I recently bought the ‘Memories of Maredy’ dlc from the steam store and when I load the route in a standard, free roam and quick drive scenario, the brake control does not appear, the reverser is jammed in neutral and for standard scenarios the banners with instructions you would usually get do not appear. Is this a dlc glitch or is it my game in general? I have also tried the locomotives from the dlc in quick drive and the brake controls do appear but the reverser is still jammed...

Uninstall and redownload would be the first suggestion

Yeah that was the first thing I tried, I even did the same with the game including uninstalling and receiving all files left

Did you read the Manual to find out which Key you use to unlock the Reverser and which Key you use for other controls?

As they are steam locos I don’t think there is a key for that and also when I load in there aren’t any brake controls so on a gradient the loco will start coasting with no way to stop it

I don't have Memories of Maerdy but I do have Return to Maerdy which features the J94

To unlock the reverser you have to push a key - according to the Manual
Also, which you might not have realised, the wagons you have on the train do not have Brakes
No point in using the usual keys as there is no Train Brake to Operate and you have to use the Loco Steam Brake

I have not tried to operate the loco - I was just RTFM

    Hi
Yeah so unlocking the reverser doesn’t do anything and it stays jammed and as there is no lever on the HUD then I switched to the loco break and that’s jammed too...

So holding down the E Key did not allow you to move the reverser
Are you in Simple Mode or Expert Mode in the Settings > Gameplay?

For some reason an update changed my settings and caused problems

I just re downloaded the dlc and using the E key does unlock the reverser but only while one constant holding it but still no breaks, when you start a session the brakes automatically apply anyways...

Having the F4 HUD open tends to lock (force override) the controls of steam engines. No idea about Maerdy specifically.
Try switching to F3 or F5.

The J94 is tricky to operate:
As above the "E" key allows you to use the reverser using W/S (Do not use with a regulator setting of >15%)
The ";" releases the brakes but you have to press the the "J" key first as well - the brakes will stay on if you do not release the small ejector. After you move the brakes should be set to running using the "." key.
The link below is my very rough tabular guide on how to operate the J94 - it may help.
Use the F5 HUD if possible.
