In my case, I had my compile button grayed out too, until I linked my route map in one of the details of the timetable, or perhaps it was a route data asset? Sorry for being so vague, but I just woke up, and it's been a little while. I won't be able to elaborate for a couple days (work keeps me busy,) so hopefully someone else sees this and knows what I'm talking about. It's annoying because there's literally no feedback from the editor to say that this was why I couldn't compile.

It's the route definition you need to link in the Timetable Defaults. Also, when you start the editor, always make sure you open the route before you open the timetable.
