    Hey guys/girls

Here is a question, how come there are no station staff about in stations? I know they wouldn't take up too much as there wouldn't have to be that many per station. Static or moving?

It is surprising we got trainspotters before station staff.

It might be useful to have some dispatchers at busy stations screaming at passengers to stand behind the yellow line just like in real life. In TSW it would actually be effective though, considering how often TSW passengers love to walk off platforms.

It wouldn't be effective since they would still walk into traffic....

For modern stuff could be issues with replicating uniforms, but something generic would do. For older routes oughtn't to be such an issue.

There are ticket office staff in some stations (rare these days) and people working in station buffets.

I seen a passenger with an orange jacket and he looked the part, a generic figure would be an idea or if TSW still have an open line of communication with a rail company, they could ask?

That's a good idea, can we also have the dispatchers scream at the passengers to get off the train as it terminates here. I said it before, TSW need to add a kick and punch button when it comes to dealing with passengers. :)

I couldn’t see this working. As they would yell abuse at us for leaving our train unattended for long periods, whilst we go fix all the broken news stands around the station.

This could work. I don't see any dialogue being a thing but static uniformed staff and dispatchers I think could easily be implemented.

There are static railway workers in high vis jackets and pants, so why not station staff?

On the subject of station personnel, even though not the era I would still like to see a homage to the station cats Felix (R.I.P) and Bolt at Huddersfield on NTP.

Because then people would complain they were stationary. Then if they were animated people would complain they "don't like the person working at that station in real life because I go through there every day."

But no one complains about the static workers we already have. Kinda defeats your argument.

Probably due to fears aslef might get involved.

They do though. And it was already an issue in this thread. Hey, if you want them fine, but I'd say fix the passengers jumping onto the train tracks FIRST, before worrying about adding more NPCs.

Glass half full...half empty type of thing. Yes, you can split hairs over static station staff not moving or if station staff move they don't move the correct way. It is only a suggestion and you are drilling holes in it already, anything that can add to the experience can't be a bad thing.

    Its all about immersion.

Sure, they may be static and just stand around doing nothing. But them being there is enough.

I think one issue is that it would have to be something that works the same across all routes like conductor mode. Station staff would only be realistic for UK routes. Here in the US, station staff is not a thing. Some railroads still have staff inside the station buildings to sell tickets to people who don't want to use a mobile app or credit card, but many railroads now only have that at major termini. Chicago's Metra has actually gotten rid of all station staff period. If you want a ticket, you buy it at a kiosk or on the app even at the downtown termini. All ticket window staff have been moved to customer service call centers. As for platform staff, that's not a thing at all in the US. The only exceptions are for major Amtrak termini where there are still staff to control entry to platforms and drive baggage to the baggage car. Commuter rail doesn't have platform staff though. Everything is done by the conductors. So if TSW had platform staff, it would have to be unrealistically applied to US routes too.

As in, the inclusion of station staff would likely be a core feature, rather than them being added individually to routes.

Yes, I interpreted the post correctly. My point was that there's no evidence for that being the case.

If its a core feature it's pretty safe to say it'd be on all routes.

Whether or not that actually happens is a different question, but it is assumed to be the case, as a core feature usually impacts everything in some way.

RMT or TSSA, ASLEF is drivers.

I mean its probably not too hard to do, there are plenty of photos of people in railway uniform out there, heck on the steam routes you could even have a porter pushing a barrow loaded with cases. I definitely think it would add some immersion to the routes, so if there are copyright issues on the modern ones fair enough but shouldn't be an issue with the 80s routes and earlier. Although the Kingmoor shed foreman in the straw boater made me howl with laughter the first time I saw him (JT WCML Carlisle-Preston scenarios), thankfully the secondmen in ballet slippers seen to have vanished from the cabs which is nice, either that or I haven't played those routes for a while.

Thanks for all that information, I don't know anything about US rail, I assumed railway stations in the US would have station staff, I think it is very sad they don't have them.

Of course not all UK stations have platform staff either, so train despatch is done by the Guard or in the case of DOO the driver.

I don't think you understand what a "core feature" is.

So, what is a core feature then? If you really knew, you'd have said so by now.

Lighting is a core feature. Passengers are a core feature. They are present everywhere, and are found on every route (or should be, where appropriate particularly passengers). That's what a core feature is: something that can be found everywhere.

So, yes, I have an understanding of what a core feature is.

By that basic logic, station staff would be a core feature and present on every route.

All stations have passengers, correct? It's pretty safe to assume the same would be for station staff, because they are both present at stations. The only notable difference would be what they're wearing.

Indeed, realistically in the game you'd probably program to take no part in train despatch to make life easier. But someone in a uniform walking down the platform closing the doors on slam door stock would be truly awesome but is probably a distant dream.

But stations don't have passengers magically. They need to be implemented on a per-route basis.

Never said they did. But they're still there, and are on every route they should be.

Having passengers at a station, regardless of implementation, is a core feature. Because every route with a train station has them, doesn't matter if they are added route by route. They are there all the time. Therefore, a core feature, something that's there all the time. Station staff would be the same.

Don't even know why I'm bothering. You're clearly just looking to argue and its not worth my time.

You do realise that if the developers of a route want there not to be passengers at a specific station they can do so?
