I was looking at a stream regarding the Mildmay Line that released 1 or 2 weeks ago, where the developer from Inncedible Trains answered questions. One certain question got me listening and thinking. It was answered that Mildmay features railsinging while no other route does. As it seems this feature isnt a new developed one, but something we already have ingame for a long time but inactive. What im asking, Why? Why is it deactivated? For me this little extra sound adds so much to the immersion of the game (see Train Sim Classic). Its stated that many dislike it, but why? Everyone wants realism and immersion in Tsw, but this so important feature gets hated on? It maybe some years old, but the quality of the sound we have in TS is good enough, so why not use it in Tsw too? We have a soundmod that adds this to a loco and its a night and day difference on how the experience of this train passing by is. What do you all think about this? If its ingame, then it shouldnt be too difficult to re-add it, right?
I've been thinking recently I don't think I've ever heard it in TSW. I imagine it's disabled to allow other sounds to play, UE only allows I think 16 (or 32?) Sounds to be played at once.
Even if the maximum sound output is true, it seems to work fine for Mildmayline, even that its running trough the inner City of London which should have many sounds. Additionaly, it works for most TS Classic route too. I just never heard people complaining about it, especially if its a good feature to have.
If a train passes by a station or anywhere you are standing, you could close your eyes and hear that the rail next to you starts to echo because of the train heading towards the position. It gets louder the faster the train is, so you can hear it very good on high speed routes. This sound has many namens but i heard many calling it railsinging or railecho so i just named it like that.
It should be a thing but not at the expense of getting more reverb in or extending the track audio to include rumble going over bridges etc.
Oh, so that’s why it is called “singing”. Thank, good to know. I always feel that some sounds of going over rail joints are too silent, not to mention the railsinging
Yeah, but it would need to implemented properly be unique to each train. I noticed on Mildmay you hear the sound even though no trains are moving and it seems to be attached to the route ambience rather than the 378 itself as you can’t hear when you put the 378 on WCMLS. It should sound less chirpy and more tingly
I'd love to actually have rail singing activated. It's always been there, but just not activated. Hoping the devs are looking at this feature.
I'm guessing it could be quite complex to implement. Probably quite a few variables that affect the pitch and volume of the effect, such as train speed and weight, whether under power, coasting or braking. But still, they should be able to solve that.
So that sounds like it's a feature you'd never need when driving a train. Just for people who want to sit around and put their ear to the rail? I can see why it's not a high priority.
One of those features that would be nice, if there weren't 101 things that need doing or sorting already.
It would also be complicated as hell to be "accurate" with. Would vary by train size, speed, track composition, ballast composition, geographic location (inside, outside, proximity to the rail) and even air density. All for something that 99% of the time isn't even audible to most people. For a game that often can't get things like signs correct that's a pretty tall order for something that won't even be noticed.
Waiting at a station for loading passengers, fast trains overtaking you, just the use of the outside camera, etc. are all categorys that would profit from this change in many ways. For many Tsw is more than just to drive a train without leaving the cab and this even affects TS even tho its a game without the ability to move free on foot. TS is the example on how to implement this the more or less right way and the same can be done with Tsw. To do it, so its calculated and 100% realistic for every single different train is something not even TS did and not something you would notice anyways. On the other side its extremely annoying to not have this sound at all. Maybe a on/off setting for that would be the key?
Literally you sat in a station with the window open and a fast train approaches on an adjacent track, you'd hear it.
Oh yeah I’d like this feature to be spread on other routes, railsinging or the Star Wars blaster sound as I like to call it, will add more realism. Same for the catenary wires if it can be put into TSW as well.
