several units coming from the mainline. Luckily, we already have most of the rolling stock we need ingame: - BR Class 08 General-purpose diesel-electric shunter. Here present with two units: BR Green and NSE (only reskins needed). - BR Class 31 and BR Class 37 Mainline diesel-electric locos. The first is present with its splendid BR Engineering livery, while the second with its classic BR Metals Sector (already ingame) one. - BR Class 121 "Bubble Car" Diesel-mechanical railcar. Iconic BR 1st gen railcar, here present with two units, originally used on the Princes Risborough-Aylesbury branch line. The first is in BR Maroon livery (operational), while the second in BR Green (under restoration) one. Could also be used on WCL (St Ives Bay Line)! The coaches used are all BR Mk1 Type: - Mk1 TSO (2nd class lounge): 4 secimens (2x Brown-Cream and 2X BR Maroon). - Mk1 SK/BSK (2nd class corridor/brake): 4 specimens (2xBrake Brown-Cream/BR Maroon and 2xCorridor Brown-Cream/BR Maroon). - Mk1 BG (luggage): 1 specimen (Brown-Cream). - Mk1 RMB (mini buffet): 1 specimen (Brown-Cream) OldVern sorry, I couldn't resist ... They would only require the old logos replacement with C&PRR ones Plus several vintage freight wagons (12T boxcar etc...), all already ingame. Cabview Chinnor-Princes Risborough, BR Class 121 "Bubble Car". I hope this was helpful and I wish you a good week! Caravatt.
Let me see one segment of your route is actually the just trains simulator classic chiltern main line. The ideal solution here is actually having it's maker just trains remake it for trains sim world
JTs Chiltern Line DLC in TSC is pretty poor aside from the Metropolitan Line. I'm sure they'd do a far better job in TSW but it's a real shame that they never updated it and their Great Western Mainline to the standards shown in their later TSC releases.
Yeah, that JT creation doesn't seem to do justice to their skills! I'll start by saying I've never played it... But it seems to be stuck in the early days of TSC! Back on topic, I'd say I wouldn't mind at all if JT will build this ! But I think DTG is more likely (as core route of a new iteration?).
I think that the Chiltern route would be incredible. They could always start by creating the Metropolitan Line or vice versa and then build the other route. This would be a great example of a route that is worth a first time purchase so long as it is set in the modern day
Yes, absolutely! Modern day mandatory! Maybe 10-12 years ago? With the 67s and Class 172 instead of the 168/3s (I love the old white-blue livery).
You are spot on if JT remade both for TSW 5 expect it to be like Carlisle Citadel to Preston/Ormskirk route hopping main line
