It must be that your VRAM is maxed out, that is the only explanation.

Unusual with it being an RTX4070 8gb laptop card? (32gb System RAM and 14th gen i9 processor).

Just pushed a little harder this afternoon by installing the Ultra engine.ini file alongside the High Godmode.sav and London Brighton ran fine apart from a couple of spots at Clapham and Victoria where fps dropped into the 20s but that was with r.Streaming.FullyLoadUsedTextures=1 so will try again with it set to 0 and if that improves the fps I'll also move the Godmode.sav to Ultra also (with the intensive routes still using their medium Godmode.sav entries.

8GB is probably the bare minimum you can get away with. I had over 20GB VRAM usage on Fulda the other day

I’m looking more into this. I haven’t seen an issue but I’m aware it could be causing problems for other people that weren’t apparent during testing.

I will update the mod when Cardiff releases with some additional changes and improvements and revert all pre-sets to 0 subject to further testing tomorrow.

I don’t think is is the cause but it isn’t helping. In theory it shouldn’t have any effect at all and, as I said, I haven’t seen any detrimental effects myself which makes it hard to diagnose.

I’d only see 20GB though because I have it available. Your PC and the game engine should work with what you have, it isn’t going to use that much VRAM for everyone.

I’m just running on Frankfurt - Fulda with the texture streaming parameter set to 0 (i.e. entirely off as opposed to fully load all textures at route start and utilise what is needed) but for me at least it makes no difference, my VRAM usage is currently at 19.5GB but that is fine as I have 24GB and my PC is managing it, as should yours. It’s also worth mentioning I’m using Kat’s better shadows mod which is virtually certain to be bumping up my VRAM usage

    To quote that other thread for background on what it does;

This will keep the streaming feature active but also keep max resolution textures in memory only for the ones which are being used for rendering, not for the whole scene. So it’s like an intermediate step to avoid disabling the texture streaming completely and uses less memory but you will still notice the texture reloading the first time you use an object

Clearly this command is causing problems for some however, so I’ll revert it. The good news is that even with it set to 0 the route is absolutely smooth, zero stutters or hitching.

    Cardiff releases today so I’ll likely update the mod in the morning with that included plus the other improvements I’ve made since the last update. These changes are;

    • Further reduced the infamous TSW shimmering to imperceptible levels with some new commands. I will never be able to get rid of it entirely but it’s 99% banished now. FPS neutral.
    • Made colouring improvements to Midland Mainline (I’ve also just updated this mod | TSW5 | Train Lighting & LOD Fixes - Train Sim Community to mend the EMT Class 158 cabin lighting LOD. This was fixed by SHG a while back but has somehow broken again), the newly updated West Somerset Railway, Frankfurt - Fulda, East Coast Mainline and a minor change to the bloom level on Mittendwaldbahn

After many months of trying multiple combos of settings. Finally tweaked the system.

For the record I have an RTX 3080 Coupled to a AMD 5800x 32GB RAM.

Sweet spot found finally after almost giving up.

First issue was Resolution, tried for months to keep 4k (3840p or higher) Dropped it to 1920x1080. There was also an output setting on my windows that was kicking the screen out at 60hz, changed that to 120hz. For display I use a 55inch LG OLED with GSYNC on board which can cope with 120hz.

Lighting enhancement set up to Ultra. All suggested addon mods put in shadows, rain, snow etc. However the one thing I havent used is Lossless Scaling. It rubber bands the FPS and have found that TSW runs smoother without it. FPS Wise I am now getting 60 to 119 (Capped at 119 in game) In some built up areas I drop to 30 to 40 which is ok. Only Frankfurt drops below 30 on occasions due to it being a massive tile with a huge amount of trains. I also have the sky set to Ultra which looks stunning. Almost tempted to give the beast mode a spin but to be honest Ultra looks amazing. Even thoroughly enjoyed a Glasgow to Edinburgh early sunrise run despite Rivets poor buildings in places.

Absolute game changer. Best run was a midday on Semmeringbahn. Find the drop to 1920x1080 had little overall impact on eye candy but massive performance gain. Thanks to Jetwash for the hard work!

    Morning all

Version 2.1 is now available on TSC here

TSW 5 | Lighting & Visual Quality Enhancement v2.1 - Train Sim Community

    and includes the following changes;
    • Updated to include Cardiff City Network
    • Further reduced the infamous TSW shimmering to imperceptible levels with some new commands. I will never be able to get rid of it entirely but it’s 99% banished now. FPS neutral. Unfortunately there is some hellish shimmering on the OHLE at Cardiff central that I can't get rid of. Other than that, on every other route I've tested there is a vast improvement
    • Made colouring improvements to;
      - Midland Mainline
      - the newly updated West Somerset Railway
      - Frankfurt - Fulda
      - East Coast Mainline
      - Minor change to the bloom level on Mittendwaldbahn
    • Despite extensive testing which didn't show any problems in this respect, I've had reports that for some v2.0 was causing performance issues due to a change I had made to texture loading and memory. Even though I haven't seen it myself and can't replicate it, I've reverted the change to match v1.6. From the reports I've had from people struggling with the issue the fix more than doubles their FPS in certain problem areas
    • Finally, an edit to the manual regarding Lens Flare. The game is deleteing lines with // in-front of them (which I'd not seen before) so I have made that a simple copy and paste if it still interests anyone
    Enjoy!

I don't know how many of you use this (I know some people are confused about how it differs from this mod thinking it was the same thing, it isn’t!) but this has had a few updates recently too, including fixing the broken lighting on both Cardiff units

In the latest version, the distance appears blurry during a journey. As soon as the train stops, everything is displayed normally and sharply. Motion blur is enabled in TSW.

Have found my nemesis route now. Frankfurt Fulda on a run between Hanau and Frankfurt Hbf UE crash to desktop about 10 mins out of Hanau. Tested many times now and only doesn't crash so far if lighting pack removed. Not so bothered as plenty of other DLC to use. Maybe settings for Frankfurt to Fulda are pushing my machine?

Absolutely it must be as I don’t get a crash. As I suggested in the manual, I recommend you use notepad++ to copy and paste the Frankfurt-Fulda pre-set from the next pre-set down (so High —> Medium) and overwrite the one that is too much for your machine in the GodMode ini for Fulda.

Can you also confirm you have the latest version of the mod and updated both files when you installed it?

How much Vram do you have on your video card? This route is quite hungry with Vram and even thought it shouldn't it can crash if it completely fills up
I have noticed 14 Gb Vram used with the Ultra preset for example.

10gb on mine (I think) away from PC right now so will check that tomorrow. Must be noted though I run TSW at 1080x1920 resolution 100% scaled. I did for ages try to run it at 4K and got mixed results with different settings of lighting pack. RTX 3080 is the Graphics card.

    Evening all,

    v2.2 now available on TSC

TSW 5 | Lighting & Visual Quality Enhancement v2.2 - Train Sim Community

    IMG_4356.jpeg

    v2.2

    • Spoorlijn Zwolle - Groningen added to the mod
    • A further adjustment to the colouring on Cardiff City Network to improve the lighting under cloudy skies
    • Adjustments to the lighting on Manchester Glossop to improve the look of the route
    • Amendments to the main ini's for Beast and Ultra to further improve the passenger experience and minimise the chances of seeing the same NPC pulled more than once. NPC's should pretty much all be different. Uses a little (I mean little) bit more memory hence it only being for these 2 pre-sets

Hmm if you set the textures to Ultra try on High

I also had an out of video memory crash on that route recently, and I got that on a 16GB card
What is even more strange is that even if the max streaming pool for textures was set to 8000 and 10000 GB Vram, the game still went well over any limits I set, reaching 15GB of usage on Fulda - Frankfurt. I think this the only route with this kind of behavior

Eventually I got the route running rock stable now
Beside setting textures to high you can also try this
Set this in your engine ini
    r.Streaming.FullyLoadUsedTextures=0
It might lower Vram usage and prevent the out of memory crash

Oh oke. It might be the safest that way for routes that for some reason eat lots of Vram and might cause instability

The Frankfurt - Fulda route is really the one I have the most problems...

Even after upgrading my processor to a Ryzen 5 5600x, its performance improved considerably for a good part of the route, but when I get to the Hanau area to Frankfurt I have several stutters, even using Lossless Scaling.

Is VRAM very important on this route? Since I have the RTX 4060 and I don't know if it's enough...

Something really pushes this route which is a shame as it's very well done. But maybe that's the problem. Too much detail. I can really push the boat out settings wise on other routes. Even Beast mode on the mods works ok in 1080p. Am happy so far with Ultra mod being used in 1080p and it tweaked for Fulda.

I think that the number of different trains that need to be loaded into memory together with the length and high level of detail really push the limit with the route.
Also going trough areas with lots of tracks and trains like depot add up to the performance loss
On top of that I have spotted another particularly thing, when a storm forms in the first minutes my GPU usage doubles and hits the power limit and does the same as the storm ends.

paulossj4 that Rtx 4060 should be fine, I think you should do a run with the High preset. If everything is good try the Ultra and see how it goes.

Just as fact unreal should never crash due to out of video memory issues, the memory stream manager should always unload the memory if it gets full and load new data. However this clearly is not the case and can get overloaded in some rare instances.

I’m just now moving onto TSW5 after being on TSW4 using your ini edits. I was using your "high" preset on TSW4 and was getting 100-150 FPS depending on the route at 4K without lossless scaling. I'd like to achieve the same performance in TSW5 again without lossless scaling (I can't stand the input lag it creates). Would you recommend the high or ultra ini preset and what are the main differences between those two? My specs are 7950x3d, 4090, 64GB RAM.

Frankfurt-Fulda is one of the few routes where I experience access violation memory crashes, which is quite unfortunate. I kept the beast preset of course removing the lines specific to DX12 but switched back to DX11, and the crashes stopped. Naturally, the downside is increased hitching and a reduction of about 5-10% in FPS, but honestly, I think I’d prefer it this way.

Could you please explain a bit how you did it? I have a similar problem (Frankfurt Fulda crashing 2km before Offenbach every time) and want to use a lower preset just for this one route :)
    Thank you

    Morning.

I’ll address all 3 of those in one post.

volvolover1972 Honestly, only you can determine what you’re happy with. Out of interest though, why such huge fps? In my opinion it’s not at all necessary in a sim, particularly one that is as linear as train sim. I’ve never experienced any input lag with Lossless Scaling at all so can’t help you there I’m afraid, but the fact that you’re mentioning an FPS range of 50 suggests everything wasn’t set up correctly. The base FPS has to be stable and consistent or it won’t work properly. I’m running a 4090 with Beast pre-set and 140% screen percentage. I cap the fps at 30 and use LS to double that to my monitor refresh rate of 60. My GPU operates at about 50-60% leaving plenty of headroom and keeps the noise and temps down whilst giving me an excellent visual experience, but most importantly entirely smooth. No lag, nothing.

Train Sim Society It’s almost inconceivable this mod has anything to do with a crash of that nature. We have comparable machines and I have never once had a crash on that route, any route in fact.

HOWEVER, I've literally just had a crash of a similar nature on the Dutch route and a bit of Googling suggests this crash is a long standing UE4/5 crash, often related to another program running in the background. The irony of me never having this crash and now you mention it I do! That suggests to me something has changed in one of the recent updates to the game and/or a mod or a background process is causing it. I'm as confident as I can be that the problem is not this mod, however. If you have a specific service, date, weather etc then I’m happy to take a look and see if I can recreate the problem but as I said, I’ve driven it end to end many times and never had a problem.

When did this crash start happening? I have a 100% reproducible crash in the same place on the same service approaching Groningen. This worked fine before the last update to the game so suspect the culprit lies there unfortunately

hyperlord It’s in the manual, section 7 :)

Yeah, I just want to be clear—I really don’t think the crash has anything to do with your mod or the Beast preset. From everything I’ve tested, it seems to be a DX12 issue through and through. I know you’ve mentioned this before too, and after digging around and doing a bunch of tests, it looks like those Access Violation crashes are actually pretty common with Unreal Engine 4/5 games when running in DX12. So yeah, definitely feels more like an engine-level problem than anything mod-related.

What’s funny is DX12 actually gives me the best experience overall—super smooth, amazing visuals, less hitching—it just isn’t stable for me over long sessions. I’m guessing that’s probably part of the reason Dovetail hasn’t gone all-in on DX12 yet.

As for the crash itself, it mostly happens on Frankfurt–Fulda, usually when I start in Fulda and get close to the Hanau or Frankfurt area. It’s not every time—more like once every 8 to 10 runs—but just enough to be frustrating. I’ve also had it happen on WCMLS, though way less often. And oddly enough, I’ve never had this issue on any other route, which makes me wonder if some of it comes down to how certain routes are optimized—especially the ones with a ton of layers and AI services.

I’ve ruled out everything else: Windows and drivers are all up to date, memory tests came back clean, and I’ve even run the game with literally nothing else in the background—no antivirus, no RGB software, no overlays. Still crashes in DX12. It’s not the easiest thing to reproduce either, which makes it even more annoying to troubleshoot. But yeah, based on everything I’ve seen, it really feels like it’s just DX12 being flaky on certain setups.

That said, I’m still using the Beast preset—just with the DX12-specific lines taken out—and I’m still getting the same visuals and better performance. The crashes completely stopped after switching to DX11, which pretty much confirms for me that it’s 100% a DX12 thing. Just seems to affect some system configurations more than others.

On a side note—this isn’t crash-related, just something I noticed performance-wise—I got a huge FPS boost by dropping cloud settings from Very High to Medium. Even going from Ultra (which I see from the manual isn't recommended) to Very High did not make much of a difference. I’d be running at around 70 FPS, but the second I looked up at the sky on any TOD4 route with light or moderate cloud coverage, I’d drop all the way down to 25–30 FPS. It feels like the cloud rendering might be heavier than it needs to be. That said, everything still looks amazing, and honestly, the clouds didn’t even look that different on Medium—just way better performance.

My dream setup would be a DX11-optimized version of the EP, just to avoid the DX12 headaches entirely. I’ve made my own tweaks by stripping out specific lines, and while it seems to work well, I’m not 100% sure I’ve done it the “right” way. That said, I totally get that it's probably not worth the time to build out a separate version if most folks aren’t running into the same issues I am lol.

Do you remember which service it was? I haven’t had any crashes at all on the new route, but I’d like to test that specific one and see.

I have found the cause of it. Do you have that mod I mentioned? The crash on WCMLS is almost certainly down to a mod, probably the auto-announcer mod or something similar

This crash you’re experiencing isn’t related to DX12 or we’d all be having it.

Ah yep... I do have that mod installed, but interestingly, I was already getting these crashes before I added it. I don’t think it made the issue any better or worse in my case—it’s kind of felt the same frequency-wise before and after installing it.

It's also possible it could very well be another mod. My mod list is honestly pretty long at this point , but it’s all stuff from TSC, and I always make sure everything is kept up to date with the latest versions. :/

That mod is causing CTDs with the exceptional address access violation. Without that installed I haven’t had any crashes for months fwiw, obviously running DX12

It is almost certain that crashes of that type are down to mods I’m afraid.

    Hi all.

With all the chat about Frankfurt - Fulda I had a crack at it yesterday and enjoyed it so much, and it looked so good, that I decided to make a vid of it to demonstrate exactly what it looks like to me.

This is everything turned up to 11 and it is smooth as silk

Off-topic, JW, but do you have a way to get hold of Bescot?

I don't understand why DTG doesn't want to integrate these settings and files into the game, it's so easy to make it better and more stable

The likely reason could be summed in one word…

    Consoles.

They’re struggling enough with the game on its default settings, even Gen9 with blurry textures and memory crashes on certain routes. Whether that be due to consoles specs or DTG’s lack of optimisation is up in the air, but they would need to sort their game out before thinking about upgrading anything.

Frustratingly the lighting alone is entirely performance neutral so could work on consoles without issue

Hello, I would like to report that this mod causes a CTD on the Brighton mainline at East Croydon when the night lighting is on. I have 32 GB ram and 4090 laptop and i've tried removing all mods but the issue persists. To reproduce, you can load on foot at east croydon and look north.

That’s very highly unlikely I’m afraid. I’ll have a look when I’m next home and update the mod for the new Frankfurt route, but it’s almost certain that whatever is causing it isn’t this mod. There is nothing in this mod than can cause crashes really as it doesn’t mod the game per se, it just adjusts and adds values of pre-existing parameters.

I've just gone into timetable mode and spawned on foot at East Croydon at 23:00 turned around to face north and walked up to the end of the platforms with no issues or crashes and that's with all my mods installed. (32gb RAM i9 processor and RTX4070 laptop).
