Yes I think this feature is a good improvement on the HUD, much quicker and easier to see if you are speeding or slowing.

The combined handle is a pretty weak brake but the indirect brakes are much stronger (L1/L2).

Think you might have to change your air brakes to lead and cut in then save. This might work.

Something I have noticed as well is the train noises carry on shortly after stopping at a platform, not every time but now and then.
You need to start off with the immersive controls set then when in the tutorials switch back to classic controls so you can access the screens.
I have just run this again and I had no problems with the scenario. Perhaps it was just a one off glitch when loading up?
