I decided to try the LIRR dlc again, and quickly remembered why I gave up on it in the 1st place. Maybe somebody here can tell me what I'm doing wrong... or is it a problem with the sim?

I was under the 80 mph speed limit, and under the approaching 60 mph speed limit, but it still gave me the penalty brake. I just don't get what happened.

    Thanks

After watching the video and looking at the Dash Speedo, it went from 70 to 40 MPH, while the track monitor at the top right on your Hud at the top left never indicated a speed reduction. The Penalty was that you were at 55 MPH, and the track speed was reduced to 40 MPH.

Thanks. I have noticed that the HUD speed limit often doesn't match what the train is saying. Up till now it hasn't caused any problems.
In this case it makes the route unplayable because of the forced safety systems.
    Thanks for catching that.

That’s wasn’t a penalty brake to begin with but just the safety system braking for the speed reduction. The penalty brake kicked in seven seconds later because you did not put the controller into a braking position. You need to do that as well as acknowledging the alarm.

So when the train starts braking by itself for a speed reduction the first thing you should do is apply some brake yourself until you are below the indicated speed on the display as well as acknowledging the alarm. That way you won’t get a penalty brake.

It just went to 40 out of nowhere.... can't really prepare for that, and when it happens your like WTF the HUD says 80, and the next speed limit is 60 .....I'm under that and decelerating.
Now that I know its broke, I could learn to slow down for the parts of the route where that happens, but I'm not going to, and nobody should have to.

Hopefully they will fix it someday.

thanks, I do appreciate the reply!

    * I will add that the only reason this is an issue is because of the forces safety systems. The HUD speed limit differs from what the train shows on many routes. I learned to follow the HUD because thats what the speed limit penalty are based on. This route though adds that extra complication, and it just shouldn't be that way. It's unplayable as far as I'm concerned.

with LIRR is about route knowledge. once you know all the areas you can anticipate the speed reductions and avoid the safety systems to kick in.

I would say that in reality, every route is about route knowledge. The actual issue here is that the HUD doesn't display the correct speed limit. The forced safety systems just exposes it.

I'd love to learn the route, but that takes repetition. If they fix the HUD I'll likely play it often and learn the route just like I have with all the others.

Thanks again for the replies. I do appreciate it. At least I know what the deal is now. I can just play the other routes and not drive my self crazy over something that isn't my fault.

I just want to add that it looks like the signaling speed limit was reduced, not the track speed which means it would be hard to adjust the HUD to take account of this.
The first few times I used the route I got penalty brake applications, but I think it's best to acknowledge then brake as opposed to brake then acknowledge. Matt did a video explaining how to use the safety systems.
    EDIT: Video link:

    I hope this helps.

Hey thanks man, I'll check it out.

btw, what is the difference between signaling speed and track speed? Not sure I understand why they would be different. Does signaling speed have to do with traffic? Like is it slowing you down so you don't hit a train in front of you. Or is just meant to irritate the hell out you. JK

Yes, that's right. The signalling speed will slow you down for traffic ahead and perhaps also slow speed junctions. It's worth noting that you can enter the same block as another train at 15mph and pull up right behind it. That may be one of the reasons why safety systems are enforced on this route.
