If the rumours are to be believed, the Nintendo Switch 2 will be shown off in a teaser trailer on Wednesday, 23 October 2024.

A release in May 2025, coinciding with the opening of Super Nintendo World at Universal Studios Hollywood is also rumoured.

    Leaked specs include …
    • 12GB RAM with possibly more than the Xbox Series S being available for games i.e. not used by the OS.
    • 256GB of internal storage.
    • As powerful as a PS4 Pro / Xbox One X.
Maybe TSW could be on the Switch 2 at some point?

Interesting. Wish Nintendo would just release their games on Steam or their own platform for anything other than just Nintendo Consoles.

Yep. Having them on the PlayStation (with Trophies) would be awesome. The thing is, barring a few missteps, Nintendo consoles sell unbelievably well and make them a fortune. Whilst that’s happening, I guess they’ll keep doing their own thing.

I’m quite looking forward to the Switch 2. I really like the Switch as a portable console (have never docked mine, in fact I think the dock is still in the box). It’s been ideal for travelling, you can fit a lot of games on it, the battery life is great. They have lots of sales and they seem to attract indie developers.

But even if it’s a massive spec jump for the switch, it’s still going to be well behind other consoles so I’m really not sure what Nintendo are aiming at. It’s probably going to sell really well anyway and although I’m unlikely to pre order, I’ll probably get one eventually as I just really like handheld consoles and it’s something new. Probably when they release a new Animal Crossing. I’ve wasted hours on that game on DS and Switch.

Personally I doubt we’ll see TSW on it. I think it will still be under powered for that and at this point I wouldn’t want it anyway.

Nintendo never care about specs. They have a real talent for being able to develop great looking games with mediocre specs. It’s really quite impressive how The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom performs on the current Switch given the immense size of the overworld. Talking of Zelda, Nintendo are rumoured to be working on an enhanced version of Breath of the Wild for Switch 2.

I might actually buy TSW if it came on the Switch. I remember having Densha De Go Final on the PSP and it was quite neat

If the Switch 2 has the power of the PS4 Pro, unless there is a technical reason why it won’t run (DLC limitations etc), TSW should be able to work on it. I think the amount of DLC and the storage capacity might be the achilles heel.

I wouldn’t mind at the very least a “TSW Lite”, consisting of just a couple routes optimized to run well on the Switch 2. Though I suppose if it’s got better specs than a PS4, it could handle all of the routes. A surprising amount of that could fit on 256 GB I bet, especially if compressed well.

I’m just excited for the Switch 2 in general though. Nintendo makes some of the best games in the business. Perhaps we could see a Mario Kart 9 in the launch year?

A new Mario Kart game is expected to be a launch title and, if the rumours are true, will be shown on Wednesday. It supposedly features new characters from Zelda, Star Fox, F-Zero and Pikmin.

It's ironic that the Switch is the one and only contemporary console where it's actually a much nicer experience playing the games emulated on PC than on original hardware, with solid locked 60fps and no frametime stutter (looking at YOU, Echoes of Wisdom). I've said it before and will say it again, the trick to tackling piracy is to offer a better experience buying it through official channels than the pirates get. Official Steam releases for the likes of the various Zelda games would absolutely eat into the existing PC market for Switch emulators.

I guess the rumours about a Switch 2 unveil today were as reliable as a chocolate teapot.

As far as I can tell nobody with credibility has really rumored anything about a reveal this week, a few industry people said they expected a reveal this year, but that's about the most. And even then a lot of well known insiders who'd normally be hinting at something happening a week or two out have been dead silent. And frankly when you consider they've got a Mario & Luigi game coming out in another two or so weeks they probably want to let that get some time to shine first.

Frankly January seems way more likely, Nintendo currently doesn't have much slated beyond Mario & Luigi, the remaster of DKC Returns is set for January, but that's about it. Metroid Prime 4 is technically on there as well, but that only has a vague '2025' date. and they haven't show off that game in great detail yet either. Nintendo will need to detail their lineup at that point, and they've confirmed they'll reveal the next system before March,
I don't think ironic's the right term, realistically I don't see why you'd expect great emulation for PS5 or Xbox Series. Or for PCs to be playing them noticeably improved when the PS5 & Xbox Series are considerably more powerful machines.. Emulator development for prior versions of those systems have always been slower than Nintendo consoles, Xbox emulators in particular has always been developed at a pace that make glaciers look like the McLaren F1.

And frankly there really isn't any real need to emulate them, at least not to the same extent as Nintendo consoles. Xbox has been developing PC versions in tandem since MSFS, which makes a Series emulator kind of pointless. And most PS5 games are timed exclusives, with the intention of doing PC versions two or so years on. Realistically the only real heavy hitter I can think of that's a true PS5 exclusive's the Demon Soul's remake, and even that I believe is lined up for a PC port based on the couple year old Nvidia Geforce database leak.

The irony would specifically be in how the nototiously litigious Nintendo chose to explicitly build a system where pirates running emulated ROMs get a better experience than paying customers.

The thing about how MS release stuff simultaneously on PC, and even Sony are doing so with a delay, makes my point even more, Nintendo could do so, for that potential untapped market, but they are seemingly content not going to that well and instead just fighting endless legal battles with those who are catering to it.

I bought a Switch Lite recently just to scratch my mobile gaming itch, it's a great system, so many good games and lots of sales. Golf Story for example is a great little RPG, cost me £2.49.

That’s what I love about the Switch. So many cheap Indy games that you can pick up for very little and play for a couple of hours, and even if they are no good, you’ve usually got your money’s worth.

I remember picking up both sky force games in a sale for very little and I’ve played them both for many hours.

To get back on Topic, I hope that when the Switch 2 does come out, we will get a new Skyforce and a new Animal Crossing. That would make me buy one.

It's not that great, it literally is a glorified oled for probably the ps5's price tag. It's gonna flop, I'm saying it now, it will flop, look at the Wii & Wii u, it's the same thing.

I seem to recall people saying the first switch would flop...

Also wow, ever heard of the phrase "never judge a book by it's cover"?

They've literally only revealed what it looks like. We've got no idea what it's specs are, nor what features it may have.

We have over a year's worth of hardware info on the T239 processor, so there's a decent amount can be extrapolated from that about its capabilities. Plus there are shipping manifests that have basically locked in the projection of 12GB of RAM and the type they are using, based on the quantities they've been buying of that particular memory.

That is fair, but just by the name, the Switch 2, gives such deja vu with the Wii & Wii U.

I've owned nearly every console since the SEGA Master System at some point in it's lifespan, so I'll pick-up a Switch 2 even if it's awful.

Can't really complain about whatever the price will be, as I just dropped £4500 on an Exa-Arcadia, which is basically a glorified Intel i3-9100.

My only question is, can the Nintendo Switch 2 run Crysis? :)

I always said I'd potentially pick up a Switch 2 once backcompat was confirmed, to be able to get better performance in some of the first party original Switch games that run pretty poorly. But it's not happening any time soon, not until the inevitable OLED model is released.

I really don't think specs are important when it comes to Nintendo consoles. It's never been their style to focus on power when it comes to new consoles. The Switch wasn't much more powerful than the Wii U (and still inferior to the PS4), yet it was a success because it had unique features and a selection of fun and innovative games. Remember that the Wii was practically on par with the previous GameCube specs wise, yet was a massive success due to the mass appeal of motion controls.

As with any console launch, the only thing that really matters is the games. Nintendo have never needed powerful consoles to deliver some of the best titles of the last few decades.

This really isn't all that similar to the Wii U, I always see people focus on the name and marketing, but IMO that actually had little to do with it. Keep in mind the 3DS had the exact same issues, yet managed to be turned around by Nintendo rather effectively. There's multiple other things the Wii U had going against it, including-

-Most obviously a weird tablet controller which massively inflated the cost of the system that even Nintendo couldn't figure out much good use for, much less third parties, nothing more needs to be said on that.

-Using the old and rather foreign computer architecture compared to other consoles, making it harder and more expensive for third parties to develop for. This was such a bad issue that Nintendo notably ended up switched to Nvidia after they had pitched their architecture. And this was despite the fact they had intended the Wii U to be used as the base for multiple consoles going forward. They even had done extensive prototyping on a version of the Switch which was based on that architecture.

-Nintendo's own handheld division, which due to the need to make games for both, resulted in massive software droughts on the Wii U due to spread out resources.

-Finally related to that last point the 3DS had so many games that were installments in the same series, the Wii U really didn't have much that wasn't on 3DS. If anything the 3DS actually had the edge seeing as Animal Crossing, Fire Emblem, and Kirby all largely stayed off the Wii U that gen, all while receiving highly regarded games on the 3DS. There's a reason Nintendo choose to focus solely on a single console going forward after their struggles the prior gen.

Worth noting that as far as power goes IMO the best indication is that Microsoft reportedly are planning tons of releases on this system, and that's up to and including MSFS 2024. That more than anything shows there's probably some rather competitive tech under it. Also I think it needs to be said that the Tegra X1 in the current Switch was actually a very solid chipset back at launch. It only really seems as dated as it is because of how long the Switch itself has lasted.

Honestly given the issues the industry at the moment and the general trend toward going to multi platform software are having I'm expecting a lot of companies who've ignored the Switch will end up releasing games for the successor.

And this time around is why we can pretty confidently estimate the capabilities of the Switch 2, as the hardware is a fairly known quantity. We know how much the raw power has increased, and crucially we can extrapolate how well it's going to handle DLSS or whatever bespoke version of it they are using. And thus how much smoother some of the eye bleedingly badly performing Switch releases of the last year that were pretty clearly undeniably targeting a cross-platform 2024 Switch 2 release are going to run on the new hardware, as well as how much better future ports of multiplatform titles are going to scale to it than they did on the previous Switch. They're obviously being conservative, with nothing near the sheer hardware clout that the more expensive high end handhelds go for in order to deliver smooth 60fps gameplay in contemporary PC releases, but the hardware like the T239 is still clearly designed to be punching above its weight. While it in theory possesses hardware necessary for frame gen it likely won't employ it as it's a generation behind the Lovelace GPUs Nvidia decided were good enough to handle it, but DLSS is going to be a core component of said punching above its weight, as it's always been more effective than the FSR alternatives used in all the AMD-based handhelds. Their choice regarding memory and the T239's FDE block also suggests they're looking into ways of making it more efficiently load game assets, likely eliminating load times in backcompat Switch games, but crucially allowing for better compression in newer titles. Again, more efficient use of less high end physical hardware.

I will still be quite surprised if that is running locally, and not just running via XCloud from a Microsoftdata centre. My £750 Ayaneo handheld is beefier on most fronts than Switch 2 and can mostly match up to the Series S versions of games. I am unconvinced the Switch 2 could manage that given how much cooler they're going to want it running not to wipe out the battery in an hour like running CP77 or TSW will do to my Ayaneo.

No, when it comes to flying planes, I am still holding out for Nintendo finally realising what they should have done some time ago, and GIVING US A NEW PILOTWINGS, DAMMIT. That would be a system seller for me right there.

Anyone else think the suspension on the new Mario Kart is going to be a new feature? The springs seem really... defined/prominent...

I do hope a Switch 2 patch fixes Sonic Generations' migraine-inducing 31.5fps cap.

It's absurd when folks have hacked the rom to run at 60fps on unmodded Switch 1 hardware, and I can only imagine a 30 cap was conceived to be in line with Shadow Generations' cap in Switch for consistency, so players would not notice the jarring shift between the two and think less of the newer game, but 31.5 is just frame pacing hell.

Actually it doesn’t. Switch 2 clearly defines the next console as the second Switch. The Wii U confused people, with many thinking the GamePad was a Wii accessory. I think Nintendo have learned some very important lessons here and I think the Switch 2 will be very successful, especially given it is backwards compatible.

Incidentally, the current Switch is now or very soon will be the best selling console of all time. Not bad considering people were predicting Nintendo would ditch the console business after the failure of Wii U.

Yep. Games are key. Nintendo know how to get the most out of their hardware and clearly aren’t interested in matching or beating the competition. Nintendo always do Nintendo. Usually this works out great for them barring a few missteps.

Last I checked in December it was just about overtaking the DS for the second place spot to PS2. I know last month it overtook lifetime PS2 sales for the USA, but still had not globally. My guess would be Nintendo produced just enough units before shifting to Switch 2 manufacturing to take that top spot once the rest of them finally leave store shelves and hold it for a good long while, since the next ten places are consoles no longer in production like the Wii or 360.

The original Switch will likely remain on sale at least a short while after Switch 2 releases. Release date is expected around June/July 2025. It will likely see a price cut at this point too, so I will be very surprised if it doesn’t cement itself as the best selling console of all time in the near future. It deserves it too. The Switch is quite innovative and whilst ‘lacking power’, it has had some remarkably big and impressive titles. I can’t wait to see what the Switch 2 can deliver.
