They got to Preston on a booked Preston - Crewe but the only record i can find of one going north is one got to Carlisle on a relief in 1990.
As far as i remember they didn’t work north of Crewe on the WCML.
If i could pick i would go for a 25 if not that then a 81, 82, 83 or a 85 and if none of those then an 86 just as long as it’s not some rancid unit.

I would have said 25/3s would be the obvious sub class to add.
They were withdrawn by 1986 and given the route is set in the late 80s, so probably 87 to 89 which would rule out the apt. Having said that 40s...
