You can use the assets in any route in any other route - it is that way Freeware Routes are made
Check the LOD of the assets you are placing - clicking on the asset should give the LOD Box - give it an 8 or above.
When you time the trains you also give them a Category - Special, Express Passenger, Stopping Passenger - etc Make sure the train being overtaken...

You can only combine two routes that have a common location The Brighton Mainline goes nowhere near the Tonbridge to Hastings line.
