Learned how to use Clothoid Easements for some odd curves.

 

I've been avoiding going there up until now but tried playing with that this morning, with some slight success.
Does it simply come down to setting the desired line speed then choosing which of the three displayed curve paths to use for each segment?
I can't help thinking there's probably be more to it than just that.

 

I find its more like laying a normal curve but adjusting the easement and the curve (red guide). If dragging the easement guide from a curve it can be dragged out to a point where it'll stop and switch to red that's the end of the easement for that curve speed.

You do need to set the speed of the line to get tighter or wider curves.

Pulling the easement in one direction increases the curve and the other lowers the easements curve, both ways at dragging far enough will sudden stop and switch to a red curve again this means the easement is at its end and can have a striaight attached to it.

The only thing that clothoid easements don't have is snapping to straights.

Here's an example of the curve from Mexborough to Swinton using the clothoid easement.

The pink sections are easements, this took a while to figure out but it works when done right.

Sorry for only just seeing this development, but this route you're creating is a project i really would love DTG to pick up on like they have with a few other 3rd party projects and eventually release it in TSW for everyone.

it's such a great choice of route with almost unmatched variety, even if DTG were to only select the Sheffield to Doncaster section, that alone has such varied gameplay, scenery and possibilities.

The sheer number of passenger and freight services this route would provide is immense, as well as the huge variety of start/end points and calling patterns even just between Sheffield and Doncaster, which are two large end point stations in themselves

I've messaged this so i can watch this thread with interest, love what you've created so far and this is 100% something that DTG Alex DTG JD should keep an eye on as a future option to introduce to TSW in the same way that the Mildmay Line and Whitby-Middlesbrough Route have been!

Just to update, easements are coming along well, but it is taking a while to go through areas to cleanup.
From there I'll be sorting gradients and superelevations and testing each updated section.

Sorry for no new major updates on the project. It's justing taking a while to redo sections.


So Chapeltown route, stocksbridge, dore and totley, woodhouse and darnall route, and down from masborough (old rotherham station) route, are getting sorted for easements.

 

Minor delay on updates, after moving backup drive to a new backup computer it decided it'd just die.
Luckily I had an old drive that had previous data on it, fortunately nothing TSW Project / 3d related was lost, actually I don't think I've lost anything important tbh.

Now this means I'm going to be slow to update for the next week as I'm waiting for a new hard-drive to come to replace my aging main project drive, aka documents, images, videos, etc.

Update: Everything is backup and running properly now.

Currently redid a section of Doncaster Station due track problems, this was related to the high speed line not being straight, easements have been sorted for doncaster station.

All station will recieve the easement treatment.

Seeing chapeltown is cool, the fact im getting even a small section of my local line is super cool! Great work so far,

 

honestly if this ever got picked up by DTG to be released for console it would be incredible, even if just part of what you've created got picked up by DTG was released as part of the came for us on PS5/XBox.. love this so much!!

 

Currently reworking Sheffield station tracks as they were messy and needed cleaning up. The gradients are a pain to work with at this paticular station.

• Meadowhall to Chapeltown Tracks are nicely easemented and everything else =)
• Still need to do some checks on the line from sheffield to darnall and woodhouse and masborough station down to the woodhouse section too.
• Sheffield to Dore and Totley is progressing just need to work on easementing a section of the line.
• Stocksbridge to Sheffield Victoria still needs easements and will probably take a while due to poor imagery for that area.

 

Did you get anywhere with creating a video on the easements? I'd be very keen to watch it as I'm struggling to rack my brain!

I was rightly afraid that I'm going to have to relay track across my entire route

 

Not entirely, remember always try auto first if the curve looks uniform.

 

Sheffield Station tracks relaid and all graidents and easements have been sorted.

 

Was able to find some information regarding the new track layout at dore & totley.


Almost finished with this section.

 

Stocksbridge to Sheffield Victoria was a lot easier to easement than i thought so that's all done today, just need to readd a few tracks and gradients and that area is done.

Went back to the Tinsley section of tracks to cleanup some areas and relay some easements due to uncomfortable drive between rotherham and sheffield.

From there I just need to double check between darnall and woodhouse and masborough and woodhouse area and I believe it's almost done.

A little adjustment and relaying of yard tracks along brightside.
And final areas will be Tinsley Yards, Rotherham Yards and up from Swinton to Thurnscoe.

 

Another cleanup and relay of track in progress, Darnall to Woodhouse (some of the tracks where to messy and not a great drive so I've ripped up the track and in process of relaying.

 

Most gradients, super elevations and easements are mostly done now.
Currently doing some signal laying around Gascoigne Wood Yards. Lots of interesting signals there.

 

Do you have any advice on how to smooth out gradients, I have several sections where the lidar is so inconsistent, for example within 5 sections of track I have 0.5 upward then 0.8 downward to 1.2 downward to 0.2 upward and so on.

Would be good to know if there's a best practice to fix this?

I'd rather not have to go through each section to manually adjust everything if there's a better way.

 

Unfortunately its not an easy task, its slow and time consuming. I just start at one end and slowly follow the track adjusting gradients that are close to the terrain.

 

Gascoigne Wood Yards

Almost finished placing signals in this area.

I'd like to update about this area as its only this section of the yard and just behind the camera is the end of the landscape and three portals. Right now I'm going through some personal stuff so I won't be adding more work of going through the lidar rebuilding in QGIS.

Maybe after the situtation has settled in march I'll see what I could do.

Update: Timetable has been updated and all services currently finish correctly, LNER and Freight services are mostly done but need some minor tweaking, Northern Services will be added next and services that operate at sheffield.

Update 18/02/2025: Have merged layer 150 and 158 together as the services interact with each other.

Layer 170/195/333 have been left seperate layers.
This is going to be a slow process so updates will be super slow.

Luckily I'm organising the layers so you don't need all the DLCs, but it'd be preferred to have atleast 150/158/170/Azuma trains including Class 66.

Material work mostly, road splines will be worked on at some point.
